The defense in the Lindsay Clancy filicide case called the defendant\u2019s mother as one of its first witnesses Monday, after three weeks of prosecution evidence laid out, in often harrowing detail, events surrounding Clancy\u2019s killing of her three children.<\/p>\n

Under questioning from defense attorney Kevin Reddington, Clancy\u2019s mother, Paula Musgrove, testified that her daughter\u2019s statements and actions had unsettled her in the months leading up to 24 January 2023.<\/p>\n

Clancy, Musgrove testified to the court in Plymouth, Massachusetts, had asked if she could sleep in her mother\u2019s bed and told her she felt the medication she had been prescribed for postpartum depression<\/a> were \u201cdestroying\u201d her mind.<\/p>\n

Musgrove also disclosed that on one occasion her daughter had approached her and Lindsay\u2019s former husband, Patrick Clancy, and said: \u201cI want to tell you guys something\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said she had thoughts of harming the children,\u201d Musgrove testified.<\/p>\n

Patrick has previously told the court of his former wife\u2019s statement and said she told him she had no plans to hurt the kids. Jurors have heard testimony from Patrick that his wife \u200btold him after the killings, while in hospital, that she\u2019d \u201cheard a man\u2019s voice telling her that if she didn\u2019t do it now, she would lose her chance, or something like that\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lindsay\u2019s mother also said she received a text from her daughter on 20 October, three months before the killings. \u201cI\u2019m really sick. Something is wrong,\u201d Lindsay wrote, saying she didn\u2019t know how she would get through each day, and that medicine had not helped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to be alone,\u201d Lindsay added in the text.<\/p>\n

Musgrove went to her daughter\u2019s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts<\/a>, and stayed for a week. In the following months, Musgrove and her husband made repeated trips from their home in Connecticut.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn November and December, it was not getting better,\u201d Musgrove testified, adding that Lindsay was losing weight and becoming \u201cparanoid\u201d. Musgrove said her daughter had said \u201cthis wasn\u2019t her mind\u201d and said \u201cthis isn\u2019t me. I just want to feel better and enjoy my kids again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lindsay\u2019s defense is seeking to show she was suffering from a broad array of depressive symptoms, for which she had sought psychiatric help<\/a> in the months leading up to the killing. Reddington argues the killings were driven by postpartum mental illness and not an intentional act, as prosecutors contend, followed by an insincere suicide attempt.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lindsay, 36, is charged with the murders of her children, Cora, five, Dawson, three and eight-month-old Callan. Lindsay does not deny she fatally strangled her children \u2013 but has pleaded not guilty to murder, by reason of insanity or, under Massachusetts statutes, a lack of criminal responsibility.<\/p>\n

If convicted of first-degree murder Lindsay faces life in prison without parole. If jurors find her not guilty, due to lack of criminal responsibility or by reason of insanity, she would be committed to a state psychiatric hospital.<\/p>\n

Allison Ozga, Lindsay\u2019s sister, testified that in the months leading up to the killings she had learned that her sister was having suicidal thoughts. \u201cShe\u2019s feeling numb, she\u2019s feeling hopeless,\u201d Ozga said.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Monday, the prosecution rested after calling Ian Whiffin, \u200ca digital forensic expert tasked with examining Lindsay\u2019s cellphone to look at her search history, \u200ccalls, text messages and health data.<\/p>\n

Whiffin said that at 5pm on the night of the killings, Lindsay had climbed two flights of stairs and spoken by phone with her husband, who was then at a pharmacy collecting constipation medication and going to pick up a takeout.<\/p>\n

In the days prior, Whiffin testified, Lindsay searched online \u200bfor \u201chow quickly does Wellbutrin work for depression\u201d, giving a brand name for a medication used to treat major depression, and \u201cketamine for suicidal ideation\u201d. Five days before killing the children, on 19 January, she searched \u201csymptoms of postpartum psychosis\u201d and \u201cpsychosis symptoms\u201d.<\/p>\n
