The fuel cell combines hydrogen with oxygen from the air to produce electricity. This electricity drives the electric motor, while water and heat are produced as by-products.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike a battery-electric car, a hydrogen car does not need a large battery to store all its driving energy. Hydrogen can also potentially be refuelled much faster than a battery can be charged.<\/p>\n<h3>What is India doing?<\/h3>\n<p>India is still at an <strong>early\/pilot stage for hydrogen mobility<\/strong>, rather than having a mass-market hydrogen passenger-car ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>The Government&#8217;s <strong>National Green Hydrogen Mission<\/strong> aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production and use. The mission has an initial outlay of \u20b919,744 crore, including support for pilot projects and hydrogen infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2025, the government announced <strong>five hydrogen transport pilot projects involving 37 buses and trucks and nine hydrogen refuelling stations<\/strong>. These include both fuel-cell and hydrogen internal-combustion vehicles operating on different routes.<\/p>\n<p>Indian companies are also developing the technology. <strong>Tata Motors<\/strong> has supplied hydrogen fuel-cell buses to Indian Oil for evaluation, while Indian Oil has developed hydrogen production and refueling facilities as part of its hydrogen programme.<\/p>\n<h3>Why hydrogen is attractive for India<\/h3>\n<p>Hydrogen could be particularly useful for <strong>buses, trucks and long-distance transport<\/strong>, where long driving ranges and quick refuelling are important. India&#8217;s Green Hydrogen Mission specifically identifies long-haul mobility as an area where hydrogen could contribute to decarbonization<\/p>\n<p>Other potential advantages include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>Zero tailpipe carbon emissions from fuel-cell vehicles<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Fast refueling compared with conventional battery charging<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Potentially long driving range<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Reduced dependence on imported petroleum<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Opportunity to use India&#8217;s growing renewable-energy capacity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are the challenges?<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest challenge is <strong>infrastructure<\/strong>. Hydrogen refueling stations are currently very limited compared with petrol pumps and EV charging stations.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen production is another important issue. A hydrogen vehicle is not automatically a zero-carbon vehicle simply because it uses hydrogen. <strong>Green hydrogen<\/strong>, produced using renewable electricity, offers the strongest environmental benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen storage, transportation, fuel-cell cost, station investment and overall hydrogen price also need to become more economical before mass adoption.<\/p>\n<p>India has already established automotive safety standards, including <strong>AIS-157<\/strong>, covering safety and procedural requirements for compressed gaseous hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Hydrogen vs EVs<\/h3>\n<p>For private cars, battery EVs currently have a major advantage because India&#8217;s EV charging network is developing much faster and electric cars are already commercially available.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen may therefore find its strongest early applications in <strong>commercial vehicles, buses, heavy trucks and long-distance transportation<\/strong>, rather than immediately replacing battery-electric passenger cars.<\/p>\n<h3>The road ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Hydrogen cars are <strong>not yet a mainstream option for Indian consumers in 2026<\/strong>.
