For example,\u00a0individuals may face duplicative tests,\u00a0medication errors, or gaps in care at critical moments.\u00a0HHS recognizes\u00a0the vital role\u00a0that\u00a0innovative health information technology (health IT) plays\u00a0a vital role\u00a0in solving\u00a0these\u00a0challenges.\u00a0Improved\u00a0electronic\u00a0data exchange\u00a0can\u00a0expand access to behavioral health care, support\u00a0enhanced\u00a0care coordination, empower clinical decision-making,\u00a0and\u00a0lead to\u00a0improved\u00a0health\u00a0outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chickasaw.com\/USCDI-BH-Pilot-Program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-processed wpel-icon-right\">Behavioral Health Information Technology (BHIT) Initiative<i class=\"wpel-icon fa fa-external-link\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0addressing\u00a0the\u00a0need for\u00a0improved data exchange in\u00a0behavioral healthcare\u00a0settings.\u00a0Nine\u00a0new pilot\u00a0projects\u00a0will\u00a0advance\u00a0health\u00a0data exchange\u00a0to\u00a0improve\u00a0behavioral health\u00a0care coordination.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/news\/astp-onc-announces-selection-of-nationwide-pilot-programs-to-improve-behavioral-health-data-exchange\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">View press release announcing the pilot projects<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bhit-initiative-nbsp\"><strong>BHIT Initiative<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0BHIT\u00a0Initiative\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/behavioral-health\/samhsa-and-onc-launch-the-behavioral-health-information-technology-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">$20 million<\/a>\u00a0effort\u00a0led by\u00a0ASTP\/ONC\u00a0and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).\u00a0The effort includes\u00a0partnering\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0industry to develop the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uscdiplus.healthit.gov\/uscdiplus?id=uscdi_record&amp;table=x_g_sshh_uscdi_domain&amp;sys_id=8deaa2658778465098e5edb90cbb3597&amp;view=sp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">USCDI+ Behavioral Health (USCDI+ BH) dataset<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/build.fhir.org\/ig\/HL7\/us-behavioral-health-profiles\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" class=\"wpel-processed wpel-icon-right\">FHIR\u00ae Behavioral Health Profiles Implementation Guide (BH\u00a0IG)<i class=\"wpel-icon fa fa-external-link\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/a>\u00a0to provide standardized data elements and technical specifications to\u00a0improve the\u00a0state of\u00a0behavioral health data\u00a0exchange\u00a0across care settings.\u00a0The pilot projects\u00a0will test the USCDI+\u00a0BH dataset and\u00a0the\u00a0FHIR\u00ae\u00a0BH IG\u00a0to assess behavioral health data exchange in real world settings across the country.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pilots-nbsp-selected-nbsp\"><strong>Pilots\u00a0Selected<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0testing will not only improve the standards and technical specifications\u00a0of the\u00a0USCDI+\u00a0BH\u00a0dataset but\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0provide vital information\u00a0about providers\u2019\u00a0implementation experience\u00a0as well as\u00a0legal and policy considerations\u00a0for the broader provider community.\u00a0Pilot\u00a0participants\u00a0represent\u00a045\u00a0exchange partners across\u00a0Colorado,\u00a0Connecticut,\u00a0Delaware,\u00a0Florida,\u00a0Massachusetts,\u00a0North Carolina,\u00a0Oregon,\u00a0Rhode Island,\u00a0and Washington,\u00a0DC.\u00a0Along with technical\u00a0assistance,\u00a0ASTP\/ONC and SAMHSA will provide\u00a0funds\u00a0ranging from $300,000 to $690,000\u00a0to implement innovative, community-driven\u00a0projects\u00a0that test the USCDI+ BH dataset\u00a0and\u00a0FHIR\u00ae\u00a0BH\u00a0IG,\u00a0and support improved behavioral health\u00a0information exchange\u00a0over the next\u00a0year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"536\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/healthit.gov\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/blog_feature-graphic_bhit-initiative-light-1.png?w=1024\" alt=\"A map of the united states, showing Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Washington DC, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, and Oregon highlighted. Importantly, these pilot\u00a0projects\u00a0include participants at varying levels of health IT maturity,\u00a0increasing the likelihood that\u00a0the solutions developed can scale across diverse provider types and settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-ahead-nbsp\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilot\u00a0projects\u00a0have already begun the\u00a0initial\u00a0phase of their\u00a0work, and\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0complete by\u00a0the end of\u00a02026. The lessons learned from the pilot\u00a0projects will\u00a0inform refinements to the\u00a0USCDI+ BH\u00a0data elements and\u00a0FHIR\u00ae\u00a0BH\u00a0IG\u00a0technical specifications.\u00a0The knowledge gained\u00a0also\u00a0will shape\u00a0the development of\u00a0the\u00a0Behavioral\u00a0Health\u00a0Information\u00a0Resource\u00a0\u2013 a comprehensive\u00a0tool that\u00a0incorporates\u00a0lessons learned and best practices from the pilots,\u00a0with a planned release in 2027.\u00a0Stay tuned for more updates and find the informational resource on our website next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These pilot\u00a0projects\u00a0represent\u00a0an important step\u00a0toward a more interoperable healthcare system that supports integrated behavioral and physical health care.
