Ask any OU alum what their favorite housing memory was, and nine times out of ten, it\u2019s the house. There\u2019s something about renting a house with your friends that just hits differently: a real kitchen, a yard, a porch to sit on, actual rooms with actual doors, space to spread out and exist like a full human being. Houses feel like homes in a way that most apartments in Athens, Ohio, simply don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The financial case for houses makes a lot of sense when you\u2019re moving in with a group. Split four or five ways, a house in Athens can come out significantly cheaper per person than everyone renting their own apartment. Utilities are the first thing that catches students off guard. Unlike many apartments, houses rarely include utilities in the rent. You\u2019re covering electricity, gas, water, internet, and trash separately. In an older Athens house with poor insulation, your heating bill in January and February can be genuinely painful. Students have reported electricity and gas combined running well over $150-200 a month during peak winter months in some houses. It\u2019s worth having direct conversations with your future housemates before you sign a lease, not just about the fun stuff but about expectations around chores, guests, quiet hours, and how you\u2019ll split things if someone\u2019s payment is late.<\/p>\n

One thing that doesn\u2019t come up as often but is worth knowing: depending on which neighborhood you\u2019re looking at in Athens, there are local zoning rules that limit how many unrelated people can occupy a single house. It\u2019s worth confirming your rental situation is above board before committing, especially if you\u2019re in a larger group.<\/p>\n
