When I saw the trailer for The End Of Oak Street<\/a>, something stood out to me. J.J. Abrams directed the movie. He was the producer of Lost<\/a>, Super 8<\/a>, and other films and TV series. More importantly, he produced Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane<\/a>, and The Cloverfield Paradox<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Something about this film\u2019s trailer reminded me of the Cloverfield films. It felt as if this film could be connected to those films. While no one has said it outright, fan theories are flying around that this is a Cloverfield film. Regardless, The End Of Oak Street was a fun thrill ride.<\/p>\n

What is The End Of Oak Street? A family is struggling to stay together. Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway) has been unhappy in her marriage to Greg (Ewan McGregor). She\u2019s an aspiring author who\u2019s been weaving her life into her forthcoming book. Then there\u2019s the coming of age of their children, Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery).<\/p>\n

\"A<\/a><\/p>\n

Their challenges are amplified when their block is whisked away to the prehistoric past. They wake up to find dinosaurs roaming the streets and skies. They attempt to drive, only to find jungles and an extreme drop-off.<\/p>\n

Soon, they can tell they\u2019re not in Michigan anymore\u2026 They\u2019re somewhere dangerous. And they\u2019ve all got to grow up and put their differences aside.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take a look at how this sci-fi\/thriller can help us become better leaders.<\/p>\n

1. Greg Platt:<\/h3>\n
\n

Why\u2019m I doing this again?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Platts were attending a neighborhood block party. Remember those? They were extremely common in the 1980s.<\/p>\n

Greg was participating in a sack race. He wonders out loud why he\u2019s doing this again\u2026<\/p>\n

Denise gives him a simple reason: Fatherly duty.<\/p>\n

Leaders should regularly ask themselves why they\u2019re doing what they\u2019re doing. They put themselves in the crosshairs of their employees, especially when there are issues.<\/p>\n

More importantly, you have to have a reason for what you\u2019re doing. Greg\u2019s was fatherly duties.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your reason for continuing to lead?<\/p>\n

2. Focusing on what others are doing will cause you to mess up:<\/h3>\n

There was a balloon toss at the block party. Audrey is participating in it with her friends.<\/p>\n

At one point, she\u2019s talking to one of her friends. That friend\u2019s boyfriend arrives. Audrey\u2019s focus switches to the couple. And that\u2019s where she messes up.<\/p>\n

Splat!<\/p>\n

Audrey is hit in the face with a balloon. She\u2019s out of the game.<\/p>\n

Be careful. We can get distracted by what others are doing.<\/p>\n

You may see:<\/p>\n

Our focus has to be on the people we lead, our organization, and what we can do. Make sure you\u2019re not distracted by others and what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n

3. Things can appear normal when they\u2019re not:<\/h3>\n

The family experiences something strange one night. There\u2019s a loud noise. There are abnormal lights.<\/p>\n

They wake up the next morning, and everything looks normal. Their neighbors are still there. The street still looks the same.<\/p>\n

Except everything wasn\u2019t normal.<\/p>\n

Their block had been moved back in time. No one noticed for a while.<\/p>\n

Your organization is going to change. Things are going to appear normal. Then you\u2019ll realize just how messed up things have become.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have to watch for the small changes<\/a> no one notices. They\u2019re the sign that things aren\u2019t normal.<\/p>\n

4. Your questions can scare the people you lead:<\/h3>\n

The power goes out in the Platt household. Everyone noticed this. That\u2019s when Audrey started to ask questions.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t offensive or dangerous questions. However, the questions could scare Brian.<\/p>\n

Denise noted this. She asked Audrey to stop asking the questions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Your questions can begin to scare those you lead. It\u2019s not because the questions are scary or dangerous or harmful.<\/p>\n

People get scared when you ask questions. Especially when there are no clear-cut answers.<\/p>\n

Know this. Ask questions anyway.<\/p>\n

5. Brian Platt:<\/h3>\n
\n

What happened to us?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Greg gets his family into their car. They begin to drive around Oak Street. That\u2019s when they realize something has happened.<\/p>\n

The roads are overgrown. Houses and the road were cut off. Things were weird.<\/p>\n

Asking what happened to us is a great question for leaders to use. You share that you notice something has changed. There\u2019s a good chance that something isn\u2019t good. But you want to figure out what changed and what can be done about it.<\/p>\n

When was the last time<\/a> you asked, \u201cWhat happened to our organization?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s changed?\u201d \u201cHow can we make it better?<\/p>\n

Recognize that things change. Ask the right questions. Make things better.<\/p>\n

6. Leaders don\u2019t want to make their people worry:<\/h3>\n

Denise was made at Greg for delivering pizzas. She felt it was beneath them. But she didn\u2019t know something\u2026<\/p>\n

Greg had lost his job. He was delivering pizzas to help pay the bills.<\/p>\n

The situation all came to light. Denise was upset. Then she wondered why Greg hadn\u2019t told her.<\/p>\n

Greg didn\u2019t want Denise or his kids to worry.<\/p>\n

Situations don\u2019t get better by hiding the truth. I\u2019ve seen it happen in organization after organization.<\/p>\n

Leadership knows there\u2019s a problem. They\u2019re trying to work on a solution. Yet they haven\u2019t told their teams what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n

Your team knows something is amiss before you tell them. I know you don\u2019t want to worry your team members; however, you need to share with them what\u2019s happening. They need to be in the know.<\/p>\n

7. Great leaders hunt down their lost employees:<\/h3>\n

The Platts had a dog, Starbuck. Ever since the move, Starbuck had been lost. Then it happened\u2026<\/p>\n

Brian is in his room. He hears Starbuck outside. He\u00a0sees<\/strong> Starbuck.<\/p>\n

Boom!<\/p>\n

Brian grabs his bow and arrow. He\u2019s out of the house. He\u2019s tracking down his lost dog.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll hear a lot of leaders go on and on about how you have to let employees, especially underperforming employees, go. What if that wasn\u2019t the case?<\/p>\n

I believe you can\u00a0hunt down<\/em> your wayward employees. You can show them that they matter to you and the organization.<\/p>\n

Be willing to hunt down employees. Help them to see they can turn around and come back.<\/p>\n

8. The problems around you may be bigger than you realize:<\/h3>\n

Audrey soon realizes her brother has left the house. Soon, she\u2019s out the door looking for Brian.<\/p>\n

We see Audrey wandering the neighborhood. She\u2019s carrying a knife. But what\u2019s out there wouldn\u2019t be taken down by a little knife.<\/p>\n

The camera pans out. We see gigantic dinosaur prints. Yup, the problem is bigger than Audrey realizes.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re going to wind up in a similar situation. You\u2019re going to notice a problem and act. Then, you\u2019re going to realize the problem is much larger than you thought.<\/p>\n

Be ready to deal with the big problems. You can tackle them; you just might need bigger tools.<\/p>\n

9. There is tragedy in leadership:<\/h3>\n

A T-Rex had chased Denise down. She\u2019s about to be eaten when Greg makes his move. He uses a sledgehammer to wallop the T-Rex in the head. It\u2019s down for the count.<\/p>\n

Or is it?<\/p>\n

The T-Rex is soon back up. It\u2019s after Greg. The gigantic dinosaur bends over and devours Greg.<\/p>\n

The bigger tragedy? It was in front of his family and a straggler, Jeannette Christiansen (Jordan Alexa Davis), whom they\u2019d picked up.<\/p>\n

Hopefully this kind of tragedy never happens in your leadership. Still, there will be tragedy.<\/p>\n
