In fact we have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/realbread\/bread_list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 200 different types of bread in Britain,\u00a0<\/a>with numerous regional varieties of bread products provide us with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/food\/516026\/British-regional-names-for-rolls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a culinary map of our nation<\/a>, some famous and well know, and some not known out of their own villages, or towns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img bread\u00a0<\/a>bun, what is essential is that the bread is buttered (or margarined) and a slab or hefty chunks of mature\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Cheddar+Cheese\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheddar cheese\u00a0<\/a>placed inside with large (raw) rings of onion\u2026.that\u2019s it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember our local pub\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoachrillington.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cThe Coach &amp; Horses\u201d in Rillington<\/a>\u00a0selling these, which were always popular the butties<\/a>\u00a0were brilliant for soaking up the ale, but they weren\u2019t particularly user friendly, as you were left with strong onion breath!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve seen these in pubs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Yorkshire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all over Yorkshire,<\/a> but apparently they are very popular in the Midlands,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bclm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and the Black Country\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and the href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smiths_(snack_foods)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a packet of crisps<\/a>.\u00a0I used crusty cobs, with farmhouse cheddar and a raw class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Crusty rolls are best, but regional variations such as barm cakes, baps, bread cakes, batch rolls and oven bottom muffins are also good.<\/li>\n<li>Red onion is not usually used, it has to be a good old-fashioned yellow (Spanish) onion.<\/li>\n<li>Mature or a strong flavoured cheese is best, so the onion isn\u2019t too overwhelming.<\/li>\n<li>Margarine or a plant based spread works too.<\/li>\n<li>Keeps in an airtight container in the fridge overnight for picnics etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/category\/recipes\/snacks\/sandwiches\" target=\"_blank\">sandwiches<\/a> is popular again, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.great-british-pubs.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">pub style<\/a> cheese &amp; onion crusty cob (bread rolls) is having a revival. <\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s a cob? Also known as a barm cake, bread cake, batch, oven bottom muffin, bap, bread roll or a bun, they are regional variations on a bread roll.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=British+Bread\" target=\"_blank\">Ours is a nation <\/a>with a rich and diverse bread making history, with the most marvellous, quirky names; bloomers, cobs, cottage loaves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=baps\" target=\"_blank\">baps<\/a>, barm cakes, bannocks, Kentish huffkins, Sally Lunns,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Stottie+Stotty\" target=\"_blank\"> stottie cakes<\/a>, farmhouse, buttery rowies, Granary etc.<\/p>\n<p>And so the list goes on. In fact we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainweb.org\/realbread\/bread_list\/\" target=\"_blank\">over 200 different types of bread in Britain, <\/a>with numerous regional varieties of bread products provide us with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/life-style\/food\/516026\/British-regional-names-for-rolls\" target=\"_blank\">a culinary map of our nation<\/a>, some famous and well know, and some not known out of their own villages, or towns.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Bread\" target=\"_blank\">you call the bread <\/a>bun, what is essential is that the bread is buttered (or margarined) and a slab or hefty chunks of mature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Cheddar+Cheese\" target=\"_blank\">cheddar cheese <\/a>placed inside with large (raw) rings of onion\u2026.that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>I remember our local pub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecoachrillington.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Coach &amp; Horses\u201d in Rillington<\/a> selling these, which were always popular the visiting darts team. <\/p>\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/?s=Butty\" target=\"_blank\">huge butties<\/a> were brilliant for soaking up the ale, but they weren\u2019t particularly user friendly, as you were left with strong onion breath! <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve seen these in pubs all over Yorkshire, but apparently they are very popular in the Midlands, <a href=\"https:\/\/bclm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">and the Black Country <\/a>&#8211; Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>For the true pub experience, serve these rustic cheese &amp; onion butties with a pint, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavenderandlovage.com\/2020\/11\/traditional-homemade-pickled-onions.html\" target=\"_blank\">pickled onions, <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smiths_(snack_foods)\" target=\"_blank\">a packet of crisps<\/a>.\u00a0I used crusty cobs, with farmhouse cheddar and a raw onion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I hope you muffins are also good.<\/p>\n<p>Red onion is not usually used, it has to be a good old-fashioned yellow (Spanish) onion.<\/p>\n<p>Mature or a strong flavoured cheese is best, so the onion isn&#8217;t too overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>Margarine or a plant based spread works too.<\/p>\n<p>Keeps in an airtight container in the fridge overnight for picnics etc.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div
