For photographer\u00a0<\/span>Shawn Walker<\/span><\/a>, life is not black and white but a\u00a0symphony of textures and tones, layered like the rhythms, harmonies, and melodies of his hometown. Born in Harlem in 1940<\/span>, Walker got his start accompanying his uncle, Herbert Hoover, a\u00a0bar photographer who became one of the first in the neighbourhood to get a\u00a0Polaroid. By the late \u200b\u2019<\/span>50<\/span>s,\u00a0he was hanging out in storied jazz clubs like Minton\u2019s Playhouse and Birdland, while practicing his own instrument: the camera.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Watching his uncle\u2019s thriving side hustle, Walker intuitively understood he could make photographs without having to rely on it as his livelihood. He joined a\u00a0local photography group that merged with another in 1963<\/span> to become\u00a0<\/span>Kamoinge<\/span><\/a>, today the oldest nonprofit photography collective in the world. Walker, the youngest founding member, was joined by luminaries including Roy DeCarava,\u00a0<\/span>Adger Cowans<\/span><\/a>, Anthony Barboza, and later\u00a0<\/span>Ming Smith<\/span><\/a> and\u00a0<\/span>Frank Stewart<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was here, in Kamoinge members\u2019 homes during their spirited Sunday sessions, that Walker learned photography was not just a\u00a0trade, it was an art. There were no rules, other than he could write his own, and so he did, devoting a\u00a0lifetime to elevating photography to the realm of fine art\u200b.In 2019<\/span>, Walker became the first Black photographer to have his archive acquired by the\u00a0<\/span>Library of Congress<\/span><\/a>, his collection of over 100<\/span>,000<\/span> images housed alongside luminaries including Toni Morrison,\u00a0<\/span>James Baldwin<\/span><\/a>, and Maya Angelou \u2013 all of whom he has photographed during his storied seven-decade career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
