Four Candles Brewery in Broadstairs is aiming to a new home, eight months after the business closed its doors.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s owner is hoping to find a new home for the brewery that operated behind the tiny pub, and potentially for the Four Candles name and brewing story as well.<\/p>\n

The Four Candles opened in 2012 as Britain\u2019s 12th micropub and later installed its own compact brewery, becoming Britain\u2019s smallest brewpub. <\/p>\n

The 2.5 barrel system was chosen because it was the largest brewery that could physically be fitted into the cellar at 1 Sowell Street.<\/p>\n

The brewery can produce around 440 litres \u2013 approximately 11 nine-gallon casks \u2013 in a brew and operates on ordinary single-phase electricity. Alongside the main brewing vessels and fermenters are pumps, a heat exchanger, cask-washing equipment and other ancillary equipment. There are also 95 steel and 47 plastic casks.<\/p>\n

When the Four Candles closed in December, owner Mike Beaumont says he was not in any hurry to dispose of the brewery.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAfter more than 12 years it represented much more than a collection of tanks and pumps. There are 734 handwritten brew records and recipes, the registered Four Candles\/Fork Handles brand and a lot of local history tied up with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI deliberately didn\u2019t put the brewery up for sale when we closed. I wanted time to decide whether to sell the equipment piecemeal or try to find somebody who might take on the brewery, recipes and Four Candles\/Fork Handles identity as something with a future. I\u2019ve decided to try the latter first.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over its years of brewing, Four Candles produced hundreds of different beers, concentrating particularly on traditional clear ales. The handwritten archive contains 734 individual brew records and recipes, including bitters, porters, single-hop experiments and seasonal beers.<\/p>\n

One of the brewery\u2019s annual traditions was green-hop brewing at the beginning of the September hop harvest. Fresh hops were collected locally and neighbours were encouraged to bring hops from their own gardens to add to the copper.<\/p>\n

Another memorable one-off was RESIST Ukrainian Anti-Imperial Stout, brewed with beetroot following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. Bottles were sold for \u00a320 each in aid of the Red Cross and the project raised thousands of pounds for the charity.<\/p>\n

The sale can potentially include the registered Four Candles \/ Fork Handles trade mark and brand assets, the original Fork Handles display case, the 734-brew archive and the separate registered Planet Thanet trade mark.<\/p>\n

The brewery premises are not for sale. The equipment is currently in Broadstairs and can be dismantled and relocated to a new home anywhere. It could suit an existing pub or micropub wanting to brew its own beer, a new small brewery, or an established brewer looking for a compact small-batch system.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would much rather see it brewing beer again than simply dismantle the whole thing into separate lots,\u201d he said. \u201cIf somebody sees a future for the Four Candles story as well, so much the better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Expressions of interest are now being invited. A detailed illustrated brochure and inventory have been prepared for prospective buyers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
