It\u2019s a great feeling, and we\u2019re going to elect Lula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her husband, Valmir Maia, held back tears as he stood next to her. \u201cIt\u2019s season ahead of October\u2019s high-stakes presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lula\u2019s campaign chose this particular stadium to start the run for his fourth and final term as president \u2014 the same place where he got his start as a powerful figure on a national stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1979, when Lula was a young leader at the ABC metalworkers\u2019 union held an iconic strike and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DLErUv9LqtA\">rally at the same stadium<\/a>. The workers won. It marked the beginning of the end of the country\u2019s military dictatorship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valmir Maia was there then and now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted what we got,\u201d he said. \u201cTo transform Brazil into a democratic country. That was our struggle. World<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the stadium on Sunday, President Lula strode onto a long stage wearing a Panama hat and a white shirt. From the bleachers, he seemed to float above the sea of supporters in red, the color of Lula\u2019s Workers\u2019 Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lula\u2019s top campaign promise has always been about battling hunger. From the beginning of his first presidential term in 2003, he called his program <em>Fome Zero<\/em> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nacla.org\/after-lula-brazilian-workers-party-transition\/\">Zero Hunger<\/a>. Over the years, he\u2019s lifted millions from poverty and increased access to education, health and infrastructure, particularly in impoverished northeastern Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lula told the crowd that much work remained. They had to think about the future. He said they had to invest even more in education. That he wanted to continue to develop jobs and industry for Brazil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, 300 miles to the east, Lula\u2019s challenger Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ethupghmTdQ\">launched his campaign<\/a> on Copacabana beach, in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis election is about which path we want to choose for our Brazil,\u201d Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro told his supporters. \u201cThe path of prosperity that I will offer to the Brazilian people, or the path of darkness with crime, insecurity and the cost of living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro is a senator and the 45-year-old son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who led the country from 2018 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The older Bolsonaro is now under house arrest. He was jailed last year after being <a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/bolsonaros-conviction-for-coup-plot-is-a-blow-to-the-global-far-right\/\">convicted of attempting to carry out a coup<\/a> to overturn his 2022 electoral loss to Lula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He tapped his son to lead the charge to return the family to the presidency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His supporters say Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro can do the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday afternoon, Daniel Martins was one of dozens of Bolsonaro class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFl\u00e1vio represents a large sector of society that defends family, traditional and Christian values,\u201d Martins said. \u201cFl\u00e1vio carries the name of the Bolsonaro family and the legacy of many people who do not feel represented by the current government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lula currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/lula-holds-tight-lead-over-senator-bolsonaro-ahead-brazil-election-poll-shows-2026-08-17\/\">leads the polls<\/a>. But Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro is not far behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he\u2019s betting that his ties to US President Donald Trump will give him a boost at the polls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump is a staunch ally of the Bolsonaro family. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/therealnews.com\/thousands-protest-donald-trump-tariffs-interference-brazil-courts\">he imposed 50% tariffs on Brazil,<\/a> partly because of Brazil\u2019s trial against Jair Bolsonaro. He spoke to the press about it that same month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re treating President Bolsonaro very unfairly,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe\u2019s a good man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.folha.uol.com.br\/internacional\/en\/world\/2026\/05\/flavio-bolsonaro-meets-trump-and-says-he-asked-to-classify-pcc-and-cv-as-terrorist-groups.shtml\">met with Trump<\/a> at the White House in May. Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/us-imposes-25-tariff-some-goods-brazil-2026-07-16\/\">Trump imposed new 25% tariffs<\/a> on Brazil. Then, two weeks ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/aug\/04\/us-revokes-brazil-ambassador-visa\">he revoked the Brazilian ambassador\u2019s US visa<\/a> after Brazil denied visas to two US State Department officials who planned to travel to Brazil to meet former President Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lula has accused Trump of trying to influence the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/people\/alexander-main\/\">Alexander Main<\/a> is the director of international policy at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/\">Center for Economic Policy and Research<\/a> in Washington. He said this election is important not just for Brazil, but for the entire region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBrazil is the country with the largest economy, the biggest population in Latin America,\u201d Main said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s also one of the few countries that is still holding out against US pressure to align with the Trump administration\u2019s agenda in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the campaign, Brazilian sociologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escavador.com\/sobre\/2846455\/marcelo-kunrath-silva\">Marcelo Kunrath<\/a> said he expects it to be \u201cvery intense and probably with some level of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tens of thousands of supporters of President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva packed into May 1 Stadium this past Sunday in the president\u2019s hometown of S\u00e3o Bernardo do Campo.
