{"id":7037999,"date":"2026-08-15T16:53:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-15T16:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/uncategorized\/lets-see-what-he-can-do-will-burnham-bring-voters-back-in-labour-heartlands-labour\/"},"modified":"2026-08-15T16:53:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-15T16:53:21","slug":"lets-see-what-he-can-do-will-burnham-bring-voters-back-in-labour-heartlands-labour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=7037999","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Let\u2019s see what he can do\u2019: will Burnham bring voters back in Labour heartlands? | Labour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\"><span style=\"color:var(--drop-cap);font-weight:500\" class=\"dcr-1iwzucl\">L<\/span>abour marked its worst performance in more than 50 years when voters went to the polls in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/barnsley\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Barnsley<\/a> in May, but 100 days on from those seismic local elections, the political landscape has shifted drastically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Could the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/south-yorkshire\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">South Yorkshire<\/a> town, where Reform UK reaped the benefits of dissatisfaction with Labour, prove to be a test case for whether the governing party has turned the tide?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour had run Barnsley\u2019s council since its inception in 1974, but was left with just 11 councillors after Reform triumphed with 42 seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI knew that it would be the most challenging set of elections that we\u2019ve ever faced in Barnsley\u2019s history,\u201d said the councillor James Higginbottom, the new Labour group opposition leader. \u201cWhat I didn\u2019t necessarily expect was the scale of the Reform victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"aba1af50-6a63-4ab0-b216-734f88ae5e16\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Barnsley\u2019s Labour council group leader, James Higginbottom. <\/span> Photograph: Gary Calton\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Catastrophic results in places such as Barnsley were a catalyst for Keir Starmer\u2019s resignation. He has been replaced as prime minister by the former mayor of Greater Manchester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/andyburnham\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Andy Burnham<\/a>, who won the Labour leadership uncontested after a landslide byelection victory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Meanwhile, the Reform leader, Nigel Farage, is facing scrutiny over his financial affairs. While he was decisively re-elected in Clacton on Thursday, after he called a byelection in protest over a parliamentary standards investigation into his financial gifts, the contest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/aug\/14\/clacton-byelection-result-nigel-farage-binface-parliamentary-inquiry-analysis\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">was largely viewed as a sideshow<\/a> after other major parties declined to stand. The parliamentary standards investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2026\/aug\/14\/standards-watchdog-investigation-nigel-farage-financial-gifts\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">has now resumed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour is now ahead in the polls for the first time since March 2025, with a YouGov poll on Monday giving Labour a two-point lead, at 24 points to Reform\u2019s 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Many in Barnsley used their vote in May to punish Starmer\u2019s government, and while almost everyone the Guardian spoke to there this week said it was too early to judge the Reform council on their record, the new national political picture appears to be enticing at least some back to Labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In the town of Penistone, Richard Riding, 71, a retired HGV driver, said he was normally a Labour voter but had backed Reform in May \u201cjust for a change\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe current government were in a total mess,\u201d he said, \u201cand we\u2019ve had a lot of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But he is no fan of Farage. \u201cIf you think the country\u2019s in a mess now with Europe, it\u2019s going to be totally destroyed if he takes over.\u201d he said. \u201c[Burnham] did a very good job in Manchester so let\u2019s see what he can do now,\u201d he added, saying he would vote Labour next time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"1a4e7623-7064-4833-8b2a-7b0420fc8805\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Richard Riding backed Reform in May but is no fan of Nigel Farage.<\/span> Photograph: Gary Calton\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour\u2019s Barnsley council was not your usual local administration. It had won both the Local Government Chronicle and the Municipal Journal (MJ) council of the year awards in 2023, becoming the first local authority to win both titles in the same year. In February, Barnsley was named in the top 10 most productive councils in the country, coming in seventh in the Impower Index, published by the MJ.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"1cada859-83c3-4c32-91a9-326f61c8049f\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Barnsley council under Labour brought in several initiatives, including hospital services in the town centre.<\/span> Photograph: Gary Calton\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">While in many towns people felt as dissatisfied with local administrations as they did with national government,<strong> <\/strong>Barnsley had launched a number of pioneering initiatives, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2026\/apr\/16\/nhs-outpatients-centre-barnsley-shopping-centre-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">including <\/a>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2026\/apr\/16\/nhs-outpatients-centre-barnsley-shopping-centre-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">health on the high street<\/a>\u201d, making it the first local authority to bring hospital services into the town centre, and free bus travel for under-18s, a version of which Burnham has since adopted nationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Barnsley parents also received free school uniforms for their children in a scheme that saved families about \u00a32.5m in a year. It has already been scaled back by Reform. (Reform\u2019s council leader and local party chair did not respond to interview requests.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Despite this innovative work, voters still punished Labour at the ballot box. \u201cBy and large, people were saying to us: \u2018I like what the council\u2019s doing\u2019,\u201d Higginbottom said, \u201cbut that national stuff, we just couldn\u2019t overcome that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"2506bd0f-7420-4b2a-9863-1dff2b90915d\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Martin Harvey said he voted Reform UK at the local elections as he is worried about immigration.<\/span> Photograph: Gary Calton\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Martin Harvey, 75, who worked in engineering, said he \u201chas been Labour all my life\u201d, but concerns about immigration meant he turned to Reform in May, and plans to stick with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI\u2019ve just been watching on TV, GB News, and I don\u2019t know, locally everything around here seems to be fine,\u201d he said, but added: \u201cPolitics in general, I\u2019m frightened, I am frightened of what\u2019s happening. It\u2019s just frightening how many boats are coming across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Jessica Morgan, 31, a retail worker, was always a Labour voter, but she voted Reform for the first time in May. \u201cI\u2019m still happy with that decision,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI just want the roads to be fixed, the potholes to be filled,\u201d she added. \u201cLabour were just cushty, because Barnsley has always been Labour. Even my grandad, he used to be a pit miner and he\u2019s always voted for Labour, but this time \u2026 no. He also voted Reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But there are early signs that some voters are thinking of returning to Labour. In the Penistone East ward of Barnsley, a council byelection has been triggered by the resignation of a Reform councillor. In May, Labour won two of the seats that were up for grabs, and Reform won the third. But a Labour source said they were \u201cconfident we will win\u201d the third seat on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Higginbottom said: \u201cI think that will be a good barometer as to where we are; are we reconnecting with voters who in May didn\u2019t feel able to put their trust in us?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"72b82d1b-c4f0-4c83-9731-a471c9e19f96\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-d9bay7\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-174mzkf\"><span class=\"dcr-vyhg7z\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1cipnsy\">Jessica Morgan would not change her vote for Reform UK in May.<\/span> Photograph: Gary Calton\/The Guardian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Labour has spoken to more than 1,000 voters in the ward so far and aims to double that by polling day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI\u2019m not saying they\u2019re rushing out to suddenly say: \u2018Yeah, we love Labour and we\u2019re going to be voting for you en masse\u2019,\u201d Higginbottom said, \u201c[but] some are willing to give us a fair hearing, and to listen to what we\u2019ve got to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Marie Tidball, the Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, said she had \u201cdefinitely\u201d noticed a shift in voter attitudes while campaigning for the byelection, in comparison to May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cIt really does feel like it\u2019s cut through in terms of Andy being boldly and confidently and authentically Labour once again, and I think people do seem to really identify with him as a person in a very powerful way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Keith Hibbert, 67, a retired project manager in engineering, voted Labour in May, as he \u201cwasn\u2019t convinced yet\u201d by Reform. His wife, Jill, a former nurse, also 67, switched to Farage\u2019s party based on \u201cjust the manifesto\u201d, having always voted Labour in the past. Both are cautiously optimistic about Burnham\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI think they\u2019ve given Labour a new leaf, because there\u2019s a new face, a new personality,\u201d Keith said. Jill added she would probably vote Labour again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dan Jarvis, the MP for Barnsley North, said: \u201cReform did well when people could only judge their promises. Unfortunately for them, their actions will now be judged too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Stephanie Peacock, the MP for Barnsley South, said: \u201cIt\u2019s still in early days, but I\u2019ve seen already that residents across Barnsley are more open and willing to give the Labour party a hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">She said one woman who had previously been \u201cpretty anti-government, and pro-Reform\u201d had told her she would vote Labour with Burnham as prime minister. \u201cIt\u2019s not just the PM\u2019s focus on tacking the cost of living,\u201d she said, \u201cit\u2019s the government\u2019s more hopeful and positive tone that is cutting through.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Labour marked its worst performance in more than 50 years when voters went to the polls in Barnsley in May, but 100 days on from those seismic local elections, the political landscape has shifted drastically.
