viewBox=&quot;0 0 1280 720&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"styles__Caption-sc-1y47awc-0 cruTJI\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1156401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A home leased in Geelong, Victoria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"Divider__HR-sc-aucjre-0 hrxmbx styles__ImageDivider-sc-1y47awc-1 bUmOgI\"\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The research by furniture retailer Luxo Living using the OECD Affordable Housing Index analyses the proportion of renters and homeowners alongside housing costs, overcrowding, and changes in house prices relative to incomes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Australia recorded a score of 48.1 out of 100, narrowly ahead of the United States on 48, but it was the deterioration in housing affordability that stood out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Australia\u2019s house price-to-income index has climbed to 121 from a baseline of 100 in 2015, meaning property prices have risen almost 22 per cent faster than household incomes over the period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">That was the sixth-largest gap among the 31 countries for which comparable price-to-income data was available.<\/p>\n<div class=\"styles__ExpandedContentWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-0 styles__ExpandedContentImageWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-1 kDuwIj ipNbJY\">\n<div class=\"styles__ImageWrapper-sc-17n6uwl-0 dCoAjl size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156402\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"\"\/><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156402\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1156402\" data-capiid=\"919adc044b6a68191c4f3323bd5f7863\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 1280 720&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"Real Estate Generic New suburbs around Butler and Burns Beach for rent story\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"styles__Caption-sc-1y47awc-0 cruTJI\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1156402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Australia ranks in the top 20 countries when it comes to renting, according to a new survey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"Divider__HR-sc-aucjre-0 hrxmbx styles__ImageDivider-sc-1y47awc-1 bUmOgI\"\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Only Portugal, Canada, the US, the Netherlands and Switzerland recorded a greater deterioration in affordability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">The figures highlight the challenge facing Australians trying to make the transition from renting to owning, with almost one-third of households now renting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Renters account for 31.7 per cent of Australian households, while the homeownership rate sits at 62.7 per cent, according to the analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Australian renters are spending a median 23.1 per cent of their disposable income on housing costs, including rent and utilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">However, Australia performed comparatively well when it came to households experiencing the most severe housing stress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">About 6.5 per cent of households spend more than 40 per cent of their income on housing, compared with 22.7 per cent in Denmark and 20.1 per cent in Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<div class=\"styles__ExpandedContentWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-0 styles__ExpandedContentImageWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-1 kDuwIj ipNbJY\">\n<div class=\"styles__ImageWrapper-sc-17n6uwl-0 dCoAjl size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156403\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"\"\/><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156403\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1156403\" data-capiid=\"2c58818650192a2bd3e39bdb0ea5f0a6\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; viewBox=&quot;0 0 1280 720&quot;%3E%3C\/svg%3E\" srcset=\"\" alt=\"\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div class=\"styles__Caption-sc-1y47awc-0 cruTJI\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1156403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new \u2018forever renter\u2019 index has ranked Australia 15th in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\"Divider__HR-sc-aucjre-0 hrxmbx styles__ImageDivider-sc-1y47awc-1 bUmOgI\"\/><\/div>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Australia\u2019s trans-Tasman neighbour ranked even higher on the \u201cforever renter\u201d scale, with New Zealand coming in 10th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">More than four in 10 New Zealand households rent, while its homeownership rate has fallen to 57.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Colombia topped the global index with a score of 71, followed by Denmark on 67 and Chile on 64.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">Luxo Living chief executive Winston Tu said the growth of long-term renting was also changing the way people approached their homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201c\u2018Forever renters\u2019 are no longer a niche group, they\u2019re shaping how an entire generation lives, decorates and invests in their homes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cAs renting becomes the default rather than a stepping stone, furniture suppliers like us have had to evolve.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"styles__ExpandedContentWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-0 styles__ExpandedContentImageWrapper-sc-1ru2hv7-1 kDuwIj ipNbJY\">\n<div class=\"styles__ImageWrapper-sc-17n6uwl-0 dCoAjl size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156405\"><picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"\"\/><img class=\"styles__StyledImage-sc-17n6uwl-1 hlcJVa size-full wp-post- wp-image-1156405\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1156405\" data-capiid=\"9b0d16478f36187a5b48a5caf7176621\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg&quot; Workers deserve not only secure jobs, but also secure housing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__Typography-sc-1103tao-0 bjGYxJ StyledP-sc-cebixd-0 bzEerj\">\u201cMoving homes costs money, disrupts lives, and too often pushes workers further away from their jobs.
