Known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.historicenvironment.scot\/2024\/04\/the-war-wolf-at-stirling-castle\/\">War Wolf<\/a>, the siege engine was the largest wooden trebuchet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/723197-largest-wooden-trebuchet\">ever built<\/a>, capable of launching projectiles that weighed more than 300 pounds. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/flowershistorye01parigoog\/page\/573\/mode\/1up?q=%22piece+of+cloth%22\">19th-century history<\/a>, the weapon smashed through the walls of\u00a0Scotland\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicenvironment.scot\/visit\/all\/stirling-castle\/\">Stirling Castle<\/a>\u00a0as easily \u201cas an arrow would fly through a piece of cloth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 700 years after Edward cowed the Scots into submission (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/brief-history-scottish-independence-180973928\/\">albeit temporarily<\/a>), archaeologists have uncovered a rare reminder of the damage inflicted by the king\u2019s siege engines.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradford.ac.uk\/staff\/jbuckberry\/#research\">Jo Buckberry<\/a>, a bioarchaeologist at the University of Bradford in England, <a href=\"https:\/\/cfp.dainst.org\/25th-european-ppa-meeting\/talk\/GHF9V8\/\">announced<\/a> at a recent meeting of the Paleopathology Association, a skeleton excavated at the Scottish castle bears more than 160 fractures sustained at or around the time of death, with most of the injuries concentrated on the skull and the ribs. But how do you get from there to a guy in medieval Scotland? What is large and moving very, very quickly in 1304?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer, Buckberry concluded after comparing the man\u2019s injuries to other documented cases, was probably a large stone that struck his right shoulder and the back of his head with great force, pinning him to the ground. \u201cThe scale of the fractures of his body suggest his death was thankfully instantaneous,\u201d the researcher says to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/sciencetech\/article-16049607\/Scottish-skeleton-confirmed-victim-trebuchet.html\"><em>Daily Mail<\/em><\/a>\u2019s William Hunter.<\/p>\n<div class=\"insight\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"h4-style\">Need to know: What is a trebuchet?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Radiocarbon dating of the skeleton\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-tayside-central-27443889\">one of nine<\/a> unearthed at Stirling Castle in 1997\u2014indicates that it dates to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/HistoryUK\/HistoryofScotland\/The-AngloScottish-Wars-or-Wars-of-Scottish-Independence\/\">Wars of Scottish Independence<\/a>, which spanned 1296 to 1357. Unlike most other medieval victims of wartime violence, the man\u2019s remains show no signs of injuries sustained in hand-to-hand combat.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, \u201cit\u2019s all these crushing injuries, sort of blunt force injuries,\u201d Buckberry told historian <a href=\"https:\/\/mattlewisauthor.com\/Default\">Matt Lewis<\/a> in a video shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HoGsd44VY34\">History Hit<\/a>. \u201cAnything with a large surface area \u2026 it\u2019s very difficult to say exactly what happened, but this is not a person who died in a battle on a battlefield, where we\u2019d expect to see sword injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Medieval Autopsy Reveals HORRIFIC Injuries<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/HoGsd44VY34\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"HoGsd44VY34\" alt=\"Medieval Autopsy Reveals HORRIFIC Injuries\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\" title=\"Medieval Autopsy Reveals HORRIFIC Injuries\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Buckberry has yet to publish her findings in a peer-reviewed journal, but <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=77UKsCIAAAAJ&amp;hl=de\">Lukas Waltenberger<\/a>, a forensic osteologist at Lithuania\u2019s Vilnius University who wasn\u2019t involved in the research, tells <em>Science <\/em>that he finds the evidence convincing. \u201cIt seems like a high-velocity, high-force, high-speed impact in a short amount of time,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the man, who died between the ages of 22 and 34, was a victim of War Wolf itself is unknown, but Buckberry finds it \u201cquite likely\u201d that he succumbed to a missile launched by one of Edward\u2019s trebuchets, whether it was the record-breaking weapon or an earlier model.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the siege, Stirling Castle was the last remaining stronghold of the Scottish independence movement. By 1304, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/william-wallace-braveheart-fame-defeated-english-battle-stirling-bridge-180985035\/\">William Wallace<\/a>, the freedom fighter immortalized in the 1995 film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0112573\/\"><em>Braveheart<\/em><\/a>, was on the run from the English; he would soon be captured and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalwallacemonument.com\/2023\/07\/wallaces-capture-and-execution\/\">executed<\/a>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.durham.ac.uk\/staff\/m-c-prestwich\/\">Michael Prestwich<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=lxMaCAAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA502#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">1997 biography<\/a> of the king, the trebuchet wasn\u2019t yet finished when the garrison yielded, but Edward, who \u201cwanted to see how effective the new machine was \u2026 refused to let anyone enter or leave the castle until it had been tried out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Was this final attack the one that killed the man studied by Buckberry? If so, he must have been exceptionally unlucky. \u201cSiege engines were deployed to destroy the walls of a castle and either force a surrender or allow the attacking army into the castle,\u201d the bioarchaeologist tells the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>. \u201cThey won\u2019t have had particularly precise aims, as the target was a castle, not a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edward\u2019s relentless military campaign ended Scotland\u2019s dreams of independence\u2014at least for a few years. In 1314, forces led by King <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/true-story-robert-bruce-scotlands-outlaw-king-180970756\/\">Robert the Bruce<\/a> dealt a devastating blow to the English at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Battle-of-Bannockburn\">Battle of Bannockburn<\/a>, paving the way for England\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottisharchivesforschools.org\/WarsOfIndependence\/Edinburgh-Northampton.asp\">official recognition<\/a> of Scottish sovereignty in 1328.
