Athens State University is expanding its digital credentialing initiative, providing students with innovative tools to document and communicate the knowledge, skills, and experiences they gain throughout their academic journey.
The University’s digital credentialing program allows students to earn verified digital credentials that recognize competencies achieved through coursework, academic milestones, and experiential learning opportunities. The credentials complement a traditional college transcript by providing detailed, verifiable evidence of the specific skills students have developed and can share with employers, graduate schools, and professional organizations.

Integrated with Athens State’s learning management system, the program enables eligible credentials to be awarded automatically as students complete designated assignments and academic requirements. As students progress toward graduation, they build a digital portfolio of verified accomplishments that showcases both academic achievement and career-ready competencies.

“At Athens State, we are committed to preparing students not only to earn a degree, but also to demonstrate the valuable skills they develop throughout their educational experience,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, President of Athens State University. “Digital credentials provide our graduates with an additional way to communicate their strengths and distinguish themselves in an increasingly competitive workforce.”

Beyond the classroom, the program also recognizes experiential learning, including internships, undergraduate research, leadership activities, community engagement, and other high-impact educational experiences. Students may earn stacked credentials that document continued growth and mastery across multiple learning opportunities, creating a more comprehensive record of their achievements.

The expanded initiative reflects Athens State’s ongoing commitment to innovation in teaching and learning while strengthening connections between academic achievement and workforce preparation. By providing students with verified, portable credentials that highlight in-demand skills and competencies, the University is helping graduates better articulate their qualifications and demonstrate their readiness for career advancement.

Athens State continues to explore new opportunities to integrate digital credentialing across academic programs, ensuring students graduate with both a respected degree and a robust portfolio of verified achievements that support lifelong learning and professional success.
