Every June, as the first heavy showers flood Bengaluru’s low-lying wards, a familiar routine kicks in across hundreds of homes near community dog spots. Someone hunts for a cardboard box in the storeroom, wraps a tarpaulin around it, and leaves it under the compound gate before the next downpour. It looks like a small gesture.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For an estimated 2,70,000 stray dogs living through the city’s monsoon, it can be the difference between staying dry and developing a fever that turns dangerous within days.<\/p>\n

Bengaluru’s community feeders, canine squads and shelters have spent years working out what actually helps a street dog survive the wet months, and their routine has settled into a clear chain. A dry dog needs to stay fed. A well-fed dog can still fall sick if its food or water carries bacteria.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And even the healthiest dog can pick up a wound or a tick that, left untreated, becomes an emergency. Shelter, food and first aid are not three separate tasks so much as one continuous act of care, and none of it requires special training or a large budget.<\/p>\n

How a cardboard box becomes a dog\u2019s home\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The classic monsoon shelter starts with a sturdy cardboard box. Cut a small entrance into one side, line the inside with a sheet of plastic or tarpaulin so the cardboard itself never touches water, and place it in a raised, sheltered spot such as under a stairwell or awning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A single shelter built this way costs under Rs 500, and for larger colonies, an old blanket or banner strung between two supports does the same job.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dry kibble, plain biscuits or boiled rice with chicken or egg can provide community dogs with nutritious food without upsetting their digestion during the rains.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Locality groups such as Cubbon Park Canines, which feeds around 120 dogs in the park, and the wider network run by the CJ Memorial Trust track which dogs use which shelters, so a missing animal is noticed within a day rather than a week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some squads go further and fit dogs with reflective collars<\/a> so they stay visible after dark, when rain and poor visibility raise the risk of road accidents. A dry dog, though, is still a hungry one, and shelter alone does not keep a stray healthy through four months of rain.<\/p>\n

The right food can make all the difference in the rains\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

That is where feeding comes in, and here the goal is less about quantity than about keeping food dry and gentle on a stray’s stomach.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dry kibble or plain biscuits, stored in an airtight container, hold up far better in the humidity than left-over curry or wet bread, and boiled rice mixed with a little boiled chicken or egg, without salt or spice, fills a dog up without upsetting its digestion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From building shelters to spotting wounds and ticks early, Bengaluru\u2019s community feeders rely on simple daily interventions to help stray dogs survive the wet season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Most feeders now skip milk altogether, since many strays are lactose intolerant, using diluted curd instead when puppies need something soft.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A clean, covered water bowl matters just as much as the food in it, since stagnant puddles are a major source of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection carried in floodwater that can prove fatal within days.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even so, a dog that is dry and well fed can still turn up with a torn ear, an embedded tick or a small cut that a fly finds before anyone else does, which is why the third habit in the chain, a basic first-aid pouch, tends to matter most during the wettest weeks.<\/p>\n

A first-aid kit that helps before the vet arrives\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The pouch itself fits into a tote bag. A small bottle of povidone-iodine solution, sold as Betadine or Cipladine at any chemist, cleans a fresh wound without stinging as much as spirit or Dettol, both harsher on canine skin than human skin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

An antiseptic powder keeps the cleaned wound dry, which matters more in the rains since damp wounds are exactly where flies lay eggs, and a dab of an ayurvedic fly-repellent ointment such as Himax over a healing cut is often what stops it turning into a maggot wound within 48 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A fine-toothed tick comb or blunt tweezers lets a feeder lift an attached tick close to the skin, since a bite can pass on ehrlichiosis or babesiosis within hours; the tick then goes into soapy water, never crushed between fingers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gloves, a torch, a soft muzzle and the saved number of a nearby vet or rescue group such as Sarvoham Animal Foundation<\/a> or Charlie’s Animal Rescue Centre<\/a> round out the kit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What stays out is anything dosed by body weight, such as antibiotics, dewormers or ivermectin, since a guessed dose on a stray of unknown weight can do real harm.<\/p>\n

Pale gums, laboured breathing, a swollen limb or a foul-smelling wound are signs to photograph, note the location of, and report to a vet or NGO helpline at once, rather than treat at home. The pouch is built to hold a dog steady for a day or two, not to replace the vet it eventually needs.<\/p>\n

None of this depends on grand infrastructure. It depends on residents who notice a soaked, shivering dog outside their gate and decide to act, in the spirit of the couple who once turned their own compound into a shelter for over 85 rescued strays<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Across Bengaluru, thousands of small acts of care decide whether a street dog makes it through the monsoon. A cardboard box, a bowl of safe food and a basic first-aid kit may seem simple, but together they can mean the difference between survival and suffering for the city\u2019s 2.7 lakh community dogs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
