target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park<\/a><\/strong>, home to the remains and ruins of <strong>Manitoba\u2019s first year-round hydroelectric generating station<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We were really excited to come here because it\u2019s very rare that you get a chance to roam freely around this type of architecture that\u2019s been reclaimed by nature. This park is abounded with photography and hiking opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>As you walk through the dam, it\u2019s hard not to think about <strong>feeling like you\u2019re in a scene from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-ca\/the-last-of-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61334\">Last of Us<\/a><\/strong>. The first area you\u2019ll encounter is what\u2019s called the spillway which has mesmerizing geometric gates that reflect on the water above. The daily rate for the permit is $9.50. There\u2019s a large parking lot is available on-site with overflow on a grass field as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Allow 1\u20132 hours. This gives you enough time to explore the historic dam ruins, walk the scenic trails, and enjoy the river viewpoints. <\/li>\n<li>Wear sturdy footwear. The trails include uneven rock, gravel paths, and exposed granite around the dam ruins. <\/li>\n<li>Bring your camera. The dramatic concrete ruins, rushing Winnipeg River, and surrounding forest make this one of Manitoba\u2019s most photogenic parks. <\/li>\n<li>The trails aren\u2019t well-marked which leads to a lot of fun exploration. Paddle<\/a><\/strong> which would make the experience easier by offering tube rentals, shuttle service, and a convenient place to park.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the relaxing tubing experience is well-streamlined and so easy, especially for travelers that aren\u2019t from the area to enjoy the calm waters while the forest and granite shoreline glide by.<\/p>\n<p>On a hot summer day, this is easily <strong>the area\u2019s most popular summer activity<\/strong>, allowing you to cool down, slow down, and enjoy Manitoba\u2019s outdoors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group define wyntk This is a paid parking lot that\u2019s privately run by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honkmobile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61344\">Honk<\/a>. It\u2019s a flat rate of $10 for the day. The same pass is valid at all Pinawa paid parking areas for the rest of the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You definitely need to book your float in advance.  Summer weekends often sell out where they won\u2019t even allow walk-ups.  Don\u2019t risk it and reserve your preferred time before your trip.<\/li>\n<li>Arrive at least 15 minutes early. <\/li>\n<li>The process looks like this after parking.  You\u2019ll check in, provide your car keys (with numbered wristband), board the shuttle to the launch site, pick up your tube and paddle, walk to the channel where staff will be there to help you get onto the water.<\/li>\n<li>The shuttle bus comes by every 5-10 minutes and it takes 10 minutes to get from the parking lot to the launch site.<\/li>\n<li>The actual time on the water is 2.5 to 3 hours. For your car keys, you\u2019ll be giving it to the Float &amp; Paddle staff where they\u2019ll keep it in a numbered bin that\u2019s kept secure. Compact\">travel towels<\/a> with you as you can dry off when you get back to the car.<\/li>\n<li>When you arrive at the launch site, you can choose between different tube colours.  The default one has a hole in the middle which means that your body will get wet.  You can request a more tube which has a sealed middle which is recommended if you don\u2019t want to get wet.<\/li>\n<li>Paddles are optional and while instinctively you might not want one, it\u2019s a good idea to have one because it helps with maneuvering (a bit clumsy but it works) as there are times where you might drift into the bank and need to push off or if you get stuck on a rock. There are the metal-tubed and wooden paddles. The wooden ones are better because you can slot them through the tube\u2019s handles when you aren\u2019t using them.<\/li>\n<li>For couples and larger groups, they suggest that you start linked together.  Each tube has a black strap that has snap buckles.  This is what allows you to connect with the handle of another tube.  This is the recommendation because once you disconnect, it\u2019s hard to join back up (especially if you don\u2019t have a paddle).<\/li>\n<li>The Suspension Bridge is right at the tube exit.  This is your opportunity to walk the bridge if you\u2019re interested.<\/li>\n<li>No alcohol is permitted on the river.<\/li>\n<li>The channel is a very slow moving river with a very moderate amount of current and no white water so it is very easy.<\/li>\n<li>There are toilets at the parking lot and also at the launch area so make sure to use them before you head into the water.<\/li>\n<li>There is another company called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinawaunplugged.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61351\">Pinawa Unplugged<\/a> that operates on the channel, offering kayak tubes. The interior is cozily furnished with a comfy queen-sized bed, couch, and carpet. It\u2019s easy to make yourself at home because it almost doesn\u2019t feel like you\u2019re camping. Powered by solar, you also get the benefit of being able to charge your devices, sleep under the glow of the string lights, and cool down with a fan.<\/p>\n<p>On the deck is your cooking station with a propane grill, kettle stove, kitchenware, cleaning water, and a host of basic supplies to get you started. Next to the deck is your own private fire pit as well. The only missing is an en-suite bathroom, but there\u2019s a toilet nearby and the communal restroom with shower is easy to get to.<\/p>\n<p>Once you settle in, head up to the <strong>garden-inspired pavilion<\/strong>, the location of the <strong>clay pizza oven<\/strong>.  You\u2019ll need to start the oven yourself but once it\u2019s up to temperature, you\u2019ll be able to cook your frozen pizza.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images They have domes, canvas tents, cabins, bunkie, and campsites available to rent.<\/p>\n<p>Something to note is they embrace a DIY concept. This means that you won\u2019t meet any of the staff that works there. Instead, you\u2019ll be provided information ahead of time digitally and you\u2019ll be given the freedom enjoy as you please. Of course, if you do have questions, you can text them and they are quite responsive.<\/p>\n<p>For activities, they use an honour system where you fill out the release forms in their Welcome Centre shed and you can sort out the equipment you need yourself.<\/p>\n<p>While it is promoted as a beginner-friendly site, we do think you need to have moderate camping experience because it\u2019s hands-off.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Address:<\/strong>\u00a071057 Brookfield Rd, River Hills, MB R0E 1T0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Parking:<\/strong> There is a large parking lot at the front of the property.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Website:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/wildskiesresort.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61353\">Wild Skies Resort<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tent:\u00a0<\/strong>We stayed in the Luna tent which was incredibly spacious and beautifully furnished.  We particularly loved the string lights, comfortable bed, and the light.  Outside of the tent on the deck, you also have a fully equipped camping kitchen with utensils, cooking gear, and a fire pit.  The tent also has a really cool mechanism that covers the see through panels above if you don\u2019t want the sunrise to wake you up.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meals:<\/strong> You\u2019re provided a portable gas-powered grill and fire pit at your tent.  You can also use the wood-fired pizza oven.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Their property is adjacent to a calm river and is also backed by a forest.  It\u2019s also right off of Hwy 44 which makes it convenient to get to from Winnipeg.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tips:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By the parking lot are several carts.  Use these haul your luggage and supplies to your tent.  They can fit a lot of gear in them so they\u2019re super handy.<\/li>\n<li>Come to Wild Skies Resort with everything fully charged including a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/dp\/B0DGKWTQQC?tag=goinawesplac-20&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl&amp;linkCode=sl2&amp;linkId=c27c48d99765aa034cf3a7d69da20e0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61354\" data-lasso-lid=\"233118\" data-lasso-name=\"Anker Nano Power Bank, 45W Max Compact Battery Pack, Smart Display\">power bank<\/a>.  You can certainly charge in the tent but if you read the below, you\u2019re better to use it for something else.<\/li>\n<li>In the summer, it does get hot so you\u2019ll want to use the fan that\u2019s included which can be plugged into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/EF-ECOFLOW-Portable-Charging-Generator\/dp\/B0B97H2XHS?tag=goinawesplac-20&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl&amp;linkCode=sl2&amp;linkId=8455dbc2c3b41a89a60c044766fcf55e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61355\" data-lasso-lid=\"233122\" data-lasso-name=\"EF ECOFLOW Portable Power Station River 2 Max, 512Wh LiFeP04 Battery\/ 1 Hour Fast Charging, Up to 1000W Output Solar Generator (Solar Panel Optional) for Outdoor Camping\/RVs\/Home Use\">EcoFlow River 2 Max power station<\/a>.  Since this relies on the solar panels and the previous guests may have drained it, you might only get 40-50% capacity when you arrive.  We suggest you save this power for the fan so you can use it throughout the night.<\/li>\n<li>If you plan on using the pizza oven keep in mind that you\u2019ll need 3-4 hours to get the pizza oven up to temperature for cooking pizza from scratch.  If you\u2019re cooking a frozen pizza, you\u2019ll only need 1-2 hours since you don\u2019t need it as hot and it cooks very fast.<\/li>\n<li>Similarly for the sauna, it is cold unless someone else has started it before you.  You\u2019ll need to start the fire yourself and let it heat up.<\/li>\n<li>Just like other parts of Manitoba, there can be a lot of mosquitoes here in the summer so make sure to cover up or use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/dp\/B001GCU3VW?tag=goinawesplac-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61356\" data-lasso-lid=\"224459\" data-lasso-name=\"Ben's 30% DEET Mosquito, Tick and Insect Repellent, 37ml Pump, Pack of 4\">mosquito repellent<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Create a shopping list for your meals.  If staying one night like us, you\u2019ll need plan for dinner, s\u2019mores, and breakfast.  As non-residents, we found the best way to keep things simple was to make the frozen pizza and buy a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/dp\/B0CXJH43WR?tag=goinawesplac-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61357\" data-lasso-lid=\"233119\" data-lasso-name=\"HERSHEY'S Variety S'mores Kit, Gifts for Camping, Perfect for Firepit, Gifts for Family Event, Snacks for Kids, 651g\">s\u2019mores kit<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Most of the lawn games are already out in The Meadow area but if you\u2019re looking for board games and any other lawn games you don\u2019t see, your best bet is the Welcome Centre shed.<\/li>\n<li>You can pack your own <a href=\"https:\/\/goingawesomeplaces.com\/black-diamond-spot-400r\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-lasso-id=\"61358\">personal headlamp<\/a> but they do provide an LED lamp in your tent.<\/li>\n<li>A link to their full guide will made available to you a few days before you arrive.  We highly recommend to read this so you\u2019re best prepared.<\/li>\n<li>There are several small toilets scattered around the property but if you want to shower you\u2019ll be using the communal bathroom. It\u2019s really easy to fill up your tank before returning it.  This\u2019ll help you save more money.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, while you will need to drive on gravel roads, a 4\u00d74 or SUV isn\u2019t necessary to get around so feel free to choose any class of car that you like. On Monday, we were hoping to have lunch at the Spicy Radish Cafe.  We didn\u2019t check their hours ahead of time and of course they are closed Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Another surprise happened on Sunday.  While in Pinawa, we were hoping to pick up supplies at Solo Market but turns out that on Sunday they only open from 12-4PM.<\/p>\n<p>This is a broad reminder for you to check each businesses operating hours as you build out your itinerary.
