An important step was establishing an Advisory Board to guide us through the whitewater of starting a business from zero. I was 46 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very early into the startup phase, one of those advisors made me attend a meeting of the Minnesota Entrepreneur Organization, known as EO. The\u00a0meeting\u00a0speaker talked about how the most successful\u00a0founders build strategies to manage the energy required by a startup. What I remember most is this:\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Time off for rest is not a reward for good work \u2013 it\u2019s required for good work. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My initial thought:\u00a0<em>Who has time for rest?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The\u00a0Wisdom\u00a0of Aging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought about that while on\u00a0the\u00a0two-week vacation\u00a0I just returned from. The acquired wisdom is that one-week of vacations are more \u201ctime off\u201d than \u201crest.\u201d \u00a0Just one week doesn\u2019t really allow for a wind-down. Worse yet, I seem to pack so much into that week that it feels like more of a wind-up. Protecting a second week allows for some slow down time that provides restorative rest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Staycation is the Best Rest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My wife Melinda and I have taken 2 and 3-week vacations before \u2013 but they always involved heavy duty travel. We were living examples of the phrase: I need a vacation to recover from my vacation!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was my very first time taking two weeks off to NOT travel -a \u201cstaycation.\u201d The first week at home I remodeled and super-cleaned our garage. The second week I spent \u00a0\u201cup at the lake\u201d at the family cabin in Wisconsin \u2013 our 36th year! The agenda included lots of time with our adult kids and our five grandchildren and reconnecting with the larger family. There was some golf, some water sports, some pull tabs and lots of beer and sunscreen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were no airplane flights or conference calls. No need to shave. It was a true vacation, with rest to prepare for good work!<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Strengthening My Seven Fs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our firm, Good Leadership, espouses the wisdom of Blending the Seven Fs: faith, family, finances, fitness, friends, fun and future. Time off \u2013 specifically a two-week vacation \u2013 does wonders for strengthening all of the Seven Fs. And now, at age 63, I\u00a0am\u00a0realizing what the EO speaker promoted 16 years ago:\u00a0<strong>Rest is not the opposite of productivity. It\u2019s one of the main ingredients.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reality check? I\u2019ve been in the workforce long enough to accumulate enough vacation days to take a two-week vacation. I know I\u2019m fortunate. But I\u2019m not apologetic. Rather, I\u2019d appreciate knowing you are thinking about (dreaming about?) how you could manage a two-week vacation for yourself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please share with me: have you ever taken a two-week vacation for rest?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Almost seventeen years ago, my wife and I started what is now Good Leadership.
