This kid is just so full of joy, energy, excitement.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mason\u2019s favourite things include monster trucks, dinosaurs and caterpillar roller coasters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne hard thing five years in is he\u2019s growing up in a world that\u2019s not made for him,\u201d Lindsay \u00a0says. \u201cAccessibility, inclusion\u2014we\u2019ve come so far, but there\u2019s so much farther to go. We can\u2019t just be parents anymore. We\u2019re caregivers. We\u2019re advocates. We\u2019re funding experts, writing all applications. And there are just so many more tasks that are on our plate when we just want to be mom and dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Collaborative care works best for Mason, Lindsay says, so she and Mike don\u2019t have to \u201cexplain the same story over and over again to different care providers\u2026 It\u2019s really great that all the doctors, the specialists, the care team [at Holland Bloorview] work together. They communicate.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finding other parents of children with SMA on social media helped after Mason\u2019s diagnosis \u201cfrom a medical perspective but also social [one], to just connect with other families who get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lindsay says she\u2019s learned that grief and gratitude can be intertwined. \u201cTwo things can be true at once. You can be filled with immense joy and also grief at the same time\u2026 It\u2019s okay to grieve the life that you might have thought that you had, but it\u2019s also okay to be grateful that you now know what you\u2019re dealing with, and you can figure out your next steps for treatment.
