Are they getting up a little slower? Hesitating before they jump in the car? There are new treatment options for dog osteoarthritis, plus therapy options and aids that can help them continue being their frisky self.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-5175\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(Cover Photo: Tammy Lynne has regular therapy sessions regarding why her mom splits treats in half and pretends it\u2019s a whole treat.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tammy Goes to the Vet \u2013 A Senior Dog<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s always had the lazy sit, with one leg out to the side, even as a puppy. But this was different. Then she stopped jumping into the car. She dragged her back nails on the pavement when she walked. When she slipped on my tile floors and struggled to get up, I finally took her to the vet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Diagnosis: Osteoarthritis (OA). <\/strong>\u201cDogs don\u2019t always show us they\u2019re in pain,\u201d said the doctor, not knowing it was like a knife to my heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d heard all about adding supplements like glucosamine to an older dog\u2019s food. Did I do it? No. And now I felt guilty as heck. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I walked out with a prescription bottle of carprofen (brand name Rimadyl, an anti-inflammatory and pain reducer) and treatment pamphlets for various drugs. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medical Treatments for Osteoarthritis in Dogs<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My vet gave me information on three possible treatment paths:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.elanco.com\/us\/galliprant\">Galliprant<\/a> \u2013 anti-inflammatory specifically for OA inflammation and pain, without the typical gastrointestinal issues of carprofen<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adequancanine.com\/\">Adequan<\/a> \u2013 series of injections that restores joint lubrication, relieves inflammation and protects cartilage<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoetispetcare.com\/products\/librela?\">Librela<\/a> \u2013 monthly injection that provides pain control through blocking nerves<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I talked it over with some vets and techs in the rescue community who had used Adequan on their senior dogs with great results. I scheduled the first 4-week injection series (2X weekly) and ordered the first month of Galliprant in July 2026. I can already tell the Adequan is working! Stay tuned for updates.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adequan: ~$550 per 4-week injection series for a 70lb dog; additional shot series to be scheduled when effects diminish<\/li>\n<li>Galliprant: ~$100 per month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/vetmedguide.com\/blog\/dog-arthritis-treatment\">veterinary treatment for OA<\/a>, talk to your veterinarian to find the right options for your dog.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Over the Counter Supplements for Osteoarthritis in Dogs<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glucosomine, Condroitin, Hyaluronic acid and Omega-3 fatty acids are the go-to supplements for dogs (and people) for stiff joints and cartilage protection. But the newest game in town is called <strong>UC-II Collegen. <\/strong>Typically made from chicken cartilage, it\u2019s been shown to improve mobility and lower inflammation in dogs with joint issues or arthritis. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More importantly, <strong>my vet recommended <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4y4nh7v\">Jope<\/a>, a supplement with UC-II and Omega-3<\/strong>. Tammy\u2019s allergic to brewer\u2019s yeast, a filler used in many supplements, so I have to research carefully. Both <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4qGfIkP\">Winpro Hip &amp; Joint<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4xe54V3\">Progility Hip &amp; Joint<\/a> are yeast-free.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Therapy Treatments for a Senior Dogs with Osteoarthritis<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumerapet.com\/blogs\/learn\/red-light-therapy-for-dogs-complete-guide\">Red light therapy<\/a><\/strong> increases blood flow and collagen formation plus reduces pain and inflammation. Look for a device that has settings from red (620-700nm) and near-infrared (700-1100) wavelengths. Settings of 620-660 are for surface level skin issues. <strong>Near-infrared at 850 nanometers<\/strong> is what\u2019s needed to get through the fur and reach muscle and bone. You can purchase these as hand-held treatment wands, full body mats or as wearables \u2014 lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/45M9Sor\">options on Amazon<\/a> \u2014 but make sure that it has a 850 nanometer setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Full-body electromagnetic therapy<\/strong> using a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4c0hIyq\">Petspemf Pad<\/a> was another recommendation from my vet, delivering therapy every time she slept. But honestly I couldn\u2019t bring myself to spend the $500 on a sleeping mat that my dog would likely ignore (see below with her new dog bed). You don\u2019t have to be an expert. If you\u2019ve ever had a massage, what felt good to you? Tammy just closes her eyes as I massage from the hip joint down to her knee and ankle, flexing the joints back and forth as I go. If you prefer a professional, I recommend Brad Winkler with <a href=\"https:\/\/houstondogmechanic.com\/\">Houston Dog Mechanic<\/a>. Genuine good guy plus Certified Canine Massage Therapist and member of International Association for Animal Massage and Bodywork. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Water therapy<\/strong> is another recommended treatment for keeping joints flexible and retaining muscle mass. And top in the field is <a href=\"https:\/\/k9hydrotherapyusa.com\/\">K9 Hydrotherapy<\/a> at K9 Health Center, 1025 Yale Street in the Houston Heights. Talk to them to see if this can help your dog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>TIP:<\/strong> Keep walking your dog. Maintain regular exercise with them, even if you have to shorten your route.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mobility Aids for Senior Dogs \u2013 Helping them Walk on Tile or Wood Floors<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have 100% tile, a slippery surface that her Tammy\u2019s hind end can\u2019t handle if she moves quickly. Here are <strong>options to help your senior dog walk on slippery tile and wood floors:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rugs<\/strong> \u2013 Yup, get throw rugs and runners and put them everywhere. Check out the sale bins at Home Depot, Home Goods, At Home and search <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4xx8IcR\">low cost rugs on Amazon<\/a>. Make sure to use <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4gezhgv\">double-sided tape<\/a> to keep them from sliding, or you\u2019re just creating another slip hazard for your pet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Shoes or Socks with Traction<\/strong> \u2013 Yeah, these are great if your dog will keep them on. Or if the socks don\u2019t twist around so the grippy part is on the top side of the paw. Tammy says no thanks. Adding toe grips helps reduce sliding. The mack-daddy original is Dr Buzby\u2019s Toe Grips. I asked friends on Facebook and got a 50\/50 result on whether they worked or not. I ordered them but then looked at Tammy\u2019s paws and sighed. Since she\u2019s already dragging her back paws on walks, the nails are down to nubbins, with no way to attach them. With Tammy\u2019s active lifestyle (doggie door all day plus sidewalk outings in AM\/PM), they only last 2 days. I apply them just to her back feet, which makes the package last longer.
