How do you get between them? Do you book everything ahead or play it by ear? I remember staring at a map of the Cyclades thinking I’d need a degree in ferry logistics just to cover a bunch of islands that weren’t Mykonos or Santorini.

If you’re currently on a cruise, read this other article: https://violetamatei.com/santorini-shore-excursions/. You’ll learn how to best spend your time in Santorini during your cruise stop.

Even the Saronic Islands, the archipelago that’s so close to Athens, poses a risk when it comes to finding the right ferry connections top hop from one island to the next. The last thing you want is to find yourself stranded on Hydra, for instance, simply because you can’t find a connection to take you to Aegina, where you already have your accommodation booked.

My Saronic Gulf hopping adventure was about to take a bad turn when I added Methana to the mix. I was on Agistri, ready to board for Methana, when I realized I won’t be able to return on time to catch the ferry to Aegina, where I needed to arrive that evening.

More waves, more pebbles, lower shooting angle

The good news is that once you understand how the pieces fit together — routes, ferries, timing — it’s not complicated at all. I’m sharing everything I wish I’d known before my first trip, so you can skip the confusion and get straight to the good part.

Why Plan Ahead?

Greek ferries don’t run on a fixed year-round schedule. Routes that run daily in July might run twice a week in May, and some island connections disappear completely outside peak season.

Accommodation books up fast too, especially on the popular islands. Rooms in Santorini or Mykonos in July or August can be gone months in advance, and the good ones go first everywhere else too.

Budget-wise, island hopping can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. A deck ticket on a conventional ferry might cost you $50, while a high-speed ferry or a private transfer can run several times that. Knowing your options upfront helps you avoid overpaying without realizing it.

Is There a Greek Islands Ferry Pass?

Unfortunately, there’s no ferry pass that guarantees you a seat on any ferry you want.

There are several Eurail ferry pass options you can check out here. They are available to non-EU residents only and they still require making a reservation for your desired routes.

EU residents can choose one of the Interrail passes, here.

Taking into consideration the current ferry ticket fares, such passes are a great way to save money on your commutes between islands.

Step 1: Choose Your Home Base Region

Greece has thousands of islands, but most travelers stick to a few clusters, and picking the right one matters more than picking the “best” individual islands.

The Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Milos): the classic whitewashed-village, blue-domed-church image of Greece. Well connected by ferry, great for first-timers.

The Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, Lemnos, Symi, Kastellorizo): closer to Turkey, mixes beach time with medieval old towns and a different pace.

The Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos): greener, more laid-back, better if you want fewer crowds and more nature.

The Saronic Gulf (Hydra, Aegina, Poros, Agistri): closest to Athens, perfect if you only have a few extra days tacked onto a mainland trip.

Trying to combine islands from different clusters usually means backtracking through Athens, which eats up days you’d rather spend on a beach. Pick one region and go deep instead.

One viable workaround is to fly instead of using ferries or speed boats. The downside of flying, though, is that there aren’t direct connections between islands. All flights go through Athens, thus being both time-consuming and expensive.

Step 2: Decide How Many Islands (and How Long)

The biggest planning mistake is trying to see too many islands in too little time.

My rule of thumb: at least 2-3 nights per island. Anything less and you spend your whole visit checking in, checking out, and running for ferries instead of actually enjoying the place.

Some pacing options to steal:

7 days, 3 islands — comfortable, low-stress, still leaves room for lazy beach afternoons

10 days, 4 islands — the sweet spot for seeing real variety without feeling rushed

14 days, 5-6 islands — doable if you don’t mind a fuller itinerary, best for a second or third trip to Greece

Step 3: All the Ways to Get Between Islands

Option 1: Ferry (The Classic Choice)

How it works: You book tickets (online or at the port) for either a conventional ferry or a high-speed catamaran.

Conventional ferries are slower but cheaper and more scenic; high-speed ferries cut travel time roughly in half.

On shorter distances I prefer conventional ferries, because I love the feeling of standing on the deck and enjoying the blue waters and the wind.

PROS:

Affordable — often $40-50 per route depending on distance and speed

Frequent in high season — multiple daily departures on popular routes

Scenic — you get to watch the islands appear on the horizon

Flexible — easy to change plans if you book close to travel dates in shoulder season

The real island-hopping experience — this is how you get to enjoy the beauty of the blue waters

CONS:

Schedules shrink outside of June-September

High-speed ferries get canceled in strong wind (the meltemi)

Conventional ferries can take a long time on longer routes

Popular routes sell out in August — you need to book ahead

Port transfers add extra time on both ends

Best for: Almost everyone. Staying in the main town or a quieter village usually means better restaurants, views, and atmosphere, but sometimes a taxi ride from the port.

If you’re island hopping with a tight schedule, prioritize proximity to the port. If you’re spending several nights, it’s worth the short transfer to stay somewhere with more character.

Sample Itinerary: 10 Days, 4 Islands

Days 1-2: Athens — arrive, adjust to the time zone, see the Acropolis before heading to the islands.

Days 3-4: Mykonos — beach time, Mykonos Town’s winding streets, sunset in Little Venice.

Days 5-7: Naxos — quieter than Mykonos, great beaches, a good base for a day trip to a nearby village.

Days 8-10: Santorini — caldera views, Oia sunset, save this for last since it’s the most photographed for a reason.

Fly back to Athens to catch your flight back home

My Tips for Choosing

– If it’s your first time: stick to the Cyclades and take ferries — it’s the classic, well-connected combo.
– If you’re short on time: fly between distant islands instead of taking a long ferry.
– If you hate planning: book an organized island-hopping tour and let someone else handle it.
– If you’re celebrating something special: consider a private boat for at least one day of your trip.
– If you’re traveling in shoulder season (May, June, September): you’ll get better weather-to-crowd ratio, but double-check ferry schedules since they’re reduced.

Important Things to Remember

Pack light. Cobblestone streets and no elevators in most guesthouses make dragging a big suitcase around miserable.

Watch the weather. The meltemi wind can cancel high-speed ferries for a day or more in July and August — build in buffer time, especially before flights home.

Bring cash. Smaller islands and family-run tavernas don’t always take cards.

Book ferries and key accommodations ahead in peak season — winging it works better in shoulder season, not in August.

The best months to go are May, June, and September: warm enough to swim, but without the peak-summer crowds and prices.

Island hopping in Greece really is easier than it looks once you break it into pieces: pick a region, decide your pace, choose how you’ll get around, and book ahead where it matters. After that, it’s just sunsets and ferry rides.

Main Topics of How Do I Plan a Greece Island Hopping Trip Greece island hopping sounds like a dream until you actually sit down to plan it.
