2. Newness Is the Sales Engine. Discounting Trains the Customer<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Roughly half of what an independent store sells in any given month is brand new arrival. That means the best day to sell something is the day it lands. Stores that brought in fresh goods this summer saw sales turn on across categories, including fall product selling in August heat purely because it was new.<\/span><\/p>\n

The inverse holds too. An item that didn’t sell in May almost never sells at full price in August.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Worth noting: for our better clients, summer is already over. By mid August they’re fully focused on fall. That’s not a coincidence, it’s the same newness principle at work. The stores playing offense on inventory turns aren’t waiting for the calendar to tell them the season changed, they’re already moving.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, multiple consultants spent real time talking owners out of blanket storewide sales. Don’t train the customer to wait.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The better plays: small, frequent buys, roughly half the floor under 60 days old, fast small markdowns taken early, and deals placed as “Easter eggs” inside full price racks rather than a designated sale section.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
