International travellers departing India will no longer need to carry a physical boarding pass to immigration or have it stamped by an immigration officer from September 1, 2026. The Bureau of Immigration is doing away with the requirement across all international airports in the country, in another step towards a more digital departure process.\n<\/p>\n
If you have travelled internationally from India often enough, you probably know the drill. You check in, get your boarding pass, go through security and then, at immigration, hand over your passport and boarding pass to an immigration officer. The officer clears you for departure and, until now, stamps the boarding pass before you proceed towards the gates.<\/p>\n
That last part is about to disappear.<\/p>\n
According to an internal communication from the Bureau of Immigration, reviewed by The Hindustan Times<\/a>, the requirement for passengers to present a physical boarding pass for stamping at immigration counters will be discontinued from September 1. The communication has been sent to airport operators, CISF and other aviation stakeholders.<\/p>\n The biggest practical change for passengers is that you will be able to present an electronic boarding pass at immigration. So, if you have checked in online and your airline has issued a boarding pass on your smartphone, you can simply display it at the immigration counter along with your passport. However, what beats me is whether airlines will issue e-Boarding Passes before document check, which is the current process for departing from India.<\/p>\n There will be no requirement for the immigration officer to stamp the boarding pass.<\/p>\n The Bureau of Immigration says the decision follows an examination of the existing process. It noted that requiring passengers to produce physical boarding passes created inconvenience and that boarding passes had also become difficult to read due to improper or incorrect stamping.<\/p>\n \t<\/p>\n For passengers who have become accustomed to carrying a paper boarding pass specifically because of the immigration stamp, this means one less piece of airport paperwork to worry about.<\/p>\n There is an important distinction in the new rule. India is not invalidating physical boarding passes. If you prefer to check in at the airport and receive a printed boarding pass, you can continue to use it at immigration. The difference is that the immigration officer will no longer stamp it.<\/p>\n That should provide some comfort to travellers who do not want to depend entirely on their phones while travelling. A printed boarding pass can still be useful as a backup, particularly when a phone has a dead battery, poor connectivity or a damaged screen. The new policy is therefore about removing the mandatory stamping process, rather than forcing every international passenger to go completely paperless.<\/p>\n It is also worth clarifying exactly which boarding-pass stamp is being eliminated. Indian airports have had several different document-checking and stamping processes over the years, which can make the terminology confusing. The latest decision relates specifically to the immigration counter.<\/p>\n It does not represent a change to airline boarding procedures, nor does it mean that CISF has suddenly stopped checking passengers. Security screening and the checks required to enter the airside area will continue as before.<\/p>\n What is changing is the immigration requirement to physically present a boarding pass to an immigration officer for stamping.
