His details were also included in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/jul\/15\/afghan-resettlement-scheme-secret-superinjunction-explainer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">accidental 2022 leak<\/a> by an MoD official that identified 18,700 Afghans who had worked with or for the British government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hamid said he had received a number of threats from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/taliban\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Taliban<\/a>, including a video he shared with the Guardian in which a man cradling a rifle and sitting below a Taliban flag threatens to pursue him and cites knowledge of his previous movements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"09b4bd5b-33db-43d6-a4f4-a5a9cbe3ba9f\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Taliban security personnel in Kandahar. His most recent rejection, received on 31 July, stated that Hamid had not provided evidence of \u201cworking alongside, in partnership with or closely supporting a UK government department\u201d. It gave him 28 days to appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hamid said: \u201cThis is extremely painful because I have already submitted every document available to me proving my service. Furthermore, many of my former colleagues who served in exactly the same department and performed the same duties have already been relocated to the UK through the Arap scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cDespite this evidence, my case continues to be refused. I believe my case raises serious questions about how some former Afghan partners of the UK continue to be treated despite years of loyal service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hamid\u2019s plea for help comes five years after the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/aug\/15\/the-fall-of-kabul-a-20-year-mission-collapses-in-a-single-day\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">15 August 2021<\/a> after the withdrawal of US and Nato forces. The UK government launched the Arap scheme on 1 April 2021 and closed it to new applications on 1 July last year. Since then, my life has changed completely. I cannot safely leave my home to work. I live in constant fear of being recognised or targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">After the leak, the then defence secretary, John Healey, said the dataset included people who had made speculative applications under Arap and had not worked with British forces. He said being included in the leak \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/jul\/16\/resettlement-afghans-data-leak-john-healey\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">doesn\u2019t give them a right to claim access to Britain<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt doesn\u2019t give them a right to claim asylum. It doesn\u2019t make them eligible for the special [Arap] scheme that Britain put in place for those who\u2019d worked alongside or served with our forces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Hamid said that because he was in hiding he had no reliable income and relied on his wife, who supports the family by doing small jobs from home. \u201cThis is our family\u2019s only source of income, and even then we struggle simply to survive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe emotional impact has been devastating. My wife and I have become deeply exhausted, depressed and hopeless after years of fear, uncertainty, repeated refusals and financial hardship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI am not asking for special treatment. I am only asking for a fair review based on the evidence I have already provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">An MoD spokesperson said: \u201cEach application is considered on a case-by-case basis, assessed against the evidence provided, such as how they supported the UK mission in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/afghanistan\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Afghanistan<\/a>, and in line with the publicly available eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cSince the Taliban takeover, the UK has resettled almost 39,000 Afghan men, women and children through Afghan resettlement schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man has received threats from the Taliban after his work for the Afghan police was revealed by a Ministry of Defence leak and the UK refused his application for resettlement.
