Touch just one part of it, just one allegiance, and the whole person will react, the whole drum will sound.\u201d<\/em> In thinking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2018\/01\/01\/john-o-donohue-walking-on-the-pastures-of-wonder\/\">how identity politics frays that parchment and fragments the essential wholeness of our personhood<\/a>, I was reminded of a poignant passage by neurologist <strong>Oliver Sacks<\/strong> (July 9, 1933\u2013August 30, 2015), the poet laureate of the mind, from his 1985 classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Man-Who-Mistook-His-Wife\/dp\/0684853949\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/man-who-mistook-his-wife-for-a-hat\/oclc\/927499163&amp;referer=brief_results\" target=\"_blank\"><em>public library<\/em><\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>In the twelfth chapter, titled \u201cA Matter of Identity,\u201d Dr. Sacks recounts the case of a patient with a memory disorder that rendered him unable to recognize not only others but himself \u2014 unable, that is, to retain the autobiographical facts which a person constellates into a selfhood. To compensate for this amnesiac anomaly, the man unconsciously invented countless phantasmagorical narratives about who he was and what he had done in his life, crowding the void of his identity with imagined selves and experiences he fully believed were real, were his own, far surpassing what any one person could compress into a single lifetime. It was as though he had taken Emily Dickinson\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poets.org\/poetsorg\/poem\/im-nobody-who-are-you-260\" target=\"_blank\">famous verse<\/a> <em>\u201cI\u2019m Nobody! Who are you?\u201d<\/em> and turned it on himself to answer with a resounding <em>\u201cI\u2019m Everybody!\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>But just as depression can be seen as melancholy in the complex clinical extreme and bipolar disorder as moodiness in the complex clinical extreme, every pathological malady of the mind is a complex clinical extreme of a core human tendency that inheres in each of our minds in tamer degrees. It might be said that each of us constructs and lives, a \u201cnarrative,\u201d and that this narrative <em>is<\/em> us, our identities. <\/p>\n<p>If we wish to know about a man, we ask \u201cwhat is his story \u2014 his real, inmost story?\u201d \u2014 for each of us <em>is<\/em> a biography, a story. Each of us <em>is<\/em> a singular narrative, which is constructed, continually, unconsciously, by, through, and in us \u2014 through our perceptions, our feelings, our thoughts, our actions; and, not least, our discourse, our spoken narrations. Biologically, physiologically, we are not so different from each other; historically, as narratives \u2014 we are each of us unique.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/05\/27\/ulysses-mimmo-paladino\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.themarginalian.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/ulysses_paladino1.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Illustration by Mimmo Paladino for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarginalian.org\/2014\/05\/27\/ulysses-mimmo-paladino\/\">a rare edition of James Joyce\u2019s <em>Ulysses<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sacks considers the basic existential responsibility that stems from our narrative uniqueness:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>To be ourselves we must <em>have<\/em> ourselves \u2014 possess, if need be re-possess, our life-stories. We must \u201crecollect\u201d ourselves, recollect the inner drama, the narrative, of ourselves. A man needs such a narrative, a continuous inner narrative, to maintain his identity, his self.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Man-Who-Mistook-His-Wife\/dp\/0684853949\/?tag=braipick-20\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat<\/em><\/strong><\/a> remains a classic of uncommon illumination.
