Rubbing causes the hairs to tangle. Over time, the tangle turns into a mat\u2014a combination of loose and attached hairs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, preventing mats in the first place is ideal. (I\u2019ve also had success using the Chris Christensen brush for mats. I think it\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happygodoodle.com\/best-brush-for-goldendoodle-grooming\/\">best brush for Goldendoodle grooming<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-find-a-spot-in-your-home-or-even-outside-that-s-comfy-for-your-dog\"><strong>2. Find a spot in your home (or even outside) that\u2019s comfy for your dog.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In choosing your work surface, keep in mind that cornstarch is messy! You may want to choose a location that\u2019s easy to clean, or try placing a towel over your work surface. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our session, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happygodoodle.com\/dog-grooming-table-goldendoodle\/\">dog grooming table<\/a> was the obvious location. Chloe is used to hopping up on our grooming table for brushing and grooming. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, I groom my fluffy Muppet dog myself and even enjoyed learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.happygodoodle.com\/how-to-trim-a-goldendoodle-face\/\">how to trim a Goldendoodle\u2019s face<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before beginning, I gave Chloe a peanut butter-filled Kong toy as a distraction. It kept her occupied and happy as I worked on the mat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, it\u2019s always worth mentioning that some brands of peanut butter contain <a href=\"https:\/\/toegrips.com\/xylitol-and-dogs-why-your-dogs-counting-on-you-to-read-this\/\">xylitol<\/a>, an artificial sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs. Please check your peanut butter label.  <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-sprinkle-cornstarch-onto-your-dog-s-mat\"><strong>3. Hold the mat at the base (near the skin) with your fingers. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prevent your dog from feeling an accidental tug of the comb, don\u2019t start combing at the base of the mat. Instead, hold the mat in your fingers near your dog\u2019s skin. Then keep working toward the root. Give your dog lots of praise and sweet talk as you work. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I talk to my dog all the time, but my sweet talk really ramps up when I\u2019m working on a dog mat.
