\nfade, the seeds harden, and beneath the green leaves the roots begin gathering
\ntheir strength.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

There is
\nsomething melancholy about late summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The days
\nare still warm, but the light has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nevenings arrive sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldenrod
\nglows beside the road. Elderberries darken in the hedges. Seeds cling to dried
\nflower heads, waiting for autumn winds to carry them away.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the
\nmedieval herbalist, this was not simply the end of summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a
\ntime of gathering.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nfrantic abundance of spring had passed, and the wise woman began looking for
\nthe plants that would carry her household through the darker months.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of
\nthese herbs are familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others
\nhave almost disappeared from our modern medicine cabinets.<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nthose forgotten plants are the ones I find most fascinating.<\/span><\/p>\n

Agrimony <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> The Little Herb of the Hedgerow<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Agrimony
\n(Agrimonia eupatoria<\/i>) doesn’t demand attention.<\/p>\n

Its
\nyellow flowers rise on tall, slender spikes, often appearing along roadsides,
\nmeadows, and woodland edges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Medieval
\nherbalists valued it for a variety of complaints, particularly those involving
\nthe throat, digestion, and minor wounds. It was often prepared as a tea or
\ndecoction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its
\nbitter, astringent character made it especially interesting to traditional
\nherbalists.<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nthere is something wonderfully appropriate about agrimony.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a
\nquiet plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

It
\ndoesn’t announce itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have
\nto notice it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps
\nthat is why it feels like such a hedgewitch herb.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-Heal <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> The Herb That Needed No Introduction<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Self-heal
\n(Prunella vulgaris<\/i>) is another little plant easily overlooked.<\/p>\n

Its
\npurple flowers appear in lawns, meadows, and grassy places throughout summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its name
\ntells us everything about its reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Traditional
\nEuropean herbalists used self-heal for minor wounds, sore throats, and
\ninflammation. It was prepared as a wash, poultice, or tea.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nplant became associated with healing so strongly that its common names in
\nseveral European traditions reflected that reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is
\nsomething almost poetic about a plant called self-heal growing quietly beneath
\nour feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nreminder that the most useful things are not always the most impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldenrod <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> The Gold of August<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

By late
\nsummer, goldenrod (Solidago<\/i> species) begins lighting up the roadsides
\nwith brilliant yellow flowers.<\/p>\n

To
\nmodern gardeners, it may simply be a wildflower.<\/span><\/p>\n

To
\nherbal traditions, goldenrod had more to offer.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was
\ntraditionally used in preparations for urinary complaints and as an astringent
\nherb for minor wounds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its
\nflowers also attracted bees and other pollinators when many early-summer blooms
\nwere beginning to disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldenrod
\nis a beautiful example of how the old healer looked at a plant differently.<\/span><\/p>\n

She saw
\nmedicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nbeekeeper saw nectar.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nstoryteller saw the golden color of the fading sun.<\/span><\/p>\n

One
\nplant.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many
\nmeanings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elecampane <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> The Root Beneath the Flower<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

By late
\nsummer, some of the most interesting medicine was no longer above ground.<\/p>\n

It was
\nbeneath it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elecampane
\n(Inula helenium<\/i>) produces tall yellow flowers, but its thick aromatic
\nroot was the part traditional herbalists prized.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was
\nused historically for coughs, digestive complaints, and respiratory troubles
\nand was sometimes made into syrups or preparations with honey.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nroot’s pungent fragrance is unmistakable.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the
\nmedieval healer, it was exactly the kind of plant worth digging before winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nflowers might fade.<\/span><\/p>\n

The root
\nremained.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lady’s
\nMantle <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> Dew on the Leaves<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Lady’s
\nmantle (Alchemilla<\/i> species) has one of the most enchanting names in the
\nherbal world.<\/p>\n

Its
\nscalloped leaves catch drops of water in their folds, creating tiny pools of
\nsilver that shimmer in the morning light.<\/span><\/p>\n

Medieval
\nand early modern herbal traditions valued lady’s mantle particularly for its
\nastringent qualities. It was associated with women’s health and was used
\ntraditionally for various menstrual and reproductive complaints.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its
\nLatin name, Alchemilla<\/i>, hints at another layer of folklore.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alchemists
\nwere fascinated by the droplets that collected on its leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

To the
\neye, they seemed almost too perfect to be ordinary rain or dew.<\/span><\/p>\n

A little
\nsilver bowl held by a green leaf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alchemy
\ndoesn’t need much imagination after that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burdock <\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b> The Root That Waits Underground<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n

Late
\nsummer is also the season to begin thinking about roots.<\/p>\n

Burdock
\n(Arctium<\/i> species) is famous today for its enormous leaves and
\ntroublesome burrs, but traditional herbalists valued the root.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burdock
\nwas used historically as a “blood purifier” and for various skin
\ncomplaints and digestive troubles.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nmodern concept of a “blood purifier” doesn’t correspond neatly to
\nmodern medical science, but it tells us something about historical medicine:
\nhealers observed recurring patterns in illness and developed their own theories
\nto explain them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The root
\nwas earthy, bitter, and substantial.<\/span><\/p>\n

A winter
\nherb.<\/span><\/p>\n

A plant
\nfor the darker months.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nLate-Summer Basket<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Imagine
\nthe hedgewitch’s basket at the end of August.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not
\noverflowing with delicate spring flowers now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead,
\nit holds roots.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Berries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Golden
\nflowers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plants
\nchosen not only for what they can do today, but for what they might be needed
\nfor months from now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ngarden is becoming an apothecary for winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some
\nherbs are hung in bundles from the rafters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Others
\nare spread across linen to dry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Roots
\nare cleaned and stored.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeds
\nare collected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jars are
\nlabeled.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nothing
\nis wasted.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is
\nperhaps the part of historical herbalism I find most beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nhealer wasn’t simply gathering plants.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was
\npreparing for the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Magic of
\nthe Changing Season<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Late
\nsummer has always felt like a threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are
\nstill surrounded by abundance, but we can feel the change coming.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nfields are turning gold.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nfirst leaves are beginning to fall.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nnights are cooler.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nherbs are setting seed.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the
\nhedgewitch knows that soon the landscape will offer different medicines.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is
\nwhy I love writing about herbs in their seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n

A plant
\nisn’t simply a list of medicinal properties.<\/span><\/p>\n

It
\nbelongs to a particular moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nparticular landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

A
\nparticular kind of light.<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nperhaps a particular memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

From the
\nPages of The Midsummer Women<\/i><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The
\nwomen in The Midsummer Women<\/i> understand this kind of knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

They
\nknow that healing isn’t simply about knowing the name of a plant.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is
\nknowing when<\/b> to gather it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where it
\ngrows.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which
\npart to use.<\/span><\/p>\n

How to
\npreserve it.<\/span><\/p>\n

And when
\nto leave it alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

That
\nknowledge is passed from one generation to another\u2014not always through books,
\nbut through watching.<\/span><\/p>\n

Listening.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remembering.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is
\nthe knowledge of the hedgerow.<\/span><\/p>\n

And it
\nis disappearing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps
\nthat’s why I keep returning to these forgotten plants in my writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because
\nwhen we remember the plants, we sometimes remember the people who knew them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ncunning women.<\/span><\/p>\n

The wise
\nwomen.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\ngardeners.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nhealers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nwomen whose names history rarely recorded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until
\nNext Time<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

“Late
\nsummer is not the ending of the garden. It is the moment when the garden begins
\nhiding its medicine.”<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

So take
\na walk before the season turns.<\/span><\/p>\n

Look
\nclosely.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may
\nfind agrimony beneath the hedges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-heal
\nin the grass.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goldenrod
\nglowing beside the road.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elecampane
\nreaching toward the sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lady’s
\nmantle holding silver droplets in its leaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

And
\nbeneath your feet, the roots are already preparing for winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The old
\napothecary is still there.<\/span><\/p>\n

You only
\nhave to know where to look.<\/span><\/p>\n
