{"id":7047579,"date":"2026-08-25T17:14:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T17:14:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/agriculture\/we-let-our-horse-racing-industry-go\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T17:14:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T17:14:37","slug":"we-let-our-horse-racing-industry-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7047579","title":{"rendered":"We Let Our Horse Racing Industry Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-id=\"b3b9b5d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Racing seasons are business deals made\u00a0between the track and\u00a0the local\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jockeyclub.com\/default.asp?section=Resources&amp;area=17&amp;report=C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">racing commission<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0The commission looks at regional athlete availability,\u00a0animal welfare restrictions, and parimutuel betting expectations to negotiate the number of race days\u00a0allowed per year\u00a0and rental agreements for barn space.\u00a0Racetracks are businesses and so financial strain, like\u00a0reduced income in response to pandemic-related gathering restrictions, force tracks to make\u00a0difficult decisions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In\u00a02025, following years of poor attendance\u00a0and a lack of marketing, both\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/saskatoon\/article\/shame-on-you-prairieland-city-council-approves-demolition-of-marquis-downs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Marquis Downs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan)\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianthoroughbred.com\/horse-news\/marquis-downs-fraser-downs-headed-demolition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fraser Downs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Surrey, British Columbia)\u00a0were officially slated for\u00a0demolition. In two days,\u00a0harness racing track,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/standardbredcanada.ca\/news\/4-9-26\/fallout-rideau-carleton-raceway-closure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rideau Carleton Raceway<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Ottawa, Ontario), went from negotiating the 2026 racing season to\u00a0shuttering its doors in response to financial difficulty.\u00a0Workers in Vancouver, British Columbia, were similarly\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/horse-racing-ends-hastings-racecourse-casino-9.7005468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">blindsided\u00a0by the closure<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the 130-year-old\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/placesthatmatter.ca\/location\/hastings-park-race-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hastings Racecourse<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; much like with Marquis Downs, the\u00a0decision to end racing was partially informed by the attractiveness of soccer\u00a0and its\u00a0(potential and yet unrealized)\u00a0replacement in\u00a0those\u00a0spaces.\u00a0As of 2026,\u00a0there are\u00a0only\u00a0four\u00a0active\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jockeyscanada.com\/racetracks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">thoroughbred tracks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and 20 remaining\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/standardbredcanada.ca\/content\/links-racetracks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">standardbred tracks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, none of which remain in Saskatchewan.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From a\u00a0short term\u00a0business perspective, the closures unfortunately make sense. The problem is that it\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/standardbredcanada.ca\/news\/4-9-26\/fallout-rideau-carleton-raceway-closure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ripples\u00a0through the racing community<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0impacting\u00a0decisions that were made years prior.\u00a0Track closures in 2025 affected individuals in 2023, who raised their yearlings only to be told there was no market for them.\u00a0While\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/player\/play\/video\/9.7007541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">activist groups may praise<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the end to racing, it does\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/madbarn.com\/research\/sustainability-and-the-thoroughbred-breeding-and-racing-industries-an-enhanced-one-welfare-perspective\/?srsltid=AfmBOorKqOZ-XvBG4RB9PhuXrnw9eDeIW-4YyufogwqK_r4VFwBjXaq_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">very little to address the legitimate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0welfare concerns with the sport\u00a0and may\u00a0actually limit\u00a0quality of care depending on whether the cut off services can be substituted elsewhere\u00a0(i.e. across interprovincial borders).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Equine services are\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/equestrian.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/The-Canadian-Equine-Sector_Socio-Economic-Insights-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">not independent from agricultural challenges<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> faced in other sectors (i.e. education constraints, labour loss, land availability, feed prices, etc.), which makes short term or year-to-year negotiations confusingly na\u00efve. The breeding cycles of performance horses necessitate long-term planning with direct and indirect stakeholders. Especially as Canada struggles to realise where it can invest in its agricultural industries, the cascading annual loss of revenue generation in the hundreds of millions limits who and what we can attract.
