Every believer knows the feeling of being outside the fence. Somewhere along the way, distraction, busyness, or plain drift carries us away from the place where peace lives, and we spend all our strength trying to claw our way back in. This devotional is about what happens next \u2014 and about who actually opens the gate.<\/p>\n
Picture a duck pen<\/a>. The enclosure is where the ducks belong \u2014 fed, sheltered, accounted for. But ducks wander. A gap in the fence, a moment of curiosity, and suddenly a duck is outside the enclosure it was made to stay in.<\/p>\n Here is the strange part: the duck does not want to stay out. It paces the fence line. It presses against the wire. It strains and strains, wearing itself out trying to force its own way back into the one place it was ever meant to be. But a duck cannot open a gate. No amount of straining on its own side of the fence will get it back in. The only way home is for the owner \u2014 the one who built the pen and knows every duck by name \u2014 to walk over, lift the latch, and let it in.<\/p>\n This is not a picture of losing salvation. A duck that wanders off is still the owner\u2019s duck. What is lost is not its identity \u2014 it is its peace, its rest, its place of provision. That is the condition Paul describes when believers drift from the fellowship and rest God intended for them, and it is why his letters spend so much time pointing us back to grace rather than effort.<\/p>\n Philippians 4:6\u20137 reads, \u201cBe careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.\u201d Peace is not produced by our straining against the fence \u2014 it is kept by God, on His terms, through prayer.<\/p>\n Galatians 6:1 instructs, \u201cBrethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness.\u201d Restoration is something done \u2014 gently, by someone else \u2014 not something the wandering believer wrestles out of themselves.<\/p>\n Ephesians 2:8\u20139 reminds us why straining never works in the first place: \u201cFor by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.\u201d If we were not brought in by our own effort at the start, we will not be kept at peace by our own effort now.<\/p>\n If you feel like you are outside the fence today \u2014 worn out, pacing, straining to fix what feels<\/em> broken between you and the Lord \u2014 stop pressing against the wire. That strategy was never going to work for the duck, and it will not work for you. Stop trying to force your own way back into peace, accept that the work is already done and peace is waiting.<\/p>\n Instead, come to the gate. Come to the Word, come to prayer, come to the fellowship of other believers who can walk over and lift the latch for you the way Galatians 6:1 describes. The Owner already knows where you are. He is not waiting for you to earn your way back in \u2014 He is waiting for you to stop straining long enough to let Him open the gate.<\/p>\n This week, name the \u201cfence\u201d you have been straining against on your own \u2014 a habit, a relationship, a season of distraction. Bring it to God in prayer using the pattern of Philippians 4:6\u20137<\/a>, and let someone in your fellowship help carry you back in, rather than trying to climb the wire alone.<\/p>\n \t\t
