After all, those qualities are often exactly what make them so exciting to read about. But push those traits too far and they can become limitations. A hero who rarely fails has little room to grow, while one who never needs anyone else has fewer opportunities to form the relationships that give their successes or failures emotional weight. Flaws and vulnerabilities aren’t simply imperfections to overcome, but some of the most useful tools an author has for making readers genuinely care about what happens next.

James Bond is a shining example of this. The famously polished secret agent is confident, capable, independent, and always ready with the right move. But that doesn’t leave much room to grow, or give other characters as many opportunities to play meaningful roles in his journey. According to Ginger, that’s one of the most refreshing things about the new video game 007 First Light, which takes us back to the James Bond origin story, where our hero is much messier, more reckless, and willing to rely on others. And that’s what makes this version of Bond so effective, while reminding authors that sometimes the qualities that make a hero less perfect are exactly what make their story more compelling.

Sorry. I know, I know… I keep dragging James Bond into these articles like a persistent double agent who just won’t take a hint. But this time, I promise it’s worth it. If you’ve read my pieces on mining the James Bond formula for your own fiction or wrestling with whether writing an official James Bond novel would be a dream or a nightmare, you’ll know I can’t shut up about what makes Ian Fleming’s creation tick. And now? I’ve just finished 007 First Light, the new IO Interactive game I’ve been counting down to for months.

I was blown away.

Playing the game felt like stepping straight into a James Bond movie: cinematic cutscenes, a pulse-pounding theme that builds to an absolute roar, and gameplay that puts you in the suit. The game is clearly made by people who love the franchise. It’s packed with clever Easter eggs and respectful nods, yet it delivers the most exciting Bond story in generations by daring to reinvent the character as a young, brash, and cocky 26-year-old recruit rather than the polished, world-weary veteran we usually meet.

I found myself astonished at how much better the story was than many recent Bond films (especially Quantum of Solace and Spectre). It sidesteps the “safe” tropes of an experienced older agent and takes a more dynamic, raw approach to his origin than even 2006’s Casino Royale. There are echoes of Kingsman in the cadet training sequences, but ironically, it even manages to do those better—reinventing what was already a reinvention of the James Bond formula!

What worked especially well was the ensemble cast of characters you genuinely learn to care about. There are Bond’s fellow cadets Cressida Bright and Lennox Monroe, plus his reluctant mentor John Greenway (brilliantly played by Lennie James) and, of course, a new spin on M and Q.

This is a shift, because in the movies and books, James Bond is largely a solitary animal. Instead, the game creates a true ensemble that’s even more successful than the one the recent films tried to create with “Eve” Moneypenny and a younger Q.

The format of playable missions helps with this, pushing you into forming real emotional attachments to these characters which pays off by delivering genuine anxiety about their safety later in the story!

Many of the essential Bond tropes remain, and we’d be offended if they didn’t. You get gadgets galore, globe-trotting missions, high-stakes chases, and that unmistakable James Bond swagger—but because it’s an origin story the game actually makes you earn them through Bond-like behavior.

In fact, you don’t even get to hear the full, iconic James Bond theme until the very climax of the game, in the final showdown against your nemesis. It’s exciting, engaging, fresh, and original. For the first time in over a decade, I finished a Bond story and felt genuinely excited about where the character could go next.

And here’s where it gets useful for us self-published authors.

What made First Light so effective is something every indie writer can learn from, a deeply flawed protagonist who makes mistakes but still keeps trying to do the right thing. Paired with a supporting cast you become genuinely attached to, the emotional investment you make playing the game leaves the story feeling much more epic than even a typically explosive Bond adventure.

In Ian Fleming’s original novels, Bond is often a lone wolf operating on instinct and skill. First Light shows us a messier, less cynical version: reckless, headstrong, sometimes insubordinate, but willing to rely on others while slowly forging himself into the legend he’ll eventually become.

Watching (and playing) Bond as he grows through training, failure, and hard-won victories creates a character arc that feels earned and deeply satisfying. The relationships (especially with Greenway and his fellow cadets) add layers of tension, loyalty, betrayal, and loss to the storyline that elevates the whole narrative experience.

And as a self-published author, it excited me! It reminded me that we have the freedom to do exactly this in our own stories. The advantage to being self-published is that we don’t have to play it safe for a studio or committee. We can give our heroes real flaws, real consequences, and real people around them who matter.

Too often in genre fiction—thrillers, action, even romance—we fall into the trap of the invincible lone protagonist. First Light reminds us that stakes hit harder when your hero has something (or someone) to lose, and when the supporting cast isn’t just window dressing but living, breathing characters with their own arcs.

I finished the game and immediately started rethinking how I approach my own stories. I realize now that I want more emotional connections. More consequences. My books need more of those gut-punches when things go wrong for people the reader has really grown to care about.

I think many self-published authors might secretly feel the same. Whether you’re writing about spies, bikers, detectives, or space marines, the principle holds: Flawed heroes who try to do the right thing, and ensemble casts of relatable characters, combine to make the victories and losses in your story land with real weight, turning a good tale into an unforgettable one.

What I learned from playing First Light:

Write the messy origin. Unlike most James Bond films, you don’t need to start with your protagonist at peak competence. Let us see them struggle, fail, and earn their swagger. Readers connect more deeply with growth than perfection.

Build real relationships. Give your hero allies, mentors, rivals, and friends who challenge them. Make your readers care about the ensemble, then use that to raise the emotional stakes (or emotionally devastate your audience!)

Earn your tropes. All genre fiction has tropes, even if they’re not as pronounced as in a James Bond movie. But don’t hand the reader the “cool stuff” for free. Build to them. Delay the “theme music” (or the essential trope equivalent in your genre) until it actually means something and feels earned.

Honor the particular. Just like in grief writing, lean into the personal details to make your stories feel more real. There’s a scene in First Light in which the player has to choose between two pieces of art to display on the wall of their shared flat—one belonging to Cressida, and one to Monroe. While that simple choice has no effect on the gameplay, it makes us players develop an attachment to the cadets which makes us feel genuine anxiety when a later mission goes sideways. You can use small human interactions like this to make your readers truly care.

007 First Light isn’t just a great game. It’s also a masterclass in modern storytelling that respects the source material while daring to make it feel new again. For those of us grinding away at our keyboards, trying to build audiences and craft stories that stick with readers long after the last page, it’s inspiring proof that bold choices and human connections still win.

James Bond will return, as the movies love to say, and thanks to First Light, I’m excited to see what comes next. Both for him, and for the stories we’re all writing in his shadow.

Ginger is also known as Roland Hulme – a digital Don Draper with a Hemingway complex.
