So this week I\u2019ll AmericanStudy that<br \/>\nmoment and a handful of contexts.]<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">On three earlier space program disasters that in distinct ways<br \/>\nechoed into the <i>Challenger<\/i>\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">1)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/apollo-1\/\">Apollo 1<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> (1967): 59<br \/>\nyears ago tomorrow, <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2017\/01\/january-27-2017-nasastudying-apollo-i.html\">on<br \/>\nJanuary 27<sup>th<\/sup>, 1967<\/a>, a fire swept through the command module of<br \/>\nthe first manned Apollo mission while the ship was on the launchpad for a<br \/>\npreflight test, killing <a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/explore\/stories\/apollo-missions\/apollo-1\">all<br \/>\nthree astronauts<\/a> on board (Virgil \u201cGus\u201d Grissom, Edward White, and Roger<br \/>\nChaffee). Obviously a launchpad disaster that takes the life of an entire<br \/>\nmission\u2019s crew is eerily similar to what would happen with the <i>Challenger<\/i><br \/>\na couple decades later, but there\u2019s at least one significant difference: this<br \/>\nwas to be the first manned Apollo mission, and so it stands to reason that<br \/>\nmistakes and failures were possible, and indeed likely inevitable when it came<br \/>\nto things like the first launch (although of course this was a hugely<br \/>\ndestructive and tragic failure); while the Space Shuttle program had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/history\/SP-4219\/Chapter12.html\">begun in 1981<\/a><br \/>\nand seen the first successful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/sts-4\/\">orbital<br \/>\nflight in 1982<\/a>, making the <i>Challenger<\/i>\u2019s launch part of what would<br \/>\nseem to have been by that time a well-established and safe routine before<br \/>\ntragedy struck. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">2)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/apollo-13\/\">Apollo 13<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> (1970): I<br \/>\ndon\u2019t imagine I need to say too much about the story of this subsequent, successfully<br \/>\nlaunched but hugely troubled Apollo mission, given the prominence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IROHmHj3Wso\">the 1995 film<\/a> which depicts<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YwG4F-16Tno\">the mission\u2019s events<\/a>.<br \/>\nAs that film captures, the <i>Apollo 13<\/i> astronauts were able to work with<br \/>\nthe NASA folks on the ground to get their ship and themselves back to Earth<br \/>\nsafely, one of the most impressive scientific feats in American history and a clear<br \/>\ncontrast to the <i>Challenger <\/i>tragedy. But the latter mission\u2019s tragically<br \/>\ndifferent endpoint shouldn\u2019t obscure something we can learn from the <i>Apollo<br \/>\n13 <\/i>mission: the remarkable level of skill, ingenuity, teamwork, and courage<br \/>\ndisplayed by NASA astronauts and ground crew alike. That was just as true of<br \/>\nevery member of the <i>Challenger <\/i>mission (including the unique one about<br \/>\nwhom I\u2019ll write tomorrow), even if they sadly did not have a chance to<br \/>\ndemonstrate it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><span style=\"mso-list: Ignore;\">3)<span style=\"font: 7.0pt &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><!--[endif]--><i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/history\/50-years-ago-remembering-the-crew-of-soyuz-11\/\">Soyuz<br \/>\n11<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\"> (1971): As I highlighted in <a href=\"https:\/\/americanstudier.blogspot.com\/2017\/01\/january-25-2017-nasastudying-kennedys.html\">this<br \/>\npost<\/a> on Kennedy\u2019s \u201cmoon shot\u201d speech, the Cold War rivalry between the U.S.<br \/>\nand the Soviet Union played a huge role in the development of the U.S. space<br \/>\nprogram, which means that (at least in my experience) we tend not to think much<br \/>\nat all about Soviet space missions, and certainly not about them as parallel to<br \/>\nU.S. ones. But if we take a step back, of course they were parallel; and moreover,<br \/>\nas these are the two nations that (to this day) have had the most success putting<br \/>\nhumans in space, there\u2019s a lot we can and should learn from comparing and<br \/>\ncontrasting their experiences doing so. Especially their most tragic<br \/>\nexperiences\u2014and if <i>Challenger<\/i> is ours, I\u2019d say the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/people-who-died-in-space-astronauts-cosmonauts-2022-12\">all<br \/>\nthree <i>Soyuz 11<\/i> astronauts<\/a> aboard the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/station\/50-years-ago-launch-of-salyut-the-worlds-first-space-station\/\">Soviet<br \/>\nspace station <i>Salyut 1<\/i><\/a> has to be theirs. And while all the lessons<br \/>\nwe might take from the latter are above the paygrade of this last moment in a<br \/>\nbrief blog post, I\u2019ll just add this: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/soyuz-memorial\">mourning and memorializing<\/a><br \/>\nthose three Soviet astronauts should be just as much of a no-brainer, for Americans<br \/>\nand all people, as doing so for the <i>Challenger<\/i>\u2019s. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Next ChallengerStudying tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">Ben<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">PS.
