The line arrives with a smirk you can almost hear: “Bet you thought we’d stop.” It’s the kind of opening that doesn’t ask for permission, delivered with the confidence of someone who has heard the doubts and is simply stating a fact. Tinashe’s “Melatonin” arrived August 13, the latest preview of her upcoming eighth studio album Popstar, due September 25 via Nice Life Recording Company and Atlantic Records .

The title is a metaphor that takes the phrase “sleeping on me” and builds a whole track around it. The chorus lands with a direct address: “Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping on me / Bitch, you so melatonin.” It’s a dismissal of anyone who underestimated her, delivered with the kind of energy that doesn’t leave room for negotiation . The production, handled by Tinashe alongside Zack Sekoff, Nick Weiss, Ricky Reed, and Ike Schultz, pushes further into the electronic sound she’s been exploring, blending intercutting beats with a hypnotic, pulsing energy .

The music video, directed by 91 Rules (Kelela, Destroy Lonely), is a celebration of dance, spotlighting performers across a range of styles including ballet, hip-hop, and ballroom . Tinashe commands the screen in a series of avant-garde looks that match the track’s bold creative vision. The video follows the album’s other singles—the June release “Too Easy” and the July single “Crash Out,” which was promoted with a viral stunt where Tinashe was seen smashing a white BMW with a sledgehammer . It’s the kind of rollout that signals she’s not just releasing an album; she’s building a world.
