It\u2019s approachable, scalable, and flexible enough to serve as a base for countless variations from coffee and chocolate to peanut butter and beyond.\n<p>The goal isn\u2019t sweetness overload or aggressive roast, but a smooth, creamy body with layered roast character and a clean finish that invites another sip.<\/p>\n<p>Target:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Batch Size:<\/strong> 5 gallons<\/li>\n<li><strong>ABV:<\/strong> 5.4%<\/li>\n<li><strong>OG:<\/strong> 1.055<\/li>\n<li><strong>FG:<\/strong> 1.012\u20131.014<\/li>\n<li><strong>IBU:<\/strong> 35<\/li>\n<li><strong>Color:<\/strong> Deep black, opaque in the glass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The backbone of this stout starts with a solid British base malt, supported by classic stout adjuncts that contribute body, head retention, and roast complexity.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maris Otter Pale Malt (8 lb):<\/strong> Provides a rich, bready malt foundation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flaked Barley (1 lb):<\/strong> Adds creaminess and that signature stout mouthfeel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roasted Barley (0.75 lb):<\/strong> Delivers classic dry roast and coffee notes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chocolate Malt (0.5 lb):<\/strong> Softens the roast with cocoa-like depth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crystal 60L (0.5 lb):<\/strong> Adds subtle caramel sweetness to balance bitterness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, these malts create a stout that\u2019s layered but never heavy-handed.<\/p>\n<p>Mash in temp should be around 154 degrees for a fuller body.<\/p>\n<p>Hops:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>East Kent Goldings \u2013 1.5 oz at 60 minutes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earthy and classic, EKG provides firm bitterness without clashing with roasted malts. We like Fuggle and Willamette as well for substitutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yeast:<\/p>\n<p>We like to keep it simple at Afterglow and use San Diego\/ Chico or Nottingham yeast.<br \/>Typically we will ferment at 68 degrees for a clean profile and traditional esters.<\/p>\n<p>If you really want to have some fun with this recipe, it is a great base for making other fun stouts.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oatmeal Stout:<\/strong> Swap flaked barley for flaked oats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coffee Stout:<\/strong> Add cold-brewed coffee at packaging.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chocolate Stout:<\/strong> Introduce cacao nibs post-fermentation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peanut Butter Stout:<\/strong> Some people will use powdered peanut butter in secondary. We prefer Amoretti flavorings for most adjuncts.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great stout doesn\u2019t need to be complicated.
