It’s the symptom.

If we only focus on stopping the barking without addressing why it happens, we’re suppressing the communication of a dog’s feelings.

This may make the dog “shove down” that emotion, but its’ still there waiting to boil to the surface again (or show in different negative ways in a dog’s behavior).

Why Dachshunds Are More Prone to Leash Reactivity

Any breed can become leash reactive, but Dachshunds have a few characteristics that can make them more likely to struggle.

First, they’re small. The world can feel much bigger and more intimidating when you’re twelve inches off the ground and another dog is twice your size.

Second, Dachshunds were bred to notice things and sound the alarm. Their willingness to bark wasn’t an accident. It was a valuable trait for the job they were originally bred to do.

Finally, many Dachshunds have learned through experience that other dogs don’t always respect their personal space. Larger dogs may rush up to them, loom over them, or try to play more roughly than your Dachshund is comfortable with.

Even a friendly interaction can feel overwhelming from their perspective.

That doesn’t mean every reactive Dachshund is afraid. Some become frustrated because they desperately want to greet the other dog but can’t. Others are simply overwhelmed by the excitement of the situation.

Different emotions can produce very similar-looking behavior.

Reactivity Almost Always Starts Before the Barking

One of the biggest mistakes owners make is believing that it just “happened out of nowhere.”

In reality, most dogs give several warning signs before they ever bark.

Learning to recognize those early signals gives you the opportunity to help your Dachshund before they’re too emotionally overwhelmed to think.

Some early signs include:

Closing their mouth after previously panting or “grimacing” (corners of the mouth become tight)

Slowing down or freezing and staring at the other dog

Standing and shifting shifting their weight forward

Ears becoming very still or moving forward (look at the base)

Holding their tail unusually high and stiff or tucking it between their legs

Looking one direction but “side eying” another dog, showing the whites of their eyes (called “whale eye”)

Giving a little growl

These signs tell you your Dachshund is becoming concerned or overly excited, which is a warning sign for you to intervene.

Understanding Threshold

You’ll often hear trainers talk about a dog’s threshold.

Threshold is the point between when a dog notices something, becomes focused on it, but can still think, respond to cues, eat treats, and engage with you and when they can’t.

Once they cross that threshold, it’s like their brain and ears turn off. At that point, they’re reacting instead of thinking.

This is when you see barking, lunging, spinning, pulling, or frantic behavior and any attempts to teach them to do something different will fail.

One of the biggest goals of working with a reactive dog is preventing them from repeatedly going over threshold.

This often means giving them more distance from other dogs than you think they need and advocating for their space (article coming soon).

Many owners feel like moving away is “giving in”, but it’s not.

Creating distance is often the kindest and most effective thing you can do because it helps your Dachshund feel more comfortable and revert back to a frame of mind where learning is actually possible.

What Might Be Triggering Your Dachshund

Every reactive dog has their own triggers.

Some react to every dog they see.

Others only react when another dog:

Walks directly toward them

Stares at them

Pulls hard on the leash

Is unusually energetic

Appears suddenly around a corner

Invades their personal space

The environment matters too.

A narrow sidewalk gives your dog fewer options than a wide trail.

A quiet morning walk is often easier than navigating a crowded farmers market.

Many dogs react to other “scary” things to like garbage trucks, moving vehicles, people, kids, or skateboards.

Paying attention to these patterns can help you avoid situations that are simply too difficult while you’re working on improving your dog’s confidence.

How to Help Your Reactive Dachshund

There isn’t one magic exercise that fixes leash reactivity.

Instead, lasting improvement usually comes from consistently helping your Dachshund feel safer and make better choices over time.

Give your dog enough space

Distance is one of the most powerful training tools you have.

Creating distance between your dog and what upsets them can make it easier for them to handle.

If your reactive Dachshund notices another dog but can still respond to you, you’re far enough away at the moment, but you probably shouldn’t get any closer.

In this case, just get your Dachshund’s attention and cross the street, step into a driveway, or step behind a barrier like a car or tree so the other dog is not in your Dachshund’s direct line of sight.

If they won’t eat treats, won’t look at you, or immediately begin barking, you’re too close and an emergency exit is in order.

Don’t drag your Dachshund away by the leash, but do everything you can to redirect your dog’s focus on you and get them to follow you (like making a loud, excited noise to refocus them and then verbally build excitement to follow you).

In my opinion, picking your Dachshund up and walking away if you need to is not a failure.

If your Dachshund is truly panicking and unable to learn, getting them out of the situation isn’t reinforcing bad behavior. It’s helping them recover.

It’s just smart management.

Reward attention on you

Rather than waiting for your Dachshund to react, make a sharp noise like a “cluck” with our tongue, or say “beep”, and reward your dog for turning to look at you before they become overwhelmed.

Maybe they glance at the other dog and then look back at you.

Maybe they choose to keep walking without staring.

Those small moments deserve reinforcement because they’re the behaviors you want to see more often.

Skip unnecessary greetings

Many owners believe every walk should include meeting other dogs.

In reality, calmly walking past another dog is a much more useful life skill.

Not every dog enjoys greeting strangers, and they don’t need to (that goes for both your dog and the other dog).

Teaching your Dachshund that other dogs can simply exist nearby without interacting removes a tremendous amount of pressure from your walks.

Frustratingly though, a lot of people feel entitled to pet your dog, so you may need to learn to advocate for their space (article coming soon).

Meet your dog’s needs outside of walks

This is the part many training articles leave out.

A walk isn’t your dog’s only opportunity for exercise, exploration, problem-solving, or social interaction.

Dogs who regularly have opportunities to sniff, forage, explore new places, solve puzzles, and engage in species-appropriate enrichment activities are often better equipped to handle the challenges of everyday life.

Enrichment won’t cure leash reactivity by itself, but when your dog’s physical, mental, and emotional needs are consistently being met, they’re often more equipped to cope when something stressful happens on a walk.

What You Should Avoid Doing

I get it – when you become frustrated, or feel embarrassed, it’s difficult to make the right choice in the moment. We often become reactive to our Dachshund’s reactivity.

Without meaning to, we can accidentally make the problem worse.

Try to avoid:

Yanking on the leash and yelling at your Dachshund to stop

Punishing your Dachshund for barking or growling

Forcing your dog to greet dogs they’re uncomfortable around

Continuing to walk directly toward a trigger when your Dachshund is clearly struggling

Repeatedly putting your dog in situations where they react

Remember, barking is information. Your Dachshund is communicating that something about the situation feels difficult.

Listening to that information gives you a much better chance of helping them than trying to suppress it.

Remember not to beat yourself up if you make one of these mistakes though. Like our dogs, we don’t always make the best choices when we are stressed.

Nothing you do once or twice is a disaster. it’s unfixable, so just do the best you can and learn from the experience.

Will My Dachshund Ever Stop Barking and Lunging?

Many Dachshunds make tremendous progress with patient, consistent training.

Some eventually walk calmly past other dogs with little concern.

Others always prefer a little extra space and that’s okay.

Success isn’t creating a dog who loves every dog they meet.

Success is helping your Dachshund feel safe enough that they can notice another dog without immediately going over threshold.

For many families, that means walks become calmer, less stressful, and far more enjoyable for both ends of the leash.

If you have a reactive Dachshund and want help figuring out what will help your dog behave better next time, sign up for my Behavior & Training Clarity Session.

Sometimes a fresh set of experienced eyes can identify patterns and solutions that are difficult to see when you’re the one holding the leash every day.

Final Thoughts

If your Dachshund barks and lunges at other dogs on walks, try not to think of them as being stubborn, dominant, or “bad.”

They’re having a hard time, not trying to give you a hard time.

Once you start looking beyond the barking and paying attention to what your Dachshund is feeling, your approach naturally changes.

Instead of trying to stop the behavior in the moment, you begin helping them feel safer before they ever need to react.

That shift takes patience, but it’s also what creates lasting change.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="600" height="900" src="https://youdidwhatwithyourweiner.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Dachshund-Bark-and-Lunge-PIN-600x900.jpg" alt="When a Dachshund barks, lunges, growls, or snaps at another dog while restrained by a leash, the behavior is commonly called leash reactivity.
