Andy Burnham<\/a>‘s\u00a0desire to reindustrialise the nation \u2013 of which the automotive industry is a key part.<\/p>\nCars are the UK\u2019s most valuable goods export, totalling \u00a347.7 billion in the year ended April 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cBritain invented the modern motor industry and we\u2019re determined to ensure the next generation of vehicles are designed and built here too,\u201d said industry minister Blair McDougall.<\/p>\n
Ian Constance, chief executive of the Advanced Propulsion Centre \u2013 a non-profit organisation that bridges the industry, academia and government \u2013 said the funding \u201cis about strengthening the UK\u2019s capability to design, develop and build the technologies that will define the vehicles of the future\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\nManufacturing<\/h2>\n
Some \u00a38m in funding has been given to two consortiums bringing together the industry and academia, with a view to bringing new products and processes to market.<\/p>\n
Bentley, together with EV battery start-up Ionetic, is working to localise the production of cells and packs for future cars.<\/p>\n
Wire harness manufacturer Q5D Technologies leads the other group, which also comprises Artifex Interior Systems, JLR\u00a0and the University of Warwick.<\/p>\n
Its project, named AutoLoom, looks to industrialise a Q5D technology that replaces manual assembly of vehicle wiring looms with a fully automated process using computer-aided design.<\/p>\n
Connected and autonomous vehicles<\/h2>\n
Nine projects in the UK\u2019s connected and automated mobility (CAM) industry have been awarded an undisclosed sum.<\/p>\n
These include Nissan and the University of Warwick\u2019s Warwick Manufacturing Group, whose ADventure\u00a0project aims to create an autonomous mobility service for cities.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, brake manufacturer Alcon, together with the University of Surrey and autonomous vehicle technology firm EVIE, is working on a brake-by-wire system with anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control\u00a0for use in level-four\u00a0autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n
Level four autonomy takes full control away from the driver, albeit within geofenced locations \u2013 such as for local driverless taxis.<\/p>\n
Highway services firm Ringway, autonomous vehicle firm Fusion Processing and gritter manufacturer Econ Engineering will develop and trial autonomous impact protection vehicles and road gritters.<\/p>\n
Other CAM projects being funded include the development of autonomous airport vehicles, which will be trialled at Teesside airport, as well as others in artificial intelligence and radar technologies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
