It is the way the same pack can carry hiking layers, a laptop, or protected camera gear without looking like a specialized trekking or camera bag.

That versatility is also why the price needs context. The backpack lists for $249.95 before a camera cube, hip belt, or rain fly. It can be worth the premium for a traveler-photographer who will use the rear-panel access and modular carry system. A pure day hiker or commuter can spend considerably less.

Disclosure: I personally tested and photographed this backpack. My rating is 4.5 out of 5.

Best for

Travelers and photographers who want one bag for city, trail, laptop, and camera use

Main strengths

Rear-panel access, expandable capacity, exterior carry, weather resistance, and modular camera storage

Main drawbacks

High price, no included hip belt or rain fly, frameless load support, and a busy strap system

Skip it if

You need a framed hiking pack, a guaranteed airline personal item, or a simple budget daypack

Rating

4.5/5

How I Tested the Outdoor Backpack 25L

I evaluated the backpack as a mixed-use daypack rather than treating it only as hiking gear or only as a camera bag. My real-world use included:

Hiking: snowy trails in Triglav National Park and exposed coastal terrain in the Netherlands

Travel and city use: walking, public transportation, laptop carry, and working away from home

Photography: carrying camera equipment, a tripod, spare layers, and smaller accessories

Weather: wind plus light and moderate rain, including sudden bad weather in Amsterdam

I focused on comfort, access speed, organization, weather protection, exterior carry, and how naturally the bag moved between outdoor and urban settings. I did not conduct a laboratory waterproofing or abrasion test.

Peak Design Outdoor Backpack 25L Specs and Current Price

The current U.S. list price is $249.95, although promotions and color-specific discounts can change. The specifications below are for the 25L model and were last checked on August 4, 2026 against Peak Design’s current product information.

Feature

Specification

Capacity

20L with the roll-top down; 25L fully extended

Weight

2.54 lb (1.15 kg)

External dimensions

19.09 × 11.02 × 5.91 in with the roll-top down; 25.98 × 11.02 × 5.91 in extended

Construction

Frameless daypack with Terra Shell 210D ripstop nylon, weather-resistant zippers, and a PFAS-free water-repellent treatment

Laptop carry

Internal sleeve fits up to a 16-inch MacBook Pro

Hydration compatibility

Supports a reservoir up to 3L; the internal sleeve is shared with laptop carry

Camera Cube compatibility

One Smedium Camera Cube, with room for an X-Small cube above it; not designed for Peak Design’s Small, Medium, or Large cubes

Included straps

Two sternum straps, two exterior carry cords, two gear loops, and a key tether

Hip belt

Not included; compatible padded belt sold separately

Rain cover

Not included; compatible 25–30L rain fly sold separately

Colors

Black, Cloud, Eclipse, and Kelp; availability varies

Warranty

Peak Design lifetime warranty for covered functional failures and manufacturing defects; exclusions apply

The corrected weight matters. At 2.54 pounds, this is reasonably light for a modular camera-capable pack, but it is not a minimalist ultralight hiking bag. Its value comes from access and adaptability rather than the lowest possible base weight.

Design and Access: What Makes This Pack Different

Ultra Cinch Roll-Top and 20–25L Capacity

Peak Design’s Ultra Cinch system combines a magnetic roll-top with a central cord that secures the top and front stash area. The design gives you a compact 20L shape for lighter days and another 5L when you need room for a jacket, food, or photography gear.

The tradeoff is usability. A conventional zipper is easier to understand immediately. During my first outings, closing the roll-top neatly and cinching it with one smooth motion took some trial and error. It became faster with practice, but this is not the bag’s most intuitive feature.

Full Rear-Panel Access

The rear zipper is the feature I used most. It opens the main compartment away from the dirt-facing front of the bag and lets you reach items at the bottom without pulling everything through the roll-top. That is useful when weather changes quickly, but it matters even more with a camera cube.

Rear-panel and roll-top access make the same compartment easier to use with layers, tech, or a camera cube (Kyle Kroeger / ViaTravelers)

Pockets and External Carry

The expandable side pockets held a water bottle, trekking poles, and a tripod securely during my testing. The front stash area works well for a damp shell or light layer, while the included cords can secure bulkier items outside the main compartment.

This flexibility is useful when you actually carry outdoor or photography equipment. It can feel excessive when you do not. Cord rails, removable straps, two sternum straps, and multiple attachment points create more setup choices—and more loose parts—than a basic 25L pack.

Comfort, Fit, and Load Support

The shoulder straps spread pressure better than their low-profile shape suggests, and the ventilated back panel stayed comfortable on long walks and moderate day hikes. Two movable sternum straps help stabilize the bag while hiking or cycling, although most users will not need both at the same time.

The limit is the frameless structure. It carries normal day-hike, travel, and compact camera loads well, but it does not transfer dense weight to the hips like a technical hiking pack with a frame and load-bearing belt.

The 25L does not include a hip belt. Peak Design sells a compatible padded Outdoor Hip Belt separately for $49.95. I would consider it for a heavier camera setup or longer hike, but it is unnecessary for many light travel and commuting loads.

Weather Resistance: Good, but Not Fully Waterproof

The Terra Shell ripstop, coated high-wear panels, weather-resistant zippers, and roll-top handled light and moderate rain well in my use. My laptop and camera equipment stayed dry during sudden wet weather in Amsterdam.

That result should not be read as a waterproof guarantee. The backpack is built to resist weather, not submersion or unlimited exposure to heavy rain. For prolonged downpours, Peak Design’s separate 25–30L Outdoor Rain Fly adds taped seams and a waterproof 2,000 mm coating.

Using the 25L as a Photography Backpack

The Outdoor line is designed around Peak Design’s camera cubes, packing tools, and attachment system (Kyle Kroeger / ViaTravelers)

The 25L becomes a genuine camera backpack when paired with a Peak Design Smedium Camera Cube. The cube anchors inside the main compartment, and the rear panel gives you broad access to the protected kit. Peak Design also allows an X-Small cube to sit above the Smedium unit.

Camera access: the rear panel exposes the main compartment without unpacking from the top

Tripod carry: a deep side pocket and exterior cord can stabilize a compact tripod

Mixed packing: the expandable top leaves space for layers or food above a camera insert

Weather protection: the shell adds useful protection for electronics in changeable conditions

There is one important compromise: a Smedium cube occupies much of the lower compartment. It creates good protection, but leaves less room for clothing and adds another closure between you and a lens. Fast-moving street photographers may prefer a sling or a more camera-first pack; landscape and travel photographers are more likely to appreciate the protection and exterior carry.

For compatible accessories, see our guide to the best Peak Design products for travel and photography. For designs built primarily around camera access, compare the best camera bags for travel.

Travel, Commuting, and Airline Use

This is where the Outdoor Backpack separates itself from a conventional hiking pack. The clean profile does not look overly technical on trains or in cafés, the internal sleeve accommodates a large laptop, and the frameless body can pack flatter than a rigid camera backpack when empty.

I would not market it as a guaranteed airline personal item. With the roll-top down, the bag is about 19.1 inches tall; fully extended, it reaches nearly 26 inches. It may fit under some seats when lightly packed, but airline limits and under-seat space vary. Check the dimensions against the operating carrier before relying on it as your personal item.

As a travel daypack, however, it works well. The 20L mode stays compact for city use, while the extra 5L is useful when a jacket or groceries need to come back with you.

Day Hiking Performance

For day hikes, 20–25L is enough for water, food, layers, a compact first-aid kit, and a small camera setup. The pack felt stable on snowy and windy terrain, and the exterior pockets made it easy to separate a bottle, poles, and tripod from the main compartment.

It is less convincing for gear-heavy backcountry days. There is no internal frame, the belt costs extra, and the organization is built around versatility rather than load transfer. Hikers who regularly carry dense loads should prioritize an adjustable harness and integrated hip belt over camera modularity.

The True Cost of a Complete Setup

The $249.95 base price does not include the accessories that turn the pack into its most capable hiking-camera configuration. At current U.S. list prices, the cost can look like this:

Component

Current list price

Who needs it

Outdoor Backpack 25L

$249.95

Every buyer

Smedium Camera Cube V2

$69.95

Photographers who need structured protection

Outdoor Hip Belt

$49.95

Users carrying denser loads or hiking longer distances

Outdoor Rain Fly

$29.95

Users expecting sustained or heavy rain

Fully configured total

$399.80 before tax

Not every buyer needs all three accessories

Prices checked August 4, 2026. Promotions, bundles, colors, and regional prices can change.

This cost stack is the strongest argument against the bag. It is also why the buying decision should depend on how many jobs the pack will replace. The value is easier to justify when it substitutes for a commuter bag, hiking daypack, and camera backpack—not when it serves only one of those roles.

Peak Design’s lifetime warranty adds long-term value by covering eligible manufacturing defects and functional failures. It does not cover cosmetic wear, misuse, loss, or every form of damage.

Peak Design Outdoor Backpack 25L vs. the Best Alternatives

The closest alternative depends on the job you care about most. A hiking-first buyer gets better load support from Osprey, while a commuter or casual traveler can save roughly $95–$100 with Patagonia or The North Face. Peak Design earns its price through crossover utility, not because it beats every specialist pack at its own job.

Buy it when you will use the rear access, exterior carry, expandable roll-top, and camera ecosystem.
