Beating the summer heat is almost impossible in August, at least if you are in the South! We’ve got tips and tricks to help with the incredible heat, or at least tolerating it without going broke!

It’s been upwards of 105 degrees here, with a heat index of 115 degrees! Now, before ya go trippin, we have humidity and lots of it. So it’s not just the heat trying to take us out, it’s teamed up with humidity and they are doing a great job!

My poor plants are suffering outside as it’s way too hot for me to go water them and my koi pond keeps evaporating! Don’t worry, I go in and add water for them and even water the plants from time to time, but it’s rough here! Probably much worse as I have narcolepsy and MS, but I’d say it’s just as bad for everyone else.

Where I’m from, about mid August it becomes known as ‘Dog Days of Summer.’ This is when it gets so incredibly hot that the creeks dry up, the rivers run low (and are therefore full of bacteria) and it’s just too dang hot to do anything or go anywhere. Dog Days, my friends, are upon us here in NW Arkansas and NE Oklahoma. And it’s sweltering torture. All I wanna do is go to the river and it’s way too hot. Unfortunately, I cannot.

Tips & Tricks to Stay Cool

  1. Stay Hydrated! I know that we all know this one, but it’s always worth repeating. I know, personally, I carry a water bottle with me everywhere but lately I just can’t seem to drink enough water, so I’m always dehydrated. I highly recommend these adorable reusable glass water bottles from Faucet Face so that you always have a cold bottle of water without polluting the earth with plastic! Plus, they are super adorable!

  2. Cool Compresses! Placing a cool compress on the back of your neck, your wrists, lower back, abdomen and ankles can’t help you cool down very quickly if you get overheated.

  3. Cold Showers. Cold showers are also a great way to get cool quickly if you are overheated. Plus, an added bonus: it closes up your pores in your hair! So, it’s way better than hot showers anyway! I’ve taken to ending my showers in cold water as of late for that hair reason, it seems to help quite a bit.

  4. Run errands & shopping early and in bulk! If you have to, wait until the weekend to get groceries and stock up for a couple of weeks. That way you won’t have to get out again for a bit.

  5. Save Outside Chores: Do outside chores super early in the morning, before the heat sneaks in or late in the evening after it begins to cool off.

  6. Eat cold meals! Summer heat is the best time to avoid the kitchen, but if you get tired of salads (or just don’t like them like my grandsons), try making a cold soup, I highly recommend my Coconut Lime Chicken Soup! It’s absolutely fabulous served cold! As a matter of fact, it’s kind of better that way, but you can still eat it hot as well.

I’m sure there are a ton more tips I could give but I just got a call that my grandson has covid and my brain is spacing a bit.
