I knew very little about Vietnam when I arrived, and admittedly, very little about the Vietnam War and the history surrounding it. That\u2019s something I\u2019ve been trying to remedy while I\u2019ve been here \u2014 learning more about the past, and as a U.S. citizen, the role we played in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-my-son-sanctuary-a-unesco-world-heritage-site\">My Son Sanctuary \u2013 A Unesco World Heritage Site<\/h2>\n<p><strong>After buying tickets to enter this Unesco world heritage site \u2014 about 150,000 Vietnamese dong, roughly six U.S. dollars at the time \u2014 <\/strong>we made our way into the park to the shuttle station, where small golf-cart-style vehicles carried visitors closer to the ruins.<\/p>\n<p>Our amazing <em>(and kind of hilarious)<\/em> tour guide, Lin, explained that the shuttle system was added in recent years to manage traffic as visitor numbers increased. She\u2019d first been here more than twenty years ago, and she said that the contrast in tourism then versus now was striking, and that she is worried about the long-term.<\/p>\n<div href=\"https:\/\/tp.media\/r?marker=685656&amp;trs=474915&amp;p=3965&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fgetyourguide.com%2Fhoi-an-l831%2Fhoi-an-my-son-sanctuary-early-morning-visit-with-breakfast-t514776%2F&amp;campaign_id=108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">this specific guided tour<\/a> <\/strong>included free coffee or tea before exploring \u2014\u00a0and lunch later! I loved the little pond filled with frogs belting out a surprisingly loud morning symphony. We chilled there for a bit to listen before heading toward the ruins.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-what-exactly-is-my-son-sanctuary\">But What Exactly Is My Son Sanctuary?<\/h2>\n<p>So My Son Sanctuary was an extremely central part of the Champa Kingdom, a civilization that lived in central Vietnam for centuries. Research shows that beginning around the 4th century, the Cham people built these temples as places of worship, largely dedicated to Hindu deities like Shiva. But you don\u2019t need to know much history to feel that this was once an important place.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>One of the details that stuck with me most was the writing \u2014 ancient Champa script etched directly into stone\u2026and it\u2019s freaking gorgeous! though I understood that the war mostly took place in central Vietnam.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>When our guide pointed out small pockmarks in the walls and asked us what we thought they were, the answer \u2014 bullet holes \u2014 stopped me in my tracks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>She talked about how people around the country are still finding live bombs from the war, even now. That bomb casing is bigger than she is. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Seeing that in person was difficult and eye-opening. According to the Vietnamese government, an estimated 35 million landmines and 300,000 tons of unexploded ordinance <em>still remain<\/em> buried across the countryside decades after the war ended <a href=\"https:\/\/vietnamembassy-usa.org\/relations\/us-veterans-help-land-mine-removal-vietnam\">(source).<\/a> <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Standing there, next to those bombs, that number and the literal impact the war had on this area and it\u2019s people stopped being so abstract.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>We walked past massive indentations in the ground \u2014 twenty or thirty feet across \u2014 <em>bomb craters<\/em> left as they were. <\/strong>Our guide said she hoped they\u2019d never be filled in, so people would remember.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>Some of the bomb craters had been filled with water and turned into lily ponds. There\u2019s something beautifully troubling about that contrast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"kb-gallery-wrap-id-41327_917ab4-ec alignnone Clay formed into precise blocks, coated with natural materials, then lit on fire (almost like a pottery kiln) as entire structures to melt the coating to create strength.<\/p>\n<p>In photos, you can clearly see the difference. The original blocks \u2014 hundreds of years old \u2014 often look cleaner and more intact than the newer reconstructed sections, which show more moss and discoloration. Hundreds of people were arriving and funneling towards the ruins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>At one point as we left, we passed a group of what felt like a hundred school kids \u2014 laughing, yelling, and\u2026well, being kids. Joyful, loud, and completely at odds with the calm we\u2019d just experienced.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Our guide mentioned that afternoon tours are rare \u2014 it\u2019s simply too hot and humid. It\u2019s always worth it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>We drove the hour and fifteen minutes back to Hoi An, and that wrapped up a day that left me with more questions than answers \u2014 the best kind of travel day.<\/p>\n<p>On the ride back, I spoke with a couple of Germans who\u2019d visited the DMZ (the demilitarized zone) and described it as one of the most emotional and enlightening tours they\u2019d ever taking.
