Of course, no shade on taking a few trips to the moon and back, but the Speedmaster began life as a racing-themed watch, and Omega has gone to great lengths to preserve that component of its identity over the generations. In the mid- to late 1990s, there was no bigger name in the sport of auto racing than Michael Schumacher, and that’s exactly who Omega identified as a key partner to expand the Speedmaster’s racing lore. This relationship resulted in a plethora of Speedmaster references, both directly and indirectly associated with Schumacher, released between 1996 to 2006, spanning the entirety of the German driver’s dominant stretch with Ferrari.

A Shared Racing History

If you’ve spent any time at all researching the history of the Speedmaster (you know, beyond the moon stuff), you’re likely to have come across a surprisingly vast collection of oddballs and outliers. This is a watch with some range, and Omega has never been shy about exploring its limits in the form of collaborations, limited editions (so many limited editions), and sub- collections within the family. In fact, there are probably at least a few Speedmasters out there that you’ve never seen (seriously, there are a lot of weird Speedmasters), and some of them might be within this range, created in partnership with Michael Schumacher.

Point being, Omega has never been afraid to let its hair down when it comes to the Speedmaster. When Omega formally signed Schumacher in 1996, he had just made the jump to Ferrari after winning consecutive World Driver’s Championships with Benetton in 1994 and 1995. Ferrari hadn’t won a driver’s championship since 1979, and it would have to wait until the year 2000 for a crack at another. This is where their bet (both Ferrari and Omega’s) paid off, as Schumacher would go on to win five consecutive championships between 2000 and 2004, setting all manner of records along the way. He would become a global phenomenon during this span, and the Swiss watchmaker was well positioned to capitalize on his success with the Omega Speedmaster Schumacher series.

The First Era (1996 – 1999)

Omega opened its relationship with Schumacher in 1996, and would release two references within the 39mm “Reduced” collection as an introduction. The references were the 3510.61 and the 3510.12, featuring vibrant red and yellow dials, respectively. Later, Omega would add a blue dial with the reference 3510.81. These are some of the most expressive “Speedmaster Reduced” references ever created, and these watches likely remain the most recognizable Schumacher-associated Speedmasters to this day.

Photo: Bonhams

It’s worth noting that these watches did not explicitly reference Schumacher, or even F1, in any way on the watch itself, not even on the caseback. With this success, Omega introduced a pair of new Schumacher Speedmaster references to honor the feat. This time, color is used in a more subtle manner to accentuate the unique chapter-ring design of these watches, with orange and red appearing in both dials. Additionally, the silver reference used a ghosted, checkered-flag design at the base of the dial.

Photo: Sotheby’s

These watches did get a direct reference to Schumacher, with special casebacks bearing his signature and the “world champion” title for 2000. They were the final Schumacher watches to use the reduced 39mm platform, and are the only ones that used a variation of the Valjoux 7750 movement, meaning the subdials are placed at 6, 9, and 12 o’clock.

Photo: Christie’s

The Reference 3519.50, which was limited to 11,111 pieces, used a bare aluminum bezel insert, and used the Caliber 1152, meaning it got a date at the 3 o’clock position.
