Also, incredible tour guides. Ours, Linda, was so super knowledgeable. She knows the collection inside and out. Her certainty was magnetic. She knew exactly where we were going and why. Our job was simple: follow, absorb, appreciate.<\/p>\n
As she led and we followed, it occurred to me that this is the brand of leadership required inside a museum. For sharing the static past. Teaching history. Not making it.<\/p>\n
But the workplace? It calls for something different. Because we\u2019re looking ahead \u2014 not behind. Yet too many leaders today are striving to embody the same certainty and authority Linda carried with her.<\/p>\n
\n\nBut we don\u2019t need tour guides. We need expedition leaders.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
We\u2019re wading through a reality that is anything but static. Dynamism is raging. Global complexity that only continues to ramp up. Technology that\u2019s evolving faster than we can learn it. We\u2019re in uncharted waters. There\u2019s no map.<\/p>\n
This is an age of exploration.<\/p>\n
We need to let go of the belief that \u201csuccessful\u201d leadership is defined by knowing and assuring and getting it right the first time.<\/p>\n
Tour-guide leadership<\/em> is what most of us were taught. We\u2019ve been rewarded for having the answer and delivering it with certainty.<\/p>\nAnd it sneaks in. In small moments we barely notice.<\/p>\n
When you feel pressure to explain what\u2019s happening before you actually understand it.<\/p>\n
When silence makes you uncomfortable, so you fill it.<\/p>\n
When your credibility feels tied to sounding certain rather than asking a better question.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s tour-guide leadership.<\/p>\n
Expedition leadership<\/em> is walking into a meeting with a perspective but asking the team what they\u2019re seeing first. It\u2019s wanting the full picture before anchoring the room.<\/p>\nIt\u2019s making decisions with incomplete information, and being explicit about it. \u201cHere\u2019s what we\u2019re betting on. Here\u2019s what could prove us wrong. Here\u2019s when we\u2019ll check.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s attending to friction. Noting when something feels slow or stuck, and asking for ideas around how to infuse it with ease and simplicity without diminishing the result.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s treating an operating model as something to keep adjusting. Meeting cadences, planning cycles, decision-making. Nothing is sacred \u2014 all is up for revision along the way.<\/p>\n
Linda was great at her job. But her job was to walk people through rooms that haven\u2019t changed in a hundred years.<\/p>\n
You\u2019re not leading through a museum. You\u2019re leading through terrain that shifts while you\u2019re standing on it.<\/p>\n
The Gardner Museum will look the same in ten years.<\/p>\n
Your organization won\u2019t.<\/p>\n
The market is moving whether you have the map or not. So is your team. The question is whether you\u2019re navigating together or they\u2019re waiting on a tour that\u2019s never going to start.<\/p>\n
