This guide covers the buyer-intent modifiers that signal a ready buyer, the difficulty thresholds a new site can realistically beat, and the free tools I use to find keywords that earn commissions instead of empty traffic.

Most affiliate posts never earn a dime, and the reason usually traces back to a bad keyword. Someone writes 2,000 words targeting “how does affiliate marketing work,” ranks on page one, pulls in a few hundred visitors a month, and sells nothing. The traffic showed up. The buyers stayed home.

I’ve run affiliate programs and content for more than 20 years, and the same pattern holds every time. The affiliates who make real money aren’t chasing the biggest search numbers. They’re finding smaller keywords where the person searching already has a credit card out. Pick phrases with buying intent, confirm you can rank for them, and write the post that answers the question better than whatever ranks now. That’s the whole job.

Why affiliate keyword research is different from regular blogging

A regular blogger wants traffic. An affiliate wants buyers. Those are two different keyword lists, and confusing them is the most expensive mistake I see.

Say you’re in the home office niche. “Standing desk benefits” gets maybe 8,000 searches a month. Feels great. But the person typing that phrase is curious, not ready to buy. They read your post, learn that standing burns a few more calories, and leave. Now compare “best standing desk under $300.” Lower volume, maybe 900 searches a month. But that searcher has a budget, a use case, and a decision to make this week. One of those keywords pays your rent. The other pads your analytics.

This is why picking the right niche matters so much before you ever open a keyword tool. A niche with expensive products, recurring commissions, or hungry buyers gives you keywords worth ranking for. A niche full of free-tool seekers gives you traffic and nothing else. If you’re still deciding where to plant your flag, start with the best niches for affiliate marketing and work backward from what people in that space buy.

Your blog can rank for informational keywords too. They build authority and feed your email list. But your money keywords, the ones you research first and prioritize hardest, are the ones tied to a purchase. I break down how the whole system fits together in turning your blog into an affiliate marketing machine.

Start with buyer-intent keywords

Buyer-intent keywords contain a word that tells you the searcher is comparing, evaluating, or about to buy. Learn the modifiers and you can spot a money keyword in half a second.

The ones that convert for affiliates:

Best: “best email marketing software for creators.” The searcher wants a recommendation. That’s you.

Review: “ConvertKit review.” They’ve heard of it and want a verdict before buying.

Vs: “ConvertKit vs Mailchimp.” They’re down to two options and looking for a tiebreaker.

Alternative: “Mailchimp alternatives.” They’re unhappy with what they have and shopping for a switch.

For : “CRM for real estate agents.” Specific need, specific buyer.

Discount, coupon, pricing: “Semrush pricing.” Someone checking the price is close to pulling the trigger.

Rank a post for any of those and you’re catching people at the moment they decide. Compare that to “what is email marketing,” where the reader is three months and a hundred decisions away from spending money. Same niche, wildly different value.

The “review” and “best” formats do the heaviest lifting for most affiliates. A single review post can earn for years if you target the right product and write it well.

Review keywords convert because the reader has already decided they want the category and just needs a nudge on which product. If that’s the format you’ll write most, study the structure first in How to Write an Affiliate Product Review Post That Ranks and Converts, which walks through the exact layout that earns commissions instead of just clicks.

Free keyword research tools worth your time

You do not need a $129-a-month subscription to do this well. I ran keyword research for years using tools that cost nothing. Here’s the free stack.

Google autocomplete. Type your seed phrase into the Google search bar and watch the suggestions drop down. Those are real searches people run, ranked by popularity. Type “best budget,” pause, and see what Google fills in. Free, instant, and pulled straight from actual search behavior.

People Also Ask. Run any search and you’ll see a box of related questions. Click one and it expands into more. These are gold for affiliate content because they’re the exact questions a buyer asks before purchasing. Answer them inside your post and you feed both Google and the reader.

Keyword Surfer. A free Chrome extension that shows estimated monthly search volume right inside Google’s results page. No dashboard, no login. You search, and the numbers appear next to each term. It’s rough, but rough is fine when you’re starting.

AnswerThePublic. Enter a seed keyword and it maps out the questions, comparisons, and prepositions people search around it. The free version limits your daily searches, but a few queries pull dozens of content ideas.

Google Search Console. Once your site has any traffic, this becomes your best tool, and it’s free. It shows the exact queries already sending you clicks and impressions. I’ve found some of my best keywords by spotting terms where I ranked on page two and just needed a better post to climb.

Two places most affiliates forget to look: Reddit and Pinterest. Reddit threads show you the raw language buyers use and the questions they argue about, which beats any tool for finding angles. I covered how to mine it in using Reddit for affiliate marketing. Pinterest works as a visual search engine, so its own autocomplete surfaces buyer phrases you won’t find on Google. More on that in affiliate marketing on Pinterest.

Finding the keyword is step one. Writing the post fast enough to publish weekly is the part that stalls most people. Review Post Pro is trained on 300-plus top-ranked review posts and drafts an SEO-structured review in a fraction of the time, so you can turn a keyword list into published posts without burning your whole weekend.

How to tell if you can rank for a keyword

A perfect buyer-intent keyword is worthless if you can’t crack page one. On a brand-new site, you’re not outranking Forbes or Wirecutter for “best laptop.” So before you commit to a keyword, check whether you have a real shot.

Free tools like Keyword Surfer and Ubersuggest give a difficulty score from 0 to 100. For a site under six months old with few backlinks, target keywords with difficulty under 20. Once you’ve earned some authority and a handful of links, push into the 20-to-35 range. Above 40, wait until you’ve got the domain strength to compete.

Volume matters less than you’d think. A keyword with 500 to 2,500 monthly searches and low difficulty will make you more money than a 20,000-search term you rank number 47 for. Number 47 gets zero clicks. Ranking third for a smaller term beats ranking nowhere for a big one.

Do the manual check too. Google your target keyword and look at page one. If you see forum threads, thin articles, or pages that don’t fully answer the question, that’s an opening. If the whole page is major brands with deep, updated content, move on. Longer phrases give you the best odds. “Best running shoes” is a war. “Best running shoes for flat feet and knee pain” is a keyword a new site can win, and the person searching it knows exactly what they want.

Ranking is only half the battle. Google reshuffles results a few times a year, and thin affiliate posts get hit hardest. Build pages that hold up by covering the topic completely, which I get into in protecting your affiliate content from Google core updates.

How to match keywords to where the buyer is

Every keyword carries an intent, and matching your content to that intent is what turns a ranking into a sale. Get this wrong and you’ll write a great post that converts at zero percent.

Three intent levels matter for affiliates:

Informational. “How to start a podcast.” The reader wants to learn. These build your list and your authority, but they rarely sell directly. Use them to capture email addresses, then sell later.

Commercial investigation. “Best podcast microphone” or “Rode vs Shure.” The reader is deciding between options. This is your sweet spot. They want a recommendation, and your affiliate link is the answer.

Transactional. “Buy Rode PodMic” or “Rode PodMic discount.” The reader is ready to purchase right now. Lower volume, but the highest conversion rate you’ll ever see.

Map each keyword to its level and give it the right content. An informational keyword gets a thorough guide with a soft opt-in. A commercial keyword gets a comparison or a “best of” roundup with clear recommendations. The format has to fit the search, which is why I laid out what types of content work best for affiliate marketing by intent. If your buyers watch before they buy, some of those commercial keywords deserve a video too, and I cover that in using YouTube for affiliate marketing.

Commercial-intent keywords almost always call for a review or comparison post, and getting that post to rank takes a specific on-page setup. My free Affiliate Review Post Guide shows how to optimize product reviews for search so they rank on Google and convert readers into buyers, and I update it every six months.

How to turn your keyword list into a content plan

A spreadsheet of 200 keywords isn’t a plan. Grouping them into clusters is. Clustering tells Google you own a topic, and it gives you a natural internal linking structure that lifts every post in the group.

Pick one product category or subtopic. Put your main commercial keyword at the center, something like “best email marketing software.” Then gather every related keyword around it: the reviews of individual tools, the “vs” comparisons, the “for ” variations, and the informational questions buyers ask. That cluster becomes one pillar post plus a handful of supporting posts, all linking to each other.

Publish the supporting posts, link them to the pillar, and link the pillar back out. One primary keyword per post, no cannibalizing yourself by targeting the same phrase twice. This structure is exactly how a well-built resources page becomes a passive commission machine, sitting at the hub of a cluster and catching buyers from every direction.

A single well-placed page can carry a whole cluster. My free report The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Resources Page shows how I earn over $10,000 a month in passive affiliate income from one page, including the five things that make it convert.

Keyword research mistakes that cost affiliates months

I’ve watched people grind for six months and quit, convinced affiliate marketing doesn’t work, when the real problem was their keyword choices from day one. A few mistakes cause most of the wasted effort.

Chasing volume over intent. The biggest one. A 15,000-search informational keyword feels like a win until you realize nobody buys. Take the 800-search commercial keyword instead.

Targeting head terms too early. “Best credit card” on a two-month-old site is a fantasy. You’ll pour a week into a post that never sees page three.

Ignoring the SERP. People pick a keyword from a tool without ever Googling it to see who ranks. Then they’re shocked when four national brands own the page. Look before you write.

Quitting before Google catches up. New posts take time to rank, sometimes three to six months. Affiliates who bail at month two never see the traffic that was two weeks away. If your expectations are off, reset them with how long affiliate marketing takes so you don’t kill a post right before it climbs.

Your next three steps

Keyword research for affiliate content comes down to a short loop you can run this week. First, list every product you’d promote and add the modifiers to each one: best, review, vs, alternative, and the use cases your buyers care about. That single exercise gives most people 50 money keywords in an afternoon.

Second, run each keyword through a free difficulty check and a manual Google search. Keep the ones under 20 difficulty where page one looks beatable. Cross off the rest for now.

Third, cluster what’s left, pick the highest-intent keyword in your strongest cluster, and write that post first. Then repeat. Do this consistently and you’ll build a library of pages that catch buyers on repeat.

If you’re early and want the fastest path from zero to your first commission, my free Affiliate Marketing QuickStart Guide lays out the step-by-step method plus copy-and-paste templates, so you’re not guessing while you build your keyword list.

Keyword research for affiliate marketing means finding the exact phrases people type into Google right before they spend money, then building content that ranks for those phrases.
