It turns out that when it’s hot, the last thing I want to do is read. Or do anything for that matter except sit in front of the fan. I am not a summer person! But I was working a lot in July so I could read books on my Kindle and listen to audiobooks on my commute. The group challenge on Goodreads continues but it meant I got to a couple of books that had been on my TBR for absolutely ages.

  1. Skill Thief (Soul Canvas #1)

  2. The Bystander (The Game at Carousel #1)

  3. The Honjin Murders (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi #1)

  4. The Invitation (The Game at Carousel #2)

  5. The Cautious Traveller’s Guide to The Wastelands

  6. Murder on the Rocks (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #13)

  7. Human Insanity (An Outcast In Another World #1)

  8. Dungeon Lord (The Wraith’s Haunt #1)

  9. Before I Let Go

  10. Put Your Records On

  11. The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 1 (The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion #1)

  12. The Care and Feeding of Meddling Himbos: A Spicy MMF Why Choose Romantic Comedy (The Aimee Position #3)

  13. Art Cure: The Science of How the Arts Transform Our Health

  14. Winter’s Orbit (The Resolution Universe #1)

  15. Lucky Day

  16. The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 2 (The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion #2)

  17. The Tainted Cup (Shadow of the Leviathan #1)

  18. The Gate (Sanshirō #3)

  19. The Little Sparrow Murders (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi #6)

  20. The Missing of Clairdelune (The Mirror Visitor #2)

  21. Don’t Let It Break You, Honey: A Memoir about Saving Yourself

  22. Midnight at Malabar House (The Malabar House Series #1)

  23. Death on Gokumon Island (Detective Kosuke Kindaichi #2)

  24. Mob Psycho 100 Vol 1 (Mob Psycho 100 #1)

  25. Mob Psycho 100 Vol 2 (Mob Psycho 100 #2)

I had a great reading month for books I enjoyed – I got to several books that I’ve been meaning to read for a while (The Tainted Cup, Lucky Day, The Missing of Clairdelune) but a book I have a feeling I’m going to reread in the future is The Winter’s Orbit. I was so worried about reading it, sure it wouldn’t live up to the hype, but I had a great time and I would love to reread it with the knowledge of how it ended. So glad I got it in a book box!

Despite having a great reading month, this wasn’t a hard category to pick. I was really annoyed at how the female characters were written in Death on Gokumon Island, I found The Care and Feeding of Meddling Himbos a little dull at times, but the one book that had a great premise and yet was executed poorly (and had a very disturbing ending which was supposed to be goood?) was The Cautious Graveller’s Guide to the Wastelands.

So I made more progress on my 2026 Goals than I thought, partly on accident. I read two books from my 2026 TBR, one ARC and one book from my Women’s Prize for Non-Fiction Longlist. Apart from the ARC (which was incredibly late anyway), I really enjoyed all of these books! I am 53% of the way through the PopSugar challenge, and 24% of the way through the Read Harder challenge. And eight of the books this month I already owned (which doesn’t make up for the 15 books I bought, even if about half of them were free Kindle books). It’s going well!

    How did your July go?
