But meeting that challenge requires health care innovators to look<br \/>\nto other innovators who themselves have created unique cybersecurity solutions.<br \/>\nAmong these \u201cThink outside the box\u201d solutions are products and services from<br \/>\nvendors like TripleBlind, Verily, Beekeeper.AI\/Microsoft, Terra, and Nvidia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"background: white;\">The concept of secure<br \/>\ncomputing enclaves has been around for many years. Apple created its secure<br \/>\nenclave,\u00a0a subsystem built into its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/security\/secure-enclave-sec59b0b31ff\/web\"><span style=\"background: white; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;\">systems<br \/>\non a chip (SoC),<\/span><\/a><span style=\"background: white;\"> which in turn is \u201can<br \/>\nintegrated circuit that incorporates multiple components into a single chip,\u201d<br \/>\nincluding an application processor, secure enclave, and other coprocessors.<br \/>\nApple explains that \u201cThe Secure Enclave is isolated from the main processor to<br \/>\nprovide an extra layer of security and is designed to keep sensitive user data<br \/>\nsecure even when the Application Processor kernel becomes compromised. It<br \/>\nfollows the same design principles as the SoC does\u2014a boot ROM to establish a<br \/>\nhardware root of trust, an AES [advanced encryption standard] engine for<br \/>\nefficient and secure cryptographic operations, and protected memory. Although<br \/>\nthe Secure Enclave doesn\u2019t include storage, it has a mechanism to store<br \/>\ninformation securely on attached storage separate from the NAND flash storage<br \/>\nthat\u2019s used by the Application Processor and operating system.\u201d The secure<br \/>\nenclave is embedded into the latest versions of its iPhone, iPad, Mac<br \/>\ncomputers, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Home Pod.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">While this security<br \/>\nmeasure provides users when an extra layer of protection, because it\u2019s a<br \/>\nhardware-based solution, its uses are limited. With that in mind, several<br \/>\nvendors have created software-based enclaves that are more readily adapted by<br \/>\ncustomers. At Mayo Clinic Platform, we are deploying TripleBlind\u2019s services to<br \/>\nfacilitate sharing data with our many external partners. It allows Mayo Clinic<br \/>\nto test its algorithms using another organization\u2019s data without either party<br \/>\nlosing control of its assets. Similarly, we can test an algorithm from one of our<br \/>\nacademic or commercial partners with Mayo Clinic data, or test an outside<br \/>\norganization\u2019s data with another outside organization\u2019s data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">How is this \u201cmagic\u201d<br \/>\nperformed?<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: white;\">Of course, it\u2019s always about<br \/>\nthe math. TripleBlind allows the use of distributed data that is accessed but<br \/>\nnever moved or revealed; it always remains one-way encrypted with no decryption<br \/>\npossible. TripleBlind\u2019s novel cryptographic<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: white;\">approaches can operate on any type of data<br \/>\n(structured or unstructured images, text, voice, video), and perform any<br \/>\noperation, including training of and inferring from AI and ML algorithms. An<br \/>\norganization\u2019s data remains fully encrypted throughout the transaction, which<br \/>\nmeans that a third party never sees the raw data because it is stored behind<br \/>\nthe data owner organization\u2019s firewall. In fact, there is no decryption key<br \/>\navailable, ever.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: white;\">When two health care<br \/>\norganizations partner to share data, for instance, TripleBlind software de-identifies<br \/>\ntheir data via one-way encryption; then, both partners access each other\u2019s<br \/>\none-way encrypted data through an Application Programming Interface (API). That<br \/>\nmeans each partner can use the other\u2019s data for training an algorithm, for<br \/>\nexample, which in turn allows them to generate a more generalizable, less<br \/>\nbiased algorithm. During a recent conversation with Riddhiman Das, CEO for<br \/>\nTripleBlind, he explained: \u201cTo build robust algorithms, you want to be able to<br \/>\naccess diverse training data so that your model is accurate and can generalize<br \/>\nto many types of data. Historically, health care organizations have had to send<br \/>\ntheir data to one another to accomplish this goal, which creates unacceptable<br \/>\nrisks. TripleBlind performs one-way encryption from both interacting<br \/>\norganizations, and because there is no decryption possible, you cannot<br \/>\nreconstruct the data. In addition, the data can only be used by an algorithm<br \/>\nfor the specific purpose spelled out in the business agreement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"background-color: white;\">Developing<br \/>\ninnovative technological services is exciting work, with the potential to<br \/>\nreshape the health care ecosystem worldwide. But along with the excitement is<br \/>\nthe challenge of keeping data safe and secure.
