But the new stay will remain in place \u201cpending further order\u201d (likely, the Court\u2019s full decision), allowing construction to continue for now. It\u2019s the latest in a series of escapes for the project, despite adverse rulings in lower courts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><strong>What have other judges said?<\/strong> Earlier this month, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a previous district court ruling that Trump had exceeded his authority in unilaterally pursuing the ballroom project and would need to seek congressional approval to continue. (Trump, meanwhile, has attempted to justify the project on national security grounds, describing it as a \u201cMilitary Complex\u201d and its opponents as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/trumpstruth.org\/statuses\/40863\">TREASONISTS<\/a>.\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">Both the appeals court decision and the previous district court decision had been paused, however, to allow the appeals process to play out. That pause would have expired on Friday, but for Roberts\u2019s order.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><strong>How far along is the project?<\/strong> Trump has been working fast. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/14\/us\/politics\/trump-ballroom-white-house-supreme-court.html\">According to Trump\u2019s solicitor general<\/a>, the ballroom was already 65 percent complete last week, standing around 70 feet tall and five stories below ground. Crews have been working on the project nearly around the clock \u2014 20 hours per day, seven days a week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><strong>What else should I know?<\/strong> When the full Supreme Court <em>does<\/em> weigh in, it could have implications far beyond just the ballroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/499692\/supreme-court-trump-ballroom-bye-bye-environment\">As my colleague Ian Millhiser explained<\/a> earlier this week, the ability of the plaintiffs challenging the ballroom to bring their case in the first place hinges on the \u201caesthetic injury\u201d theory of standing, which also underpins a great deal of US environmental law.
