President Donald Trump<\/u><\/a>is turning u<\/a>p the anti-Muslim rhetoric, accusing Democratic voters Monday of electing \u201cjihadists\u201d in the 2026 primary elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have jihadists being elected al<\/a>l over the place,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office<\/u><\/a>.<\/u> \u201cWhether it\u2019s communism, jihadis<\/a>m \u2014 a friend of mine called up. He said, \u2018You know, really, we should use the word jihadist because that\u2019s what\u2019s happening.\u2019 If you take a look at what <\/a>happens in other countries, I think that\u2019s not going to be necessarily the way we want to live.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spiel went on. Without naming specific candidates, Trump claimed that \u201cthese are people that have been not successful. They\u2019re people that have been, in many cases, failures. They come from other failed countries, and they come here and they tell us how to run our country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks come as Muslim candidates gain ground within the Democratic Party<\/u><\/a>, including Abdul<\/u><\/a> El-Sayed, <\/u><\/a>an Egyptian-Ameri<\/a>can physician who won the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s comment didn\u2019t surprise Khaled A. Beydoun<\/u><\/a>, a professor of l<\/a>aw at Arizona State University and a scholar on Islamophobia and civil liberties.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump\u2019s comments … highlight one of the touchstones of<\/a> his presidency: using Islamophobia to not only curry favor, but divide the country and expose Muslims to violence,\u201d he told HuffPost.<\/p>\n

\u201cConflating an entire religion \u2015 Islam \u2015 with terrorism \u2015 jihadism <\/a>\u2015 is unabashed, unfiltered bigotry,\u201d said Beydoun, who\u2019s the author of \u201cAmerican Islamophobia: Understanding the Roots and Rise of Fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

El-Sayed, a progressive candidate and a Muslim, has increasingly become a target for Trump. Despite Trump\u2019s suggestion that \u201cthese people\u201d are foreign-born<\/u><\/a>, El-Sayed was born in Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Trump shared on Truth Social an<\/u><\/a> image of himself and first lady Melania Trump<\/u><\/a> in formal attire beside a photo of Abdul El-Sayed and his wife, who wears a hijab. \u201cTwo VERY DIFFERENT America\u2019s,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly used El-Sayed\u2019s full name in his public attacks, much as he frequently invokes former President Barack Obama\u2019s<\/u><\/a> middle name, Hussein \u2014 a tactic critics have described as a \u201cdog whistle\u201d for Islamophobia <\/u><\/a>and xenophobia.<\/p>\n

El-Sayed seems well-equipped<\/u><\/a> to handle<\/u><\/a> Trump\u2019s attacks: \u201cYes, we got two different visions of America. Donald Trump\u2019s vision is the one you are living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries?\u201d El-Sayed said in response to Trump\u2019s post during a CNN appearance this weekend.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n

The bigger issue, Beydoun said, is that anti-Muslim rhetoric from Republican politicians fuels prejudice and can embolden attacks on Muslim Americans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt enables the sort of anti-Muslim terror we saw in San Diego not long ago, when Islamophobic bigots attacked a mosque,\u201d he said, referring to a mass shooting in May in which two white supremacist teens attacked a mosque and a private school filled with Muslim children. Three adults were killed: a security guard, a teacher\u2019s husband and a mosque elder.<\/p>\n

Two months after the attack, the president faced intense backlash after sharing an anti-Muslim social media post showing Somali American kindergarteners wearing hijabs at a graduation ceremony. The children\u2019s faces were not blurred out.<\/p>\n

Islamophobia is on the rise throughout the country.: According to ISPU\u2019s 2025 American Muslim Poll, anti-Muslim sentiment rose among the general public in 2025, with the sharpest increases among white and Hispanic Americans.<\/p>\n

Experts say turning Abdul El-Sayed into a political boogeyman is politically strategic for MAGA.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

For MAGA politicians, painting elected Muslims as inherently aggressive towards the U.S. is a calculated move, said Jordan Esparza-Kelley, the communications coordinator at CAIR-Chicago,<\/u><\/a> a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is intentionally trying to trigger his audience by manufacturing an enemy that is both external and internal,\u201d Esparza-Kelley told HuffPost. \u201cHe seems to believe that a paranoid American people are more likely to be amenable to his autocratic tendencies.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president \u201calso benefits by distracting Americans from actual problems plaguing their day-to-day lives like paying more for their essential goods, losing access to healthcare, increased food insecurity due to the federal cuts to SNAP, and the housing crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ironically, Esparza-Kelley said, the Muslim elected officials Trump has attacked are among the few taking on those domestic issues and working to improve the quality of life for all Americans.<\/p>\n

In the midterms, Republican candidates in states like Texas<\/u><\/a>and T<\/u><\/a>ennessee<\/u><\/a>have incr<\/a>eased their targeting of Muslims in their campaign ads, noted Saher Selod<\/u><\/a>, the direct<\/a>or of research at ISPU, a non-partisan, non-profit research and education organization that studies issues that impact Muslims in the U.S.<\/p>\n

In the case of El-Sayed, Al Jazeera reported on an orchestrated campaign on X against the progressive candidate, whose election win is seen as a setback for pro-Israel lobbying groups such as AIPAC.<\/p>\n

The attacks began with accounts clipping the phrase \u201cinshallah,\u201d which means \u201cGod willing,\u201d from El-Sayed\u2019s election night speech. The phrase is a common expression of hope among Arabic speakers, but right-wing influencer Benny Johnson posted the clip without its context, presenting it instead as evidence of a sinister political and religious takeover of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cMuslim Socialist Candidate for Senate in Michigan Abdul El-Sayed says \u2018inshallah\u2019 during his speech on election night,\u201d Johnson captioned the clip, which has over 982,000 views.<\/p>\n

Now that El-Sayed has won<\/u><\/a> the Democratic primary for Michigan\u2019s U.S. Senate<\/u><\/a> seat, expect the anti-Muslim rhetoric to reach new levels. As Media Matters reported<\/u><\/a>, leading up to and following El-Sayed\u2019s primary victory, right-wing media have labeled the American-born physician a \u201cforeigner,\u201d a \u201cjihadist,\u201d and an \u201cIslamo-Marxist.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his victory, Rep. Nancy Mace<\/u><\/a> (R-S.C.) tweeted, \u201cEvery single Muslim holding public office in America is a Trojan horse, and a threat to both national security and our republic. We refuse to be silent.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Muslims run for office, political opponents frequently weaponize Islamophobic rhetoric.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Then there\u2019s Republican panic over Zohran Mamdani<\/u><\/a>, New York City\u2019s first Muslim mayor and a democratic socialist. When Mamdani ran for office last year, the level of Islamophobic attacks and accusations of him bringing sharia law to New York was unprecedented<\/u><\/a>, yet he won that election.<\/p>\n

El-Sayed \u201cis the national version of Mamdani,\u201d one national Republican operative working on battleground races told Politico under anonymity.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we are seeing with MAGA attacks on candidates like Abdul El-Sayed and Mamdani are hopes that the general public will buy into these Islamophobic tropes, that Muslims are violent, terrorists, misogynists, and that it will turn voters away from voting for them,\u201d Selod said.<\/p>\n

Islamophobia has intensified during these election cycles precisely because Muslims have stopped being objects of policy and become authors of it, said Hatem Bazian,<\/u><\/a> a senior lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, and the founder of the Islamophobia Studies Center.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor 25 years the terms of Muslim American public life were conditional: moderate yourself, denounce on cue, demonstrate loyalty, and you may be tolerated,\u201d he said. \u201cEl-Sayed and Mamdani won without accepting those terms. The reaction is to the breach of the condition, not to anything either man has done in office.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also a way to avoid actually engaging with their policies \u2014 many of which are popular with the American public.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth men ran on rent, healthcare and the cost of living,\u201d he said. \u201cCasting them as foreign spares their opponents from having to contest any of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beydoun finds it encouraging that so many Americans aren\u2019t taking the bait.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany Americans, especially young Americans, are fed up with the racism and Islamophobia that Trump became famous for in 2015,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not as effective as it once was, as illustrated by the electoral victories of Mamdani, El-Sayed and many more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
