Texas-based Breedr<\/a> has raised a $27 million Series B round to expand its livestock management platform that creates a digital system of record for cattle. New funding will fuel company expansion across Australia, New Zealand, and the US.<\/p>\n

Technology investment firm Partech<\/a> led the round through its impact arm, with participation from return investors LocalGlobe<\/a> via its Latitude growth fund and Outsiders Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The new investment comes on the heels of record lows in cattle herd sizes in the US and Europe. The US in particular saw herd size drop to a 75-year low<\/a> in 2026. Higher production costs, drought, and multiple other external pressures exacerbate this and ultimately lead to higher pricing across the beef supply chain for producers and consumers alike.<\/p>\n

\u201cRanchers are being asked to produce more from a shrinking herd, and most of that herd is still managed on paper,\u201d explains Ian Wheal, a fourth-generation rancher from Australia who founded Breedr in 2018 in the UK. \u201cProducers can rear an animal for years with very little hard information about how it is performing and what they might get for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe industry has to get more value from every animal, and you cannot do that on paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breedr aims to fix that by giving every animal in the herd a digital system of record that tracks its weight, health, and breeding from brith to supermarket shelf, he adds. That lifelong record means \u201cproducers can see what they have, sell it for what it is worth and at the optimum moment using Breedr\u2019s predictive model.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Full circle beef\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Breedr\u2019s technology essentially replaces the analog methods of appraising cattle at auctions by site and keeping records on paper.<\/p>\n

Ranchers can input data on each animal into the Breeder app on their smartphone. Data can also be integrated automatically from wearable devices and other technology in use.<\/p>\n

Come auction time, each animal goes to market with a complete record of growth, performance, genetics, and how it was managed\u2014all factors that impact cattle quality and, ultimately, what goes to the consumer.<\/p>\n

Wheal stresses that Breedr\u2019s tools \u201cdon\u2019t just help make a rancher\u2019s paper records digital; Breedr is full circle beef. The data belongs to the farmer or rancher. The same digital record that follows an animal through its life also lets the producer trade it on our marketplace, so the whole chain from birth to sale is joined up in one place.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is a different thing altogether, and it is where the value Breedr brings actually sits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Breeder says it has more than 2 million cattle on its platform currently, and that roughly $500 million of cattle will trade on its marketplace this year. The company claims its revenue is up 230x since 2020,<\/p>\n

Economics and<\/em> impact<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The new funding will partly aid expansion in Australia and New Zealand, in addition to building out teams around the US.<\/p>\n

Partech, which has invested in a number of food, agriculture, and climate startups, suggests there\u2019s also an environmental benefit in better-managed beef.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeef is one of the most complex decarbonization problems there is.\u201d notes general partner Arnaud Minvielle, who says the Breedr platform cuts emissions while simultaneously improving rancher profitability.<\/p>\n

\u201cIan and the Breedr team are building the transaction layer for one of the world\u2019s largest unmodernized markets, earning revenue every time an animal changes hands. That alignment between the commercial engine and the environmental outcome is exactly what our impact fund exists to back.\u201d<\/p>\n
