So this Thailand travel guide isn\u2019t a rewrite of a booking site\u2019s landing page. It\u2019s the honest version: where I\u2019ve actually been and what it was like, plus a straight admission of the big pieces of the country I haven\u2019t reached yet. Where I\u2019m guessing, I\u2019ll say so.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Thailand_I_Actually_Know\"\/>The Thailand I Actually Know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>My Thailand is the south and the capital. The Andaman coast \u2014 Phuket and Krabi \u2014 and Bangkok are where I\u2019ve spent my days, and that\u2019s what most of this guide is built on. I haven\u2019t done the north (Chiang Mai, Pai, the hill country) or the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao), and I\u2019m not going to pretend otherwise further down. What I can give you first-hand is a coast-and-city Thailand, which happens to be exactly the trip a lot of first-timers actually take.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bangkok_Louder_and_Better_Than_Its_Reputation\"\/>Bangkok: Louder and Better Than Its Reputation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Bangkok overwhelms people, and I think that\u2019s mostly because they only see the tourist-trap version of it. The city rewarded me most when I got off the obvious track \u2014 I wrote about that in <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/bangkok-beyond-the-temples\/\">Bangkok beyond the temples<\/a>, which is the parks, the hidden bars, and the grittier nights that don\u2019t make the highlight reels. If you want the strange and the sacred, the <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/bangkok-amulet-market-discover-thailands-mystical-riverside-treasure\/\">Bangkok Amulet Market<\/a> down by the river is one of the more genuinely unusual places I\u2019ve wandered into. And for the pure visual side of the city, I went looking for beauty in the concrete on an <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/bangkok-urban-exploration-urban-exploration-elevated-walkways-photography\/\">urban exploration walk<\/a> along the elevated walkways.<\/p>\n<p>If you time your trip around mid-April, you\u2019ll hit Songkran, and nothing prepares you for it. My <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/songkran-festival-bangkok-my-unexpected-water-fight-adventure-in-thailand\/\">Songkran water fight in Bangkok<\/a> was one of the best days I\u2019ve had anywhere. I later ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/songkran-bangkok-vs-siem-reap\/\">comparing Songkran in Bangkok against Siem Reap<\/a> \u2014 they\u2019re two very different beasts, and if you\u2019re deciding where to be for it, that one\u2019s worth a read.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Phuket_More_Than_the_Party_Its_Sold_As\"\/>Phuket: More Than the Party It\u2019s Sold As<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Phuket gets written off as a package-holiday island, and that\u2019s a shame, because there\u2019s a lot more there if you look. The single wildest night I had in Thailand was the <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/phuket-vegetarian-festival\/\">Phuket Vegetarian Festival<\/a> \u2014 fireworks filling the entire street, smoke everywhere, an intensity of faith and noise I\u2019ve never seen anywhere else. If your trip lines up with it (late September into October), do not miss it.<\/p>\n<p>The quieter side surprised me more, though. <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/old-town-phuket-a-serene-escape-and-unexpected-cultural-immersion\/\">Old Town Phuket<\/a> with its Sino-Portuguese shophouses was an unexpected pocket of calm and culture, and my <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/phuket-beaches-slow-days\/\">slow days on Phuket\u2019s beaches<\/a> \u2014 sunsets, coral, quiet walks \u2014 were the version of the island nobody sells you. Then there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/patong-thailand-a-vibrant-beach-town-with-a-mixed-bag-of-experiences\/\">Patong<\/a>, which is the loud, neon, mixed-bag Phuket everyone pictures. I\u2019ll be honest about it: it\u2019s a lot, and whether you love it or flee it depends entirely on what you came for.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Krabi_and_Ao_Nang_My_Favourite_Corner\"\/>Krabi and Ao Nang: My Favourite Corner<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>If I had to send someone to one part of the Thai south, it might be here. <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/ao-nang-thailand\/\">Ao Nang<\/a> is a coastal base of beaches and limestone cliffs (and, memorably, tiny crab artists on the sand), and <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/krabi-travel-experiences\/\">Krabi<\/a> more broadly has a slower, softer charm than Phuket. The one that stayed with me was the climb up to <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/travel\/wat-tham-suea\/\">Wat Tham Suea, the Tiger Cave Temple<\/a> \u2014 over a thousand steps, brutal in the heat, and a view at the top that earns every one of them. That\u2019s the Thailand day I\u2019d put on a postcard.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Parts_I_Havent_Reached_Yet\"\/>The Parts I Haven\u2019t Reached Yet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the honest gap. I haven\u2019t been to northern Thailand \u2014 Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai \u2014 which travellers I trust rave about for the mountains, the food, and a completely different, cooler pace than the south. I also haven\u2019t done the Gulf islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao) or the old capitals at Ayutthaya and Sukhothai. If you\u2019re planning around those, I\u2019d point you to writers who\u2019ve actually lived them rather than have me guess. When I get there, I\u2019ll write it up the same way I\u2019ve written everything above \u2014 from the ground, not from a brochure.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Planning\"\/>Practical Planning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>Two things worth sorting before you go. First, timing: Thailand\u2019s seasons make or break a trip, and I broke down the shoulder-season reality in <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/destinations\/thailand-in-october-islands-weather-guide\/\">Thailand in October<\/a> \u2014 the tail of the monsoon, when the crowds thin and the deals appear but the weather\u2019s a gamble. Second, packing: the heat and humidity are no joke, and my <a href=\"https:\/\/roamingsparrow.com\/how-to\/southeast-asia-packing-guide\/\">Southeast Asia packing guide<\/a> covers what actually earns its place in the bag. For official visa and entry specifics, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourismthailand.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tourism Authority of Thailand<\/a> is the source to check close to your dates rather than trusting a page written months ahead.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Id_Use_This_Guide\"\/>How I\u2019d Use This Guide<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"\/><\/h2>\n<p>If this is your first Thailand trip and you want the version I can vouch for, string together Bangkok, a few days in Phuket, and the Krabi\/Ao Nang coast \u2014 that\u2019s a genuinely great two weeks and every link above feeds into it. Save the north and the Gulf islands for a second trip, and go read someone who\u2019s been.
