Choosing a seat on a plane can feel like a surprisingly important decision. After all, you could be sitting there for twelve hours or more, so getting it right can make a big difference to your comfort. I’m quite particular about where I sit. Over the years, I’ve had my fair share of aisle and window seats, and I’ve come to appreciate the pros and cons of both. My preference usually depends on the length and timing of the flight, as well as how much I want to sleep, move around or simply enjoy the journey. For me, there’s something special about sitting by the window. I love looking out at the landscapes below, watching the changing light and trying to identify places as we fly over them. But I also understand why so many frequent flyers swear by the aisle seat. So, which is better: the aisle or the window? Here’s my take:

When to choose and aisle or window seat

""""

Let’s explore the pros and cons of choosing an aisle or a window seat:

Aisle seat: pros

For many travellers, the aisle seat offers one thing above all else: freedom and flexibility.

Easy access

The biggest advantage of an aisle seat is simple: you have easy access to the aisle. Whether you want to stretch your legs, retrieve something from the overhead bin or simply walk around the cabin, you can do so whenever you like. This is particularly valuable on long-haul flights, where getting up every couple of hours helps improve circulation and reduces stiffness.

Easy access to the aisle

If you’re the type of person who likes to get up regularly, stretch your legs or walk around during a flight, this is undoubtedly the seat for you. You don’t have to ask anyone to move when you want to leave your seat. You simply get up and go.

Ideal if you use the lavatory often

If you need to use the lavatory several times during a flight, an aisle seat can save you a lot of awkwardness. There’s nothing worse than being in a window seat, finally settling down for a movie or getting comfortable for a nap, only to realise you need to get up. If the person beside you is asleep, you then have the delicate task of waking them and asking them to move.

With an aisle seat, you don’t have this problem. You can simply get up whenever you need to.

Handy when you have a tight connection

An aisle seat can also be useful when you have a short connection. Your choice of seat won’t necessarily get you off the aircraft quickly – the location of your seat, particularly how far forward you are, is more important – but being on the aisle means you can get ready to leave as soon as the aisle starts moving.

"pros"pros
An aisle seat is handy if you have to run for your connecting flight.

If I’m facing a tight connection, I’ll generally try to get a seat as far forward as possible, preferably on the aisle. Every minute can count when you have to navigate a large airport between flights.

You can stretch more easily

Another advantage is that it’s easier to stretch your legs. Many travel experts recommend standing up regularly during longer flights and doing some simple stretching exercises. From an aisle seat, it’s much easier to do this without feeling awkward or inconveniencing other passengers. You can quickly walk to the galley, stretch your legs or simply move around for a few minutes.

""""
More room for your legs and feet (image by H.Morse/Unsplash).

That said, there’s an important caveat: don’t stretch your legs too far into the aisle. It’s very easy for a passing passenger, or a drinks or meal trolley, to catch your foot.

Aisle seat: cons

The freedom of an aisle seat comes at a price: you’re right in the middle of the action.

Say goodbye to uninterrupted sleep

This is probably my biggest gripe with an aisle seat when I’m trying to sleep.

If the person sitting beside you wants to go to the lavatory, you’ll have to get up to let them out. And if they have a weak bladder or simply like to move around a lot, this can happen several times during a flight. There’s something particularly annoying about finally falling into a deep sleep, only to hear, “Excuse me…”.

If you’re a light sleeper, this can quickly become a reason to favour the window seat.

You’re exposed to the traffic

Because you’re sitting beside the aisle, you’re also exposed to constant movement. Passengers walking to and from the lavatories may accidentally bump into your shoulder, elbow or feet, especially if you tend to stretch your legs into the aisle.

Cabin crew pushing meal or drinks trolleys can also come surprisingly close, so you’ll often find yourself pulling your elbows, knees, or even your head back in.

More activity around you

The aisle can also be a surprisingly busy place. Depending on where you’re sitting, you may be close to a lavatory or galley where passengers congregate, chat or wait for their turn. For light sleepers, all this movement can become distracting. On one flight, I was assigned an aisle seat near the lavatories. I found it difficult to sleep, even with my headphones and eye shades on, as people were constantly bumping into my seat.

If you prefer to put on your headphones, close your eyes and retreat into your own little world, the window seat generally offers a more peaceful experience.

Window seat: pros

If you’re someone who enjoys flying itself rather than simply getting from A to B, the window seat has undeniable appeal.

Spectacular views

For me, one of the great pleasures of flying is the view. From a window seat, you can watch cities disappear beneath the clouds, follow coastlines, spot rivers winding through landscapes and see mountain ranges stretching towards the horizon.

"pros"pros

And then there are those magical moments: sunrise above the clouds, a sunset glowing across the sky or the lights of a city appearing as you begin your descent.

"advantages"advantages
Sunrise

This is one of the main reasons I almost always book a window seat. I love the views, and I enjoy trying to spot landmarks and taking photos. I even have a section on my blog dedicated to Plane Views! Whether it’s flying over the European Alps, approaching Amsterdam over the Dutch tulip fields or descending towards Mauritius surrounded by turquoise lagoons, the window offers a perspective you simply can’t experience in other seats.

""""

A great seat for sleeping

A window seat has another major advantage: you have something to lean against. Rather than trying to sleep upright while your head slowly drops onto your neighbour’s shoulder, you can lean against the aircraft wall. Add a good neck pillow (Amazon) and you have a much better chance of getting some good sleep. I particularly appreciate this on overnight flights.

""""
Getting comfortable with my neck pillow.

You’re not disturbed by your neighbours

There’s also something wonderfully convenient about being tucked into the window. You’re not disturbed if the passengers beside you need to get up. You can continue reading, watching a film or sleeping. Once you’re settled in, you can generally stay there undisturbed for hours.

On long flights, I often have my noise-cancelling headphones on while I watch the views and a movie or two. A window seat is my little corner of solitude – a place where I can relax, watch the world unfold below and simply savour this precious time for myself. For me, that’s one of the biggest attractions of a window seat.

Control over the window shade

Depending on the flight, you can also decide whether to keep the window shade open or closed, although it’s always courteous to consider your fellow passengers, especially if they’re trying to sleep.

"pros"pros
You have control over the window shade

Window seat: cons

Of course, the very thing that makes a window seat comfortable can also make it inconvenient.

You have to disturb your neighbours

The biggest downside is obvious: whenever you want to stretch your legs or visit the lavatory, you’ll need to ask one or even two people to let you out. This is the main reason some people avoid window seats altogether.

I try to minimise the disturbance by timing my trips to the lavatory with my neighbours. If I notice that one of them is getting up, I’ll usually take the opportunity to go too.

Stretching requires a little creativity

One of the other disadvantages is that you don’t have the same opportunity to get up and stretch your legs without disturbing someone.

I therefore make a point of doing stretching exercises in my seat. I’ll move and flex my feet, rotate my ankles, stretch my legs, and do simple exercises with my hands, wrists and arms. On a long flight, these small movements make a difference. You don’t need a big amount of space to keep your body moving.

You can feel more confined

Some people also find window seats a little claustrophobic, particularly on long flights. You’re essentially tucked into a corner, with one or two passengers between you and the aisle. Perhaps the worst seat on a plane is the window seat in the last row, especially if there’s a wall directly behind the seats. I’ve experienced how claustrophobic this seat is – on a ten-hour flight – and it was no fun at all.

"best"best

For travellers who value freedom of movement above everything else, the aisle is the obvious choice.

It can feel colder

Depending on the aircraft, the sidewall around the window and the exit doors can become noticeably colder during flight. In addition, on many aircraft types, hidden air vents run along the ceiling and sidewalls to facilitate air circulation in the cabin. Bringing an extra layer, or asking the flight attendant for an additional blanket, can make sleeping against the window much more comfortable.

Aisle or window: which should you choose?

There’s no universal winner – it all comes down to your priorities and preferences.

Choose an aisle seat if you:

  • Like getting up regularly during the flight

  • Use the lavatory frequently

  • Want easy access to the aisle

  • Have a tight connection after landing

  • Prefer not to disturb other passengers.

Choose a window seat if you:

    • Love watching the scenery below

    • Plan to sleep during the flight

    • Don’t mind remaining seated for longer periods

    • Rarely need the lavatory

    • Prefer fewer interruptions during the journey.

Personally, I’ll usually choose the window. I love the views, I enjoy the personal space and I like having something to lean against when I sleep. However, I’ll happily consider an aisle seat when the circumstances call for it – especially on a very long flight when I know I’ll want to get up regularly, or when I have a tight connection.

At the end of the day, neither option is objectively better. The perfect seat is simply the one that best matches your own travel habits. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of each can make your next flight that little bit more comfortable – and that’s always worth planning for before you board.
