Zuchu began singing at a young age, coming from a prominent musical family in Zanzibar. Her first public performance was in 2015 at the first edition of TECNO OWN THE STAGE in Lagos, Nigeria, where she auditioned alongside Tanzanian singer Nandy. Through her mother, she met Diamond Platnumz, beginning as a backup singer at WCB concerts for four years before being formally signed in April 2020.

She was unveiled as the second female signee of WCB Wasafi on April 9, 2020, and immediately made history as the first WCB artist to debut with an EP. Her debut project I Am Zuchu featured seven tracks and launched her career into the stratosphere. She became the first East African female artist to exceed 100,000 YouTube subscribers within a week, earning a Silver Play Button, and the first to reach 1 million subscribers within 11 months.

In 2022, she became the most-subscribed female artist from Sub-Saharan Africa on YouTube, and the first female artist in East Africa to clock 100 million streams on Boomplay. She also became the first female artist in East Africa to earn a nomination at the MTV EMAs. In April 2023, she won five awards at the Tanzania Music Awards, and in June 2023 surpassed 500 million views on YouTube, becoming the first female artist in East Africa and the fifth female artist in Africa to achieve this milestone. Her hit songs include Wana, Sukari, Kwikwi, Napambana, Mwambieni, Honey, and Cheche with Diamond Platnumz. She received the AFRIMMA Emerging Artist Award in 2020 and five Tanzania Music Awards in 2023.

Controversies

"Zuchu"Zuchu

Zuchu’s most talked-about controversy is her romantic relationship with Diamond Platnumz, her label boss, which generated significant public debate from the moment it became known.

On the positive side, their relationship produced some of East Africa’s most beloved musical collaborations, and many fans celebrated the authenticity of their chemistry both on and off stage, pointing to songs like Cheche and Litawachoma as proof that their personal connection elevated their creative output. The couple married in 2025, a development that was widely celebrated by fans who had followed their relationship with intense interest over several years.

On the negative side, the power imbalance inherent in a relationship between a label founder and a signed artist drew sustained criticism from industry observers and gender advocates, who questioned whether Zuchu’s career trajectory could ever be fully separated from her personal relationship with the man who controlled her record label, and whether the same opportunities and promotions would have come her way without that relationship. The debate has never been definitively resolved and continues to surface whenever her career milestones are discussed.
