\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This opening mischaracterizes the Protestant question as a \u201cchallenge,\u201d implying rhetorical gamesmanship. In reality, Protestants ask this because their doctrinal method is grounded in Sola Scriptura. By framing it as a challenge, Beaumont begins with a caricature rather than an accurate representation of Protestant epistemology.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cTwo common response strategies include trying to find a biblical reference\u2026 or asking, \u2018Where in the Bible does it say something must be in the Bible before you can believe it?\u2019\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The second response is a category mistake. Protestants do not claim that everything one believes must be in Scripture. They claim that binding doctrine must be grounded in Scripture.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This \u201cthird strategy\u201d is not a strategy, but a rhetorical pivot. It shifts the discussion away from the Protestant methodological question and toward Roman Catholic claims of ecclesial authority.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cImagine\u2026 Baptists found a verse that said, \u2018Baptism does not save.\u2019 Calvinists found a verse that said\u2026 \u2018by faith alone.\u2019 Evangelicals found a verse that said communion is symbolic.”<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 These hypothetical verses are caricatures. Protestant theology does not depend on isolated slogan\u2011like proof texts. It is built on canonical synthesis, linguistic analysis, and historical context.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cOf course, these verses are not in Scripture.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This is irrelevant. Protestant theology does not require such verses to exist. The absence of simplistic slogans does not undermine Protestant doctrine, for Protestant theology is not built on slogans.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cProtestants build their scriptural cases\u2026 from more indirect passages that likely seem clear to them in the light of their prior theological positions.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This insinuates that Protestants read Scripture through bias while Catholics do not. In reality, every tradition interprets Scripture through a theological framework. Roman Catholicism reads Scripture through magisterial tradition and dogmatic commitments. Beaumont\u2019s claim is self\u2011exempting and therefore invalid.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cCatholics must do the same thing\u2026 the Church relies on more than just Scripture for help.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This is precisely the Protestant critique: Catholic doctrine often requires extra\u2011biblical authorities because Scripture does not teach them at all. Beaumont admits the Protestant objection while pretending it is a neutral observation.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cIn the above examples\u2026 Catholics do in fact have rather clear biblical proof texts.\u201d

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The passages cited are not \u201cclear proof texts.\u201d They are contested passages with other plausible interpretations. Beaumont simply assumes Catholic readings as the obvious meaning without demonstrating them.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cAs to baptism\u2026 \u2018Baptism\u2026 now saves you\u2019 (1 Pet. 3:20\u201321).\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Peter immediately qualifies this by saying baptism saves \u201cnot as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience.\u201d Beaumont ignores the qualification, which complicates the Catholic reading and undermines his claim of clarity.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cWhen it comes to salvation\u2026 \u2018A man is justified\u2026 not by faith alone\u2019 (James 2:20\u201324).\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 James uses \u201cjustify\u201d in a demonstrative sense (i.e., vindication before men), while Paul uses it in a forensic sense (i.e., God\u2019s declaration). Beaumont conflates two distinct uses of the term and assumes the Catholic interpretation without argument.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Paul\u2019s warning concerns reverence and moral seriousness, not metaphysical transformation. \u201cDiscerning the body\u201d refers to recognizing the sacredness of the ordinance, not transubstantiation. Beaumont again assumes the Catholic interpretation as self\u2011evident.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u201cWhat is interesting is that\u2026 what the Bible says\u2026 is precisely what the Catholic Church teaches.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 This is circular. Douglas Beaumont asserts Catholic interpretations as the plain meaning of Scripture and then concludes that Scripture supports Catholicism. He never demonstrates that the Catholic interpretation is the correct one.<\/p>\n

Augustine, Chrysostom, Ambrosiaster, and others offer interpretations closer to Protestant views than to later Catholic dogma. Beaumont\u2019s historical narrative is inaccurate.<\/p>\n
