This may be the best news yet. Every one of us longs for greater calm, clearer thinking, deeper friendships, better sleep, stronger memories, and a happier outlook. Few of us would ever choose anxiety over peace, discouragement over hope, or isolation over belonging. Yet many of us have never learned that our own brains are wonderfully designed to help us move toward these gifts.

Serotonin is often called our brain’s natural well-being messenger. It helps steady our emotions, strengthens resilience, improves memory and learning, supports healthy sleep, encourages optimism, and even contributes to heart and digestive health. Much of our serotonin is produced in our gut, reminding us that caring for our bodies and our minds work beautifully together. Most exciting of all, serotonin is not reserved for lucky people.

It responds to the choices we make every day. That changes everything.

Fun facts about serotonin:

People possess naturally about 5 to 10 mg of the chemical.

Serotonin is 90% within your intestines.

The hormone’s additional 10% surges through the blood and brain.

Its neurotransmitter roles regulates:
Sleep
Memory
Appetite
Learning
Cardiovascular functions
Moods
Muscle contraction
Temperature regulation

Increase serotonin through foods such as milk, plums, pineapples, turkey, and bananas, as they add amino acid called tryptophan for manufacturing natural serotonin.

Neurons in the brain release serotonin, and the levels of release impact many behaviors.

Low serotonin levels can cause anxiety, fear, self-pity, insomnia, stress, and depression.

Certain drugs, such as Prozac, and even LSD will mimic serotonin in the brain.

As seniors, we possess a remarkable advantage that often goes unnoticed. During earlier seasons of life, careers, deadlines, raising families, and countless responsibilities demanded much of our attention. Today many of us have something incredibly valuable, greater freedom to choose.

Freedom to pause.

Freedom to notice.

Freedom to encourage.

Freedom to forgive.

Freedom to learn.

Freedom to laugh.

Freedom to become even wiser.

These freedoms are treasures that many younger people long for but have not yet discovered. Every day presents hundreds of opportunities to awaken serotonin. How so? When we sincerely thank someone, our brains benefit. When we express gratitude before breakfast, serotonin begins to rise. When we take a peaceful walk outdoors, sunlight and movement nourish both body and brain. When we prepare wholesome meals, especially those that support healthy digestion, we strengthen one of serotonin’s greatest sources. When we enjoy meaningful conversations, listen deeply, share stories, learn something new, or simply smile at a neighbor, our brains quietly reward these choices with greater well-being.

These are not little things. These are brain-building moments. Imagine two different mornings.

One begins with complaints about the weather, worries about the news, criticism of neighbors, and replaying yesterday’s frustrations. Before long, toxins the brain’s stress messengers, begin taking charge. Energy fades. Patience becomes shorter. Joy quietly slips away.

The second morning begins differently. We notice the sunrise. We enjoy a nourishing breakfast.

We express gratitude for one blessing. We phone a friend simply to encourage them.

We laugh together. We remain curious instead of critical. Throughout the day, serotonin helps us think more clearly, respond more gently, remember more easily, and experience greater peace.

The circumstances may be exactly the same. Our choices are not.

That is the wonderful difference. The science behind this discovery is both inspiring and hopeful. Modern neuroscience continues to show that our brains remain capable of growth throughout life. Every positive choice strengthens helpful neural pathways. Every repeated act of gratitude, kindness, curiosity, forgiveness, movement, learning, or meaningful connection makes those pathways easier to travel tomorrow.

In other words, every healthy choice becomes practice for our next healthy choice. Our brains become what we repeatedly encourage. This is why the Wisdom Café exists. Together we explore the astonishing discoveries of neuroscience and translate them into joyful daily living. We discover practical ways to transform ordinary moments into opportunities for flourishing. We encourage one another. We laugh together. We ask thoughtful questions. We learn from one another’s rich life experiences.

No lectures. No pressure. Simply good conversations that awaken greater wisdom. Imagine a room filled with open-minded seniors who believe that growing older also means growing kinder…more joyful…more resilient…more curious…more generous…and more hopeful. Imagine friendships that inspire healthier thinking. Imagine discovering practical habits that improve our mood, strengthen our relationships, sharpen our thinking, and help us become people who naturally lift others wherever we go.

This is not wishful thinking. It is neuroscience put into daily practice. Perhaps the greatest surprise is this: Serotonin is not simply about feeling good. It helps us become people who do good. When our minds become calmer, we listen better. When we become more grateful, others feel appreciated. When curiosity replaces criticism, conversations become richer. When kindness replaces crankiness, entire families benefit. When hope becomes contagious, communities become stronger. Our own well-being becomes a gift that quietly spreads to everyone around us. That is the extraordinary opportunity before us. Our later years are not a season of shrinking possibilities.

They are a season of expanding freedoms. Every day invites us to choose what strengthens rather than what weakens, what builds rather than what tears down, what connects rather than isolates, and what fills our brains with hope rather than fear. The Best News Yet is wonderfully simple. We have far more influence over our well-being than we once imagined. We cannot control every circumstance. But we can choose hundreds of responses every single day.

Those responses awaken serotonin. Those choices reshape our brains. Those brains shape our lives.

And together, those lives can become a source of wisdom, encouragement, and hope for generations to come.

A Mita Growth Mindset invitation for seniors to look forward to what comes next

What if, as we grow older, we stopped waiting for the Grim Reaper and started welcoming the Grace Reaper? Would that not add fun and excitement to our final years?

The Grim Reaper is an image of endings. It whispers decline, loss, limitation and gloom. Even the word grim can nudge our brains toward a fixed mindset: This is how things are now. This is what aging means. There isn’t much left to change.

But what if we changed the word, and changed the brain conversation that goes with it? Reaper means harvester, so that tag works well as it stands.

Enter the Grace Reaper.

The Grace Reaper doesn’t come to take away our possibilities. It comes to reap the grace, wisdom, relationships, discoveries, laughter and possibilities that our years have planted.

Instead of asking, “What are we losing as we age?” we can ask:

“What wisdom can we harvest now?” That is the heart of a Mita Growth Mindset: Maybe we can’t control everything that happens, but we can influence what we do with what happens.

GRIM can close and fix the brain. GRACE can open and grow it.

When our inner conversation becomes grim, our brains become more defensive. We may focus on threats, losses and limitations. We can become less willing to experiment, learn or try something new.

That is where our Wisdom Café brain tool SERO becomes especially interesting.

SERO = serotonin.

Rather than thinking of serotonin as simply a “feel-good chemical,” we can think of SERO as part of the brain’s larger system involved in mood, motivation, reward and social connection.

So our Wisdom Café challenge becomes:

What can we do to create more SERO moments?

A meaningful conversation.

A shared laugh.

Learning something we thought we were too old to learn.

Helping someone else.

Celebrating a small victory.

Moving our bodies.

Remembering that we still have something valuable to contribute.

These experiences don’t magically make aging disappear. They help us build a different relationship with aging.

From “What is left?” to “What can we create?”

A fixed mindset says:

“At our age, this is just the way it is.”

A growth mindset says:

“What might still be possible?”

That tiny change in language can become a powerful mental pivot.

We don’t have to pretend that aging brings no losses. It does. We may lose people we love. Our bodies may change. Some doors may close.

But a closed door does not mean the end of growth.

Sometimes it means we need to find another door.

And sometimes our greatest contribution comes precisely because we have lived long enough to see patterns, survive difficulties, make mistakes, recover, forgive, adapt and gather wisdom.

The Grace Reaper harvests what the Grim Reaper overlooks

The Grim Reaper sees an ending.

The Grace Reaper sees a harvest.

The Grim Reaper asks:

“How much time is left?”

The Grace Reaper asks:

“What can we do with the time we have?”

The Grim Reaper notices wrinkles.

The Grace Reaper notices stories.

The Grim Reaper notices limitations.

The Grace Reaper notices adaptations.

The Grim Reaper counts years.

The Grace Reaper counts wisdom shared, lives touched and possibilities created.

And perhaps most importantly, the Grim Reaper separates us from the future.

The Grace Reaper invites us into it.

Our senior years can become our SERO years

Imagine if we deliberately designed our later years around experiences that nourish connection, curiosity, contribution and joy.

Imagine walking into a Wisdom Café not as people waiting for life to slow down, but as people asking:

“What can our accumulated wisdom do next?”

That question changes everything.

We become less focused on being older and more focused on becoming older and wiser in action.

We don’t need to chase youth.

We can harvest wisdom.

We don’t need to deny mortality.

We can deepen meaning.

We don’t need to fear the future.

We can help shape it.

So let’s retire the Grim Reaper, at least in our thinking.

Let us replace grim with grace.

Let us replace fixed with growing.

Let us replace gloom with possibility.

Let us replace “It’s too late” with “What if?”

And when the future comes knocking, perhaps we won’t ask:

“Is the Grim Reaper coming?”

Instead, we will smile and say:

“I wonder what the Grace Reaper will harvest from us next.”

Because our later years need not be merely the years we have left.

They can be the years in which we harvest what all our earlier years have made possible.

That is not a grim ending.

That is grace in action.

And perhaps that is one of the most powerful Mita Growth Mindset questions we can carry into our senior years:

“What can we still grow, give, learn, laugh about, love, and harvest?”

In our Wisdom Café Session 2 of 12: Serotonin-Fueled Choices Open Untapped Freedoms for Seniors.

Together we will discover practical, joyful ways to activate the remarkable gifts already placed within us, strengthen our minds, enrich our relationships, and inspire one another to thrive.

The question is no longer whether these life-giving choices exist.
