However, there\u2019s more to France than just Paris. Whether you\u2019ve been once or several times, you may be wondering where to travel in France after Paris. In this post, I share five regions I\u2019ve personally visited that make perfect next stops.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-21047\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to travel in France after Paris: 5 Great Regions to Explore<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve explored the highlights of Paris, it\u2019s time to see what else France has to offer. If you\u2019re wondering where to travel in France after Paris, these five regions give completely different experiences \u2014 from fairy-tale castles and prehistoric caves to stunning coastlines and historic villages.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. You can take a train (ie. to Blois or Tours); however, having car makes it much easier to explore the area and discover various ch\u00e2teaux. There are hundreds in this region and it\u2019s the architecture, gardens, and landscapes that are so impressive. An alternative to driving would be to do a bike tour. Easy to do as the area is flat!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some ch\u00e2teaux are state owned and managed and some are privately owned but are open to visitors. Some have been restored to their former grandeur (complete with period furnishings) and others are, shall we say, more rustic\u2014-yet still worth visiting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highlights Of The Loire Valley<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iconic ch\u00e2teaux such as Chenonceau, Chambord, Villandry (for its gardens), and Azay-Le-Rideau. The light, the colours, outdoor living, the markets and the hilltops towns. While I usually stay in the Vaucluse, some of my favourite day trips from Provence take me into the neighbouring Gard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Loire Valley has ch\u00e2teaux to visit and in Provence it\u2019s the picturesque villages (many are hilltop) that you should visit. such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/most-beautiful-hilltop-village-provence-gordes\/\">Gordes<\/a>, which I consider one of the most beautiful hilltop villages in Provence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Provence is dotted with villages worth visiting, many of them hilltop towns with lively weekly markets. (Don\u2019t miss L\u2019Isle sur la Sorgue\u2019s Sunday market).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highlights In Provence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discover the light and landscapes that inspired artists such as Van Gogh, particularly in Arles and Saint-R\u00e9my-de-Provence<\/li>\n<li>Art Exhibitions at Carri\u00e8res des Lumi\u00e8res, Fondation Maeght and Fondation Vasarely<\/li>\n<li>Numerous outdoor activities, including easy hiking, at Pont du Gard, La For\u00eat des C\u00e8dres, and Le Colorado Proven\u00e7al<\/li>\n<li>Lavender fields in season (June-August)<\/li>\n<li>Roman and medieval sites, from amphitheatres (Arles, Orange, and Nimes) to fortified hilltop villages (Chateau des Baux de Provence)<\/li>\n<li>Seasonal festivals celebrating wine, agriculture, and local traditions (ie. That\u2019s what comes to mine when I think of the Dordogne, a 5.5 hour drive southwest of Paris. This is an area of France where you can really slow down, spend a lot of time outdoors, and literally enjoy the scenery\u2026.which is what I did when I stayed in the area for 2 weeks (Check out my post, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/two-weeks-in-the-dordogne\/\">Two Weeks In The Dordogne: Sarlat and Beynac-et-Cazenac<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highlights In Dordogne<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Outdoor activities: biking (take the Voie Verte from Sarlat), kayaking on the Dordogne river, past beautiful villages and ch\u00e2teaux,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>or fly over the area in a hot air balloon.<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor markets-especially in Sarlat (foodies will love the gastronomy here: foie gras, walnuts, truffles, cheese, fresh local fruits and vegetables).<\/li>\n<li>Immerse yourself in the history of the region: visit ch\u00e2teaux (ie. Ch\u00e2teau de Beynac, Ch\u00e2teau de Castelnaud, Ch\u00e2teau des Milandes) and prehistoric caves (some are the real thing (Font-de-Gaume) and some are replicas (Lascaux IV) but all are fascinating).<\/li>\n<li>Nearby excursions (1 hour from Sarlat): explore the perched village (an pilgrimage site) of Rocamadour or visit a giant chasm\/cavity with an underground river at Gouffre de Padirac.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this slower, outdoor-focused style of travel appeals to you, I share much more detail about biking, kayaking, villages, and prehistoric sites in the post about my two-week stay in the Dordogne.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. It turned out to be the perfect excuse to explore the region, and in this itinerary I share the highlights of my 6-day visit. You don\u2019t have to run a race to enjoy Brittany. Its coastline, historic towns, and slower pace make it well worth the trip. The experience is quite different!<\/li>\n<li>Step back in time in these beautiful villages: Rochefort-en-Terre, Dinan, and Saint-Suliac<\/li>\n<li>Explore the coast:indulge in eating fresh some oysters (Cancale), visiting the walled city highlighted in the novel, \u201cAll The Light We Cannot See\u201d (Saint-Malo), being awestruck by the sculptures carved into the side of a cliff by a blind monk (Rochers Sculpt\u00e9s in Roth\u00e9neuf), and wandering around the medieval town located on the Gulf of Morbihan (Vannes)<\/li>\n<li>Walk along the ramparts of castles such as Ch\u00e2teau de Saint-Malo, Ch\u00e2teau de Foug\u00e8res, and Ch\u00e2teau de Josselin.<\/li>\n<li>Escape into the world of King Arthur at Broceliande Forest (Foret de Paimpont)<\/li>\n<li>See some history: the famous prehistoric standing stones (megaliths) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/france-stonehenge-carnac-alignments\/\">Carnac<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Why? It is quieter, less visited, and I can really practise my French because hardly anyone (I encountered) spoke English! Being so rural, you\u2019ll encounter a lot of cows (and cheese!) and pretty villages. The markets are excellent and highlight foods that are you\u2019ll fall in love with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can read about all my reasons why I keep returning here: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/aveyron-la-france-profonde\/\">My Return To Aveyron-La France Profonde: Why You Should Visit.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highlights In Aveyron<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>See villages that have been designated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/aveyrons-most-beautiful-villages-stay-guide\/\">MOST beautiful villages of France<\/a> (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France)-in Aveyron there are 11 of them<a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetraveltips.com\/aveyrons-most-beautiful-villages-stay-guide\/\">.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Villages with unique characteristics (ie. like the one clinging to the edge of a canyon -Bozouls)<\/li>\n<li>Indulge in unique foods to the area (ie. aligot and explore the Roquefort cheese caves. <\/li>\n<li>Get outdoors and enjoy nature and scenery like the Millau Viaduct, highest bridge in Europe<\/li>\n<li>Learn more about the history of the area not just in museums but also in attics! Think about how you like to travel: more active, more cultural, or slower-paced and rural.
